Commissioner Corner Message Board
I'm in a keeper league which allows us to keep any 5 players plus 3 others that have less than 3 years experience.
I've been proposed a trade of Bobby Ryan and a 13th round pick for my best performer, Scott Hartnell, and a 22nd rounder. Ryan is great but is having a downer season whereas Hartnell is an insane fantasy catch right now being on pace for 80 pts and well over 100 pim. This guy is leading our league and I am 8 points out of a playoff spot with only a couple weeks left before playoffs start.
I don't know if I should accept and hope that Ryan picks it back up next year and have another early pick in next years draft or hold on to Hartnell as he could be what gets me into the playoffs this year and keep him for next year as well.
To be honest (and this from a Flyer fan who goes to a ton of games), Hartnell hasn't really changed his play all that much. He's always been a grind it out type of player who likes to pick in front of the net and mop up dirty goals. The reason he is having such a breakout year is that he is benefiting immensely by Lavs paring him up with Jagr & Giroux.
There are a lot of trade rumors floating around that the Flyers would deal JVR & Carle and maybe a pick or two for Rick Nash - if that's the case, I'd imagine there would be some line shakeups and it's hard to say exactly where Hartnell would fall into that mix.
To be fair, he is having a hell of a year so I'm not trying to take anything away from him, but if I had to choose one or the other I'd say he's still more of a sell high kind of guy rather than a legitimate stud for years to come.

I would not trade Hartnell for Ryan. Hartnell is having a awesome year and he is in my league's free agency and I want to sign him. So keep Hartnell but if I misread your question. And you were getting Scott Hartnell I would do that deal any day of the week. The only problem is James Van Riemsdyk and some other linemates of Hartnell's are probably getting traded to the Maple Leafs. So that might effect Hartnell's chemistry with his present linemates but he will still be better then Bobby Ryan. Ryan is playing for a bad team (Anaheim that are underachievers) Hartnell plays for a team that makes the playoffs every year.
