how come Vanek isnt on IR?

Sun, Feb 8 LW Thomas Vanek suffered a broken jaw when he took a shot to the face off the stick of Ottawa defenseman Anton Volchenkov. He underwent surgery Sunday and will be out until March.

  He won't go on the IR with Buffalo. They are allowed to carry 23 players, and only 18...

  They are allowed to carry 23 players, and only 18 dress for games. So he will just be one of the 5 they sit out each night, no need for him to go on the IR.
  
  It's a broken jaw, so he may be back sooner than the 3-4 weeks.
  He'll just put on a full mask, or one of those masks that just covers the jaw.
  
  It doesn't affect his skating

  This is the official team website that lists double asterisk next to his name. They did place him on IR and Yahoo will too but I'm not sure when...
