Draft and Trade Talk Message Board
Hey there, I'm making a list of sleepers and busts and was asking for advice wondering if you agree or disagree or have any players to add. Sleepers to me are guys who have more value than where they're being drafted and busts are guys who have less value than where they're drafted.
Joffrey Lupul, Wayne Simmonds, Jason Garrison, Niklas Kronwall, Cody Franson, Cory Schneider, Jonathan Bernier, Jeff Carter, Ryan Callahan, Mike Green, Mikhail Grabovski, Brandon Dubinsky, Jarome Iginla, Brandon Saad, Beau Bennett, Jake Gardiner
Brad Marchand, Lee Stempniak, Bryan Bickell, David Perron, Marc-Andre Fleury, Sergei Bobrovsky, Jimmy Howard, Antti Niemi, Danny Briere, Travis Zajac, Vinny Lecavalier, Patrick Marleau, Martin Brodeur, Bryan Little, Jaroslav Halak, Torey Krug
Also...I made some interesting observations when it comes to David Clarkson and Brent Burns. I noticed that I value them MUCH higher than where they are currently projected by Yahoo and am asking where you think I should draft them. I noticed Clarkson is projected to be taken 291st in the draft and Burns is 167th. Clarkson contributes in every category and can score 20-30 goals while racking up close to 100 PIM while we all saw how well Burns played while on the wing....which rounds or position would you draft these two?
Nice lists. Lupul, Kronwall, and Callahan are three I've noticed tend to be really underranked.
A couple sleepers I might add:
Bergeron, Couture, Backes, Brown
On the busts side I usually think the Sedins tend to go too high, and that St. Louis is ranked too high this year given his age and lack of production in secondary stats.
If you have fairly knowledgeable people in your draft, Burns and Clarkson will probably get grabbed before their predicted time. I know both of them got quite a bit of fantasy attention last year. I'd grab Burns in the 110th-130th pick range, and Clarkson somewhere around the 200th pick.

I don't think the goalies are that overvalued, just because there aren't very many good options this year, as there are a lot of teams with foggy situations in net. I'd say Fleury is scary, just because you don't know what you're going to get, and he has a more than able backup. Similar with Halak, he's less scary, but again, solid #2 option behind him. As for Howard and Niemi, I think they're about right, both are very solid, very consistent, and play on good teams. There's not a lot of guys you can say that about this year, and you have to have goalies on your team, so they need to be taken high.
Burns, I'm not so sure how much of a sleeper he is, just because EVERYONE knows about him, and the fact that he's playing forward yet has D eligibility, and succeeded last year in that role. He's a sleeper based on Yahoo's rankings, but not really based on where I think he'll draft at. Burns is averaging draft position 122.2 and I'd go higher if I needed D.
Clarkson is similar AND he's a Maple Leaf, and if there is a Toronto fan in your pool (I'm willing to bet there is) he'll go way higher than Yahoo says he will.
I agree Burns is a big-time sleeper so I like the range you mentioned. As for Clarkson, I feel he has much more value than the 200th pick and given that we are all leafs fans in my league for the most part, I feel like Clarkson might go sooner. I was thinking maybe the 140-180th pick range (unless I am overrating him in your eyes) just because he can contribute all across the board in categories.
I agree that St. Louis might be a bust considering his age as you mentioned but I can't say the Sedins are. They are projected as late 1st-early 2nd rounders which is fine for me I think, it's good value for them.
Sleepers that I don't agree on: Lupul (Great point getter but gets injured WAY too much therefore hes ranked properly) , Simmonds is solid but probably shouldn't be drafted much earlier.
Busts that I don't agree with: Marchand is actually more of a sleeper if anything, boston has a solid top 6 and he'll be playing with eriksson expect him to get 60 points. Niemi is one of the more consistent goalies and with SJ expected to do better this year expect him to have a good year (hes top 4 goalie for me).
The rest look good but here are some to add.
Sleepers: Ryan O'reilly (expect 60 points got moved to wing on top line), Bouchard (50 playing on top line could get injured though), Hartnell (extremely low on the rankings but is on the top line with giroux expect him to bounce back. Derek Stepan as well i have him in the top 30-40. I have tons of others such as Couture/Voracek/ Drouin/Pacioretty/OEL/Voynov/Burns/Kadri/M.Koivu/Schenn/Brassard/Tlusty/Stastny

Thanks for your opinion. I do agree Burns is a definite sleeper. I was wondering, where would you take Brent Burns or David Clarkson in the draft? I feel they provide much more value than where they are ranked by Yahoo
