I hate drafting first, but I like this team! What's your philosophy?

12-team, experienced head-to-head league. I've never been a fan of drafting with the first overall pick because so many players are taken in between your selections--this is especially noticeable in the first 3-4 rounds.

I know the first comments on this team will be about defencemen, so let me address that up front: I think taking D early is a waste of a good pick. A 50-point defenceman in one of the first five rounds, when 30-goal/70-point forwards are still available, is not much more valuable than a 40-point defenceman, which I can snatch up in a much later round, when only 50-point forwards may be available. I know this is a controversial philosophy--what's your take on it?
