Auto-draft gone awry, now what do I do?

My 4th and final league just completed it's auto-pick draft. I spent countless hours setting up my pre-draft rankings, doing mock drafts, and always got teams that went to plan. Then the league drafts and I get this (drafting 2nd of 10):

    C Crosby
    C Datsyuk
    C Connolly
    LW Ryan
    LW Hall
    LW Latendresse
    RW Bourque
    RW Downie
    RW Samuelsson
    D Lidstrom
    D Weber
    D Chara
    D Myers
    D Rafalski
    D Visnovski
    UTIL Fleischmann
    G Howard
    BN Niemi
    BN Krejci
    BN Hudler
    BN Hejduk

In every mock draft I did I got at most 2 top D-men, and here I somehow drafted D-men in rounds 5 thru 10 and my wingers are pretty much awful. I had the early part of my rankings loaded w/ elite wingers and got none.

So, what do I do trade-wise to try to salvage something? I won this thing last year and am pretty much freaking out right now.

    • I don't understand why people do autodraft...

      But best of luck man.

    • I've tested the remaining trade market, and unless I'm willing to trade Weber for Filppula or Crosby for Holmstrom (and yes, those were both actually offered to me) it looks like my opening day roster is going to be:

      C Sidney Crosby
      C Pavel Datsyuk
      C Ryan Kesler
      LW Bobby Ryan
      LW Taylor Hall
      LW Tomas Fleischmann
      RW Phil Kessel
      RW Rene Bourque
      RW Jiri Hudler
      D Nicklas Lidstrom
      D Shea Weber
      D Tyler Myers
      D Lubomir Visnovski
      D Sheldon Souray
      D John Carlson
      UTIL Tim Connolly (C)
      G Jimmy Howard
      BN Antti Niemi (G)
      BN David Krejci (C)
      BN Guillaume Latendresse (LW)
      BN Steve Downie (RW)

H2H league with stats standard plus Points, Short-handed points, and Face-offs for skaters and Losses for goalies.

I really like it now, I only had to lose Rafalski, Chara, Samuelsson, and Hejduk and added Kessel, Kesler, Souray, and Carlson. I still have a very strong defense, my centers are sick, and adding Kessel to my wingers really helps. Teams a bit on the young side (would be an awesome keeper team), but pretty well balanced with scoring and PIMs.

Goaltending could be a bit of a concern if a sophomore slump is in the cards. but they play for 2 of the top teams in the league, so I don't see too much of a problem.

      • Looks like I was wrong, made 1 more trade which I think is pretty big for me:

        I gave:
        Tyler Myers
        Taylor Hall

        I got
        Michael Cammalleri
        Ian White

This is a non-keeper league, so I like how this turned out.

I also dropped Krejci and picked up Steve Mason from FA. Don't plan on carrying 3 G's all year, but I think Mason may bounce back, and he's worth a look.

        Team is now:

        C Sidney Crosby
        C Pavel Datsyuk
        C Ryan Kesler
        LW Bobby Ryan
        LW Michael Cammalleri
        LW Tomas Fleischmann
        RW Phil Kessel
        RW Rene Bourque
        RW Jiri Hudler
        D Nicklas Lidstrom
        D Shea Weber
        D Lubomir Visnovski
        D Sheldon Souray
        D Ian White
        D John Carlson
        UTIL Tim Connolly (C)
        G Jimmy Howard
        BN Antti Niemi (G)
        BN Steve Mason (G)
        BN Guillaume Latendresse (LW)
        BN Steve Downie (RW)

    • Auto-draft eh? lol!!!!

    • Got someone to bite on a trade that helps my winger situation, and depending on if my gamble pays off, I didn't really lose anything defensively either.

      I gave:

      Rafalski/Samuelsson

      I got:

      Kessel/Souray

Souray was the guys 2nd best D-man, and being it's possible that he won't play this year if Edmonton can't trade him, I figured it was worth a shot. If Souray gets traded to Columbus and becomes their PP quarterback, this was an absolute steal for me. Even if he doesn't play, I still got a sniper winger and I can pick up a D-men from FA while having my other 5 stud D-men.

      • This is shaping up nicely now, another trade just accepted:

        I gave Chara

        I got Kesler.

        Now my team is:

        C Sidney Crosby
        C Pavel Datsyuk
        C Ryan Kesler
        LW Bobby Ryan
        LW Taylor Hall
        LW Tomas Fleischmann
        RW Phil Kessel
        RW Rene Bourque
        RW Jiri Hudler
        D Nicklas Lidstrom
        D Shea Weber
        D Tyler Myers
        D Lubomir Visnovski
        D Sheldon Souray
        D -empty-
        UTIL Tim Connolly (C)
        G Jimmy Howard
        BN Antti Niemi (G)
        BN David Krejci (C)
        BN Milan Hejduk (RW)
        BN Guillaume Latendresse (LW)
        BN Steve Downie (RW)

I'd like to fill that D slot, so my question is who do I drop and who do I grab. Notable FA D-men are:

        Stralman
        Byfuglien
        Martin (waivers)
        McBain (waivers)
        Carlson (really interested in him)
        Gilbert

I'm thinking Carlson, but not sure who to drop. It's have to be a RW or Krejci obviously, but I like to carry 5 C's in this league for Face-Off purposes. Thoughts?

    • Here's the 3 trades I've proposed so far, thoughts and the odds they'll be accepted? Obviously I'm only looking for 1 to go thru.

      Chara for Kesler

      Visnovski for M. Koivu

      Hall/Rafalski for Vanek/Ryan Whitney

I know it seems wierd I'm looking for another C in 2 of them when that's one of my strong suits, but I like to fill my UTIL spot w/ C's because face-offs are a stat, and I'm still not sold on Krejci.

    • Your LW is kind of weak after Ryan, but RW is a good combo of points and PIM (assuming your league counts them). I'd see if anyone decided to fall in love with Hall, throw him in with your least favourite d-man, and try to get back a player along the lines of Heatley or Vanek.

The only reason to have Hall is if it's a keeper league, but a lot of people see 1st round pick and think the kid is going to blow it up right away (I think expecting more than 50 points would be pretty friggin generous, especially considering the team he's on), so you could get a quality guy in return.

    • I just created a new league. The league is called Canada Rules and the password is vancouver. Its 20 teams 4 divisions, no max on moves bench is 1 player smaller but increased roster by 1 (utility). 8 scoring categories and 5 goalie categories. I am honest and can count on no rules changing mid season unless 70% of the league agrees. If you would like an invite e-mail me at npascale333@yahoo.com and dont worry if you already have 4 teams. all are welcome....i.d # 49301

    • call me crazy but i like your team, your wingers are young but should do well. you have crazy centres and sick d-men with some wood to use on the waiver wire for anybody who goes on a streak.

      • Yeah, after the initial shock of all the D-men, I'm not quite as worried today. I compared this teams average stats to last years championship team and point-wise it's not that far behind, and with the likes of Downie, Bourque, and Chara, it kills last years team in terms of PIMs. Hopefully the likes of Datsyuk/Lidstrom/Rafalski can get closer to their 2008-2009 stats than their 2009-2010 stats and I'll be alright.

I just proposed a guy with a ton of Centers and weak on D, Chara for Kesler. I'm weakest at wing, but this league (H2H) has face-offs as a stat so I'd like another real good Center. Not sure he'll bite, but worth a shot.

    • Anyone have ideas? Looking at it more in-depth it's not as bad as I first thought, but what kind of player should I be able to trade at least 1 of these D-men for?
