Nascar suspends Chad Knaus 6 races, for illegal modifications to the 48 car. They determined that the 48 car violated several regulations prohibiting modifications to the car. In this case, the problem was the "C posts," the columns that come down from the roof of the car to the rear quarter panel. NASCAR officials determined from a visual inspection that the C-posts were too far out of tolerances, which could have led to an aerodynamic advantage.
The penalty also includes a 25-point fine, which, combined with Johnson's two-point total at Daytona, means Johnson is now at -23 points for the season and already almost two full races behind points leader Matt Kenseth.-

The comment below was taken from another post. I personally doubt the consequences woulnd't have been this severe if it weren't for the "crack" the back of the car against the wall if we win" last year at Talladega. The way I understand it, the C-Posts met key template points of measure, the entire template wasn't met due to a gray area left to work in. There is always a gray area and since it was determined by NASCAR that it went past what they would allow, the 48 had to comply with what they were told. If you don't test the boundaries of your territory, you aren't trying hard enough to win in my opinion. This was a "pre-race" inspection. I think NASCAR is playing payback for something they couldn't prove last year.

I know a majority of the time they are not cheating, they just found an edge that there isn't a rule for yet. Here are a couple examples; the length of the fuel hose, the tank size was specific but the rules never said how much hose could be used to get the fuel to the pump. After a couple races were won because they had enough fuel to make it without pitting and others didn't NASCAR made a rule of how long the fuel line could be. another one was the number of stages you could run on your oil pump, the more crankcase vaccuumm you pull the more horsepower you can make, the oil pumps in the 80's used to extend past the back of the engine block. another was the volume of the valve covers and oil pan, similar effect as the extra stages in the oil pump. All of these were legal gray areas that gave the drivers the edge and caused NASCAR to create a rule against it.
I doubt that JJ has any clue what the aerodynamic engineers are tweaking on his car. This is one of the biggest areas left with gray area simply because of how difficult it is to word in the rules.
I actually like some of the creativity some teams take to get the edge, one of my favorite examples was when they were welding washers on to hold up the suspensions to pass inspection knowing that they would break off on the first couple laps at daytona. Once the weld would break and the washers were gone the rear of the car would drop out of the wind greatly reducing the drag, one of the reasons there is an after race inspection as well.- View Replies

I like jimmy & chad, im not a huge 48 fan, but if theres no template for these bars, it seems to be "nitpickin" on NASCARs part, thinking outside the box when its not pourposely cheating, shouldnt be punished so severly,,, its not like they altered the valve stems for the tires to bleed off excess pressure,, that was kinda thinking outside the box too though.

I think just after lap 1 the whole car was altered. Could this be a fault of the accident? I just found out and haven't read up. Just wondering if they will use that approach? If he did it, (like there is an if with cheating chad) He has to be pissed he didn't find out if it worked or not. LoL.

He is some food for thought. Could this cause Jimmie to miss the chase. -70 points 49th in points after 1 race. He is 23 points behind Bill Elliott, jj yeley, and anyone else who didn't even run in Daytona. LoL. Just for Jimmie to get in this chase he is going to have to have a championship year. I bet Kurt is wishing he was in Hendricks powered cars now. this is a dream come true for him. A bump here a bump there Jimmie out of the chase. He has to be in the top 20 for wins to get him in. A few bad races early could spell trouble. He has survived with out chad before but can lightning strike twice or has the good karma gone bad.............

NASCAR found them before 1st practice, impounded the car and made them replace them before they got the car back.

If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'.
I don't believe this was something that the team was trying to sneak past NASCAR, if you see the pictures, the difference was obvious. I think they just thought they found something that NASCAR would ok, but they were wrong and now they suffer the consequences. -
