Commissioner Corner Message Board
I'm starting a new dynasty league and want competitive scoring.
Obviously we will have R RBI HR AVG SB
What's better? OBS or OBP?
Should we do XBH or TB?
Pitching will be W SV HLD ERA K WHIP QS
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
My money league is 7x7 H2H. Our categories are R, H, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, OPS. For pitching, W, CG, SVs, Ks, ERA, WHIP, K/9, with a 40 innings minimum. K/9 is a great category in H2H leagues as it prevents overuse of streaming pitchers. If you stream alot of bum pitchers, sure you might win Ws and Ks and CGs, but you're almost always losing ERA, WHIP, and K/9.
I use the following:
Hitters: HR, 2b, 3b, Runs, RBIs, SB, Avg, OPS
Pitchers: Win%, Save%, K/IP, CG, QS, ERA, WHIP, S
We decided to use a lot of percentages for the pitchers because it stops people from streaming pitchers for stats on a weekly basis. We also have a 45 min innings pitched. We also added value to the closer position by having two save categories and value to speed guys by adding triples into the mix.
Our 5x5 transformed over the years to 8x8 and it's been perfect for us. The categories we use are:
-- Batting categories: R, H, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, OBP
-- Pitching categories: W, QS, Hld, SV, K, ERA, WHIP
OBP, H, R, RBI, HR, SB, XBH
W, QS, ERA, WHIP, Sv, HLD, K/BB
Now that said, it's unbalanced. Closers aren't worth any more than set up men. In some sense they're worth less because if a closer loses his job he gets stuffed in low-leverage situations or the phantom DL stint or whatever. And the holds guy gets the next shot for saves. So the in-the-know crowd never draft closers. Quite honestly I think we should dump HLD, but I always get outvoted.
On the offensive side, well, it's exceptionally power-heavy with a home run contributing to six categories. If you don't hit HR, that week you cannot compete. XBH should probably get dumped for something, but I don't think Yahoo offers (2B +3B) and again in my league 2B and 3B are unpopular as individual categories.
We don't use defensive categories because we've never found one we could use. Errors for instance, are garbage because guys who can't get to balls don't make errors. Outfield assists are nonsense (a little like picks in football) because once you get a reputation as an outfielder with an arm, your opportunities for assists diminish greatly (like the shut down corner who doesn't get thrown at).
We should probably dump HLD and XBH and go 6x6, but our league will never change.
