Commissioner Corner Message Board

Snake, I'm sure you're familiar with the old adage that says...'you can't legislate morality'. Well, in many cases you legislate fair play, good sportsmanship, ethical play...and any other description that fits this type of situation. Like Connor, i too applaud managers wanting to get into the playoffs and trying... what i don't applaud, is using loopholes and technicalities in order to win. There's notihing wrong with the rule...but it simply won't work as long as you have unscrupulous owners that are willing to win at any cost. There's clearly a difference in getting advice from a forum...and purposely manipulating the decisions of owners for the pure purpose of giving yourself an unfair advanrtage. As long as their are owners out there who share the perspective expressed by Connor...there will be those who use great imagination in coming up with ways to win this game by means other than skill. There's no way you can control this by a rule...no matter how right the rule is and no matter how good your intentions are. The only solution is to find people that want to beat your #$%$ every week...by being more skilled at selecting and acquiring players that score more than your players. Thankfully, I've been the commissioner in such a league for the past seven years. there are people out there for whom ethics means something. you just have to find them.
Jon, I agree he should find people to play that are not middle schoolers. However, I don't see this as being against fair play. I'm in a very competitive leauge with two divisions, and each regular season division champs win 100 dollars. Right now I'm in the lead by a game and my buddy who is a game out gave some "friendly advice" to my opponent to pick up New England DEF since he already starts the Bears. My opponent chose not to do it, which I'm sure he hates, but if he had does that make it cheating? I don't think so. People are doing something to put their team in a better position. I could understand if they were using the board to beg for teams out of the playoff hunt to dump players, but my buddy in second is trying to make money, while the guy I'm playing this week is trying to make the playoffs.

Let’s begin by setting the record straight: I said nothing about finding “middle schoolers” to play. What I DID say was :
Like Connor, i too applaud managers wanting to get into the playoffs and trying...”, and…I said,
“The only solution is to find people that want to beat your #$%$ every week...by being more skilled at selecting and acquiring players that score more than your players”
So, please don’t mischaracterize what I said…for the sake of being sarcastic.
You said: “I'm in a very competitive leauge with two divisions, and each regular season division champs win 100 dollars”. And, you said, “but my buddy in second is trying to make money, while the guy I'm playing this week is trying to make the playoffs”.
Those two statements you made say a lot. A lot more than you intended. If you could be honest with yourself for a moment, you’d admit that in essence, it’s all about the money. It’s difficult enough for some people to play in an ethical manner when no money is involved, but add money into the mix…and people such as yourself will find all kinds of ways to justify that what they’re doing isn’t wrong, or cheating. Am I saying that your buddy is cheating? No. Cheating means that you’re breaking the rules…and I’ll add, not just the technical aspect of the rules…but the ‘spirit of the rule’. There are so many way a person can cheat…or be unethical in their play that no amounts of rules could possible cover all the possibilities. So…you either have people who put principles, ethics, fair play…and so on, ahead of winning…or they don’t. as I said…there are all kinds of way of getting ‘technically’…around the rules. But just because you can get by with something on a technicality…doesn’t mean that you haven’t done something wrong. Snake doesn’t sound like he wants middle schoolers in his league…he just wants people who want to put what’s honorable and right before winning.
