I need to keep 5 guys in a very power-hitter and strikeout pitcher oriented points only keeper league. So far keeping Howard and A-Rod, need to keep 3 of the following:
Brian Roberts 2B
Mark Reynolds 1B/3B
Dan Haren SP
Tommy Hanson SP
Yovani Gallardo SP
Cliff Lee SP
Any strong opinions? Leaning towards Reynolds, Hanson, Roberts (just bc no 2B are gonna be available)
Reynolds will still give you HR's, but how many? Was last year a norm, or just a overacheiving plateau? I'd go with Haran, Hanson and Gallardo. You say no 2B's be will available, if Beckham's available grab him early and wait till he's 2B eligible (he is playing 2B this year).
obviously you haven't done alot of fantasy research...
Last season Reynolds hit .341 BABIP (Batting Avg on Balls in Play) which is great... however he was well below the avg line drive rate... he only hits line drives 17% of the time... and that doesn't support such a high BABIP... he also had an inflated 26% HR/FB (flyball) ratio which led the majors and is 5% above his career rate... point is... last years #'s were inflated and he was lucky to hit .260... with a 38% career strikeout % and such a low linedrive % and expected dip in HR/FB ratio expect a more reasonable .245-.250 avg with 30-35 HR. With that low avg and lower HR total don't expect 100 RBI either... oh and the steals... he stole 11 bags in his entire minor league career and attempted only 13 in 2008... don't expect 20 steals again... especially considering his career OBP is only .338... point is Reynolds is overrated... TRADE HIM!!!! You can get alot out of him and won't have to be frustrated... he is ranked 19 overall this year in the Yahoo! game and you can get hot hitting SS Jose Reyes and Troy Tulowitzki at 20 / 21 overall... also look for Grady, Matt Holliday, Victor Martinez and Zack Greinke to be hanging around in the 20-30 ranking... and if you are a suave trader you can trade up for Justin Upton, Ian Kinsler, or if you want a striking out slugger... Ryan Howard... point is take Bip Roberts, Dan Haren, and Reynolds but trade Reynolds before season even starts!!!
Can you make a trade??
Id say, Hansen, Haren, Lee, But Id try to package a two for one in a trade for Lincy, or Santana... Like a Gallardo/Hansen, if that doesnt work try Gallardo/Haren. But def. Keep 3 IF... Also, Id try to snag a middle IF early possibly in a trade because they are hard to come by
based on your 2B situation and likely lack of solid players available in the draft, go with Roberts like you said. then i agree, go with Reynolds and Hanson. Hanson is more iffy than the others, but better over potential for a great year.
seeing as you have Howard/A-Rod..i would keep Hanson, Lee, Reynolds...as for acquiring a 2B..there are other options to look at besides power..unless thats all your league is based on points-wise...but, if you could steal Jose Lopez...he would do you fine for 20HR's

I see the Cliff Lee support has emerged haha. True Lopez is going to be out there, and no the league has every stat category imagineable really (BB, singles, doubles, triples, runs, rbi, stolen bases). Besides, I could just draft Roberts myself haha.
I have tons of faith in Hanson, and I don't think I can let go of such a young and promising talent in a keeper league. If I do keep Haren maybe I'll just trade him at midseason.
