    Olympic overhaul

I've been pretty active with trades since the first few days of the break. I'm in a standard H2H yahoo league, in 4th place -16 points back of 2nd place and hoping to catch him so I can get the first round playoff bye.

    Pre Break
C: Toews, Backes (RW), Kadri, Koivu IR
    LW: E. Kane, Lucic, L. Couture (C),Hartnell
RW: Vrabata, Perron (RW), R.Johansen (C)
    D: Chara, Bieksa, Carlson, Empty
    G: Rask, Quick, Miller

C: Toews, Datsyuk (LW), Kadri, Koivu
    LW: Parise, E. Kane, Lucic,
RW: Nash (LW), Backes (C), Vrabata, B. Little (C)
    D: Bieksa, Carlson, Empty, Empty
    G: Rask, Quick, C. Johnson- Boston's backup

Couple things, I was pretty regularly loosing the SOG category and winning PIMS. I feel I still have enough grit to be competitive in PIMS and have made a huge improvement in SOG. I picked up C. Johnson to give me all the Bruins remaining games- the B's being first or second in the NHL in GAA this can't hurt my goalie cats. The obvious void is on defense. As you can see I was already rolling with only 3 D-men and it didn't seem to hinder my team too much. Now I only have 2 and I'm a bit tempted to roll with it...Has anyone ever had much luck with this approach? I totaled up the matchups and I only trail my opponents by a few player appearances each week. I'm kind of thinking it would be quality vs. quantity- I could take it even a step further and put Koivu on IR and drop C. Johnson and pickup 2 more forwards.

    • Thanks guys,
I'll look to the FA list to find another D-men...at least 1. Visnovsky showed some promise before the break. He's a PP machine when he's on. J. Schultz has also turned it around lately and I wouldn't be surprised if he finished the season strong. P. Martin might also be a good pick up, with Letang out for the next mother or so He'll get first unit PP time with the powerful penguins. Brian Campbell is available along with Ehrhoff, Leddy, A. Green, A. Edler, Hamhuis, J. Faulk, Voynov, and Roman Josi who might be my front runner, he's been lighting it up lately. Any in put on having both of Bostons goalies? Rask has never stared more than like 50 games in a season and I hear the Boston coaching staff might play him less before the playoffs to get him fresh and rested up. Although at the same time having Johnson on my team feels a bit like a wasted roster space. He is a nice insurance police tho.

    • I think rolling with only two D is a mistake. You're going to run into logjams with so many forwards and invariably have to sit a bunch. You've got a good group of forwards in general, and you're right about being able to lose one or two players and still win the PIM's. I'd weed out the poorest performers of the bunch - Kadri is doing so-so, but I'd get rid of him given your other C eligible players, and Perron and Vrbata haven't done much since before Christmas.

I'd look to the FA list for a D-man who plays on the PP and generates shots. In a lot of Yahoo standard leagues there are some real quality young guys who are still available - Niskanen, Krug, McDonagh, Sekera & Maata spring to mind. You could try trading for a marquis D-man but you're probably not willing to give up the pieces needed to get a guy like Karlsson, Keith or Byfuglien.

      • I agree with this. HUGE mistake undervaluing D.

Given the amount of roster conflicts you will have, I actually think you very much weakened your team.

You have great depth at F, but that does nothing for you if most of them are sitting on your bench and you're always having to make decisions due to conflicts, while also leaving 2 empty spots every night (at least), not having even one strong D anymore (Bieksa and Carlson are "nice" but def not strong), and you SEVERELY weakened your goaltending, which is always a bad decision in fantasy hockey. Miller wasn't getting wins, but with his potential move at the trade deadline to a better team, that was a really bad choice.

I think you overthought this and screwed yourself if I'm being totally hones.
