Obviously this question is way past due, seeing as fantasy hockey is coming to a close.
Anyway, this was my first time ever playing, and I was wondering what the general strategy is for starters/rosters in rotisserie leagues. Basically, in the beginning of the year, I pretty much started everyone all the time. Then I started noticing the max games limit, and changed it up so I only had one player start in each forward position, regardless of whether they were playing or not. And just last week I hit the max for all my forward positions.
Do you always want to have only your stars starting? Or should there be some kind of rotation?-

Do you have some LW,RW players or C,RW? If so when you play those guys it will take away one for both positions that the player is eligible for so that is one thing to realy look out for. Most leagues will allow a fair amount of starts but if you are cutting it close dont hesitate to sit some of your weaker players, like if for example TB is playing SJ you can probably pass on playing Ryan Malone.

Did you just make that rule up? I'm sure that is NOT how it works. If someone is eligible for more than one position, they still only count for the position that you start them at.
To answer the original question, you will typically play your best players all the time, and only use your bench players if an injury occurs. That way, you get the most points for the games you use.
Of course there are strategies like if a player gets hot or cold, you can swap them out for a few games. The main thing to make sure you do, is to ensure you don't go under the max games. I always try to max out a few games before the end of the season just to make sure I didn't waste any games. Plus you can get an extra game or two if you only have 1 game left on a position and you start more than one player there, it will count for all the players that day.

As of last night I had 2 plays at C before I was maxed. I played Datsyuk at C and Marleau at LW. Today, I have reached my max and cant play anymore C. Since Marleau is LW,C eligible it looks like to me he ate a C spot even though he was started on my roster as a LW. Im not making this shit up.

that's not true at ALL. max games forces you to manage and learn from mistakes. if max games doesn't exist you just start everyone all the time, but max games makes you think.
my fave design is a large bench of players but only so many open slots every night meaning you actually have to follow every day and strategize. sure you'll always play your best but having a large roster gives a chance for even the guy that drafted last to have a shot.
i drafted 9th out of 12 this year and I'm fighting the number all year in the finals of the playoffs and to be honest it's only because of H2H. i got hurt in my positioning in the NON-snaking draft but i worked at it.

I think I had a decent team, but I wish I wasn't relying on my D-men for offensive output at this point. But I'm definitely looking forward to next year now that I have the gist of it.- View Replies

Good luck next year. This was my first year and although I knew about the max games, I realised that I had to play my best players most of the time. Like the others said, mainly injuries, hot/cold spells or matchups were the only reasons I used my bench players.

1) Make sure to have fun. The best I thing I learned was it's your team, if you don't like someone get rid of them. (with in reason)
2) I also find hockey a lot more lucky then baseball and football.
It's impossible to predict GWG, SHP and PPP. So draft the best players you can and hope things work out. If great players play bad it's not your fault. Luck plays a big part in fantasy sports.
3) When players have bad starts, not 1-2 weeks but 2-3 months you really need to decide if want them. It's easy to hold on to big name players and wait for them to turn it around. sometimes the waiver wire has much better players.
4) Be active on the waiver wire. When you see a new player get hot, grab them. The worst you can do is realease them.
Good Luck! - View More Messages
