Maholm tried to throw Friday but was still bothered by his sore left wrist, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. "We shut him down after about 10, 12 tosses," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Just as suspected. It's going to be a while."
Gonzalez's words indicate Maholm may not be ready to return from the DL when first eligible August 5, though the true severity of his setback is uncertain at the moment. Rookie Alex Wood was shaky in place of Maholm on Thursday, and with Tim Hudson (ankle) now lost for the season, the Braves figure to push to get Maholm back as soon as possible.
