I was reading up some of the postings on the fantasy football message boards. I think it's a recent addition that took effect starting with the fantasy football season. You "unlock medals" by doing certain things during the season like making a trade, scoring X amount of points, etc.
I'm pretty sure that the trophy system is still in effect for how you finish in your league.
