Can I do anything except cross my fingers?

Long story short my system crapped out and my team more or less auto drafted leaving me with a less then desirable pitching staff. I've managed to swing a trade to improve my relief pitching (didn't even have a closer, not that I'm completely satisfied with who I have now but it was best case scenario with who was willing to deal).

Here is my roster, do any of the guys below my lineup improve my pitching or do I just ride it out and hope for the best? Keep in mind it is a 50 innings min league.

    Lineup
    C - Russel Martin
    1B - Conor Jackson
    2B - Jose Lopez
    3B - Ryan Zimmerman
    SS - Jason Bartlett
    IF - Ian Stewart
    OF - BJ Upton
    OF - Kosuke Fukodome
    OF - Josh Hamilton
    UTIL - Elijah Dukes
    UTIL - Selmon Young
    Bench - Stephen Drew
    Bench Joe Mauer
    DL - Alex Rodriguez

    SP - Eric Bedard
    SP - Scott Baker
    SP - Joba Chamberlain
    SP - Max Scherzer
    SP - Oliver Perez
    RP - Troy Percival
    RP - Kerry Wood
    P - Scott Downs
    Bench - Mike Pelfrey
    Bench - Brandon McCarthy
    Bench - Randy Wolf
    DL - Justin Duchscherer

Is is really that bad? I know it could be worse and it was, I've made the most of waivers and swung one trade without completely gutting what I do have... I am kicking myself in the ass for not dropping Wolf or McCarthy and picking up David Price after someone waived him although there was no short term relief guaranteed there either...

Anyway I'm just curious if anyone sees a potential payoff move from the following on waivers... Phil Hughes (Wang can't last much longer), Tommy Hanson (Jo Jo is a no no), Justin Masterson (Looked ok today), Ben Sheets (?), Franklin Morales (His starting tomorrow), Barry Zito (I'm reaching here...), Aaron Cook... God am I actually asking about Aaron Cook?

    Any words of wisdom?

    • So it's about 1 week later and after making some moves here is my updated lineup... I think it's solid enough all around now to compete... Oswalt, Vazquez and Bedard to me are a pretty good 1-2-3 in a 14 team mixed fantasy league, my batters are pretty good on paper and I think at the end of the day Percival is my weakest link (because of the likelihood of an injury), but there are just not alot of options at this point... and once again keep in mind I need 50 innings per week.

      Lineup
      C - Joe Mauer
      1B - Jose Lopez
      2B - Ian Stewart
      3B - Ryan Zimmerman
      SS - Jason Bartlett
      IF - Jorge Cantu
      OF - BJ Upton
      OF - Kosuke Fukodome
      OF - Josh Hamilton
      UTIL - Elijah Dukes
      UTIL - Hideki Matsui
      BENCH - Conor Jackson
      DL - Stephen Drew

      SP - Roy Oswalt
      SP - Javier Vazquez
      SP - Eric Bedard
      SP - Scott Baker
      SP - Joba Chamberlain
      RP - Troy Percival
      RP - Kerry Wood
      P - Rafael Soriano
      Bench - Mike Pelfrey
      Bench - Phil Hughes
      Bench - Randy Wolf
      Bench - Max Scherzer
      DL - Justin Duchscherer

Now I'm looking for some feedback on dropping my weakest SP to pickup the best available player, to me it's a toss up between the guys listed on the bench with Randy Wolf being the likeliest candidate. I'm looking to pickup one of the following... Asdrubal Cabrera, Josh Anderson, Coco Crisp, Dexter Fowler, Jordan Schafer, Melky Cabrera, Chris Iannetta (could be worth stashing as trade bait) or Tommy Hanson (again to stash as trade bait).

So who would you drop/pickup ??? I don't think I'll get a much higher calibre of player by trying to trade one of these guys, the few people in the league going through some injury trouble with pitching seem willing to ride out the injuries and keep there hitting lineup together...

    • Grab Hanson now.

Also trade Mauer for a front line starter to a team that has Pierzinski or an equal catching

    • is that Selmonella Young? id drop him, hell hurt you

    • Hmmm, well I am a buyist SF fan and I think Zito is going to have a turnaround year.... but anways, none of those FA sound appealing.

Your going to have to give a little to get a little, and it really depends on if you are willing to part with one of your big name hitters for a pitcher. I would trade one of you big name guys, say a Josh Hamilton and a decent hitter, for a Top tier pitcher, and a decent pitcher. (I would do some research on this "decent pitcher" Go for a proven winner that is slumping, whose trade value is low at the moment and get him dirt cheap.) It may off at in the end.

    • So I zeroed in on the managers with the weakest catches and took the best deal possible and flipped Russel Martin for Javier Vazquez and dropped the recently acquired Porcello and grabbed Chris Iannetta off waivers to replace Martin after someone had gave up on him... so here is my updated lineup, certainly more respectable... now that it is would you waive anyone to take a flyer on Hughes or Hanson or should I reacquire Porcello or someone else?

      Lineup
      C - Russel Martin
      1B - Conor Jackson
      2B - Jose Lopez
      3B - Ryan Zimmerman
      SS - Jason Bartlett
      IF - Ian Stewart
      OF - BJ Upton
      OF - Kosuke @#$%odome
      OF - Josh Hamilton
      UTIL - Elijah Dukes
      UTIL - Selmon Young
      Bench - Stephen Drew
      Bench Joe Mauer
      DL - Alex Rodriguez

      SP - Javier Vazquez
      SP - Eric Bedard
      SP - Scott Baker
      SP - Joba Chamberlain
      SP - Oliver Perez
      RP - Troy Percival
      RP - Kerry Wood
      P - Scott Downs
      Bench - Mike Pelfrey
      Bench - Max Scherzer
      Bench - Randy Wolf
      DL - Justin Duchscherer

    • It's kind of rough b/c you don't really have offense (until Arod comes back... then you'll have a substantial improvement) or pitching. You should dangle some of your players out there to see what their value is. Martin and Dukes are two people whose name exceeds their value... best bet... target people who are underperforming. Look at people's O-value... and their actual value as a start.

    • this team will be a challenge to fix, but i think it's doable. wait for mauer to get some at bats in and start hitting then trade him or martin for a good SP. ARod will be back, Hamilton, and BJ will turn things around. Drew can still end up playing well. I'd find something in FA other than Wolf and McCarthy even if it's reliable RP types for a while - Kuo. wait for mauer to gain value and you'll be fine.

    • Pick up Jordan Zimmermann. I expect a good year out of him. Trade for a closer.

    • If I were you I'd cross my fingers, go to church, and then after that doesn't work, I'd beg for somebody to give me a mercy trade, and then after that doesn't work I'd just quit. This team sucks as bad as it possibly could.

    • just give up this team sucks
