Can I do anything except cross my fingers?

Justin Masterson likely won't be starting very many games for Boston, otherwise I would like him. The Red Sox have great pitching depth considering they've added Penny and Smoltz, with Masterson and Clay Buchholz waiting in the wings.

That leaves the downside: the two great prospects have to wait until the veterans at the back end of the rotation falter, get hurt, or retire before they can break in.

Tommy Hanson could be worth a pickup once the Braves call him up, assuming he goes into the rotation. I mean, the Braves seem really high on him, and remember the last "Tommy" to come up through the Braves system (Tom Glavine)? LOL.

I believe Bedard, Baker, Perez, and possibly McCarthy are all expendable if there are strong FA options. Some ideas I'll throw out there: Tim Wakefield (ERA risk, but always manages to get 14-18 wins), Kyle Lohse, Andrew Miller, Jordan Zimmermann (see how he fares in his debut tonight), Bronson Arroyo, Mike Hampton, Jason Marquis.

Maybe you can try to trade Joba Chamberlain for Edinson Volquez, or another CL. But I just hate Joba. LOL. Volquez will PROBABLY come around (maybe he gets sent down for a few weeks?) and put up a solid season, and you might be able to find an owner looking to dump him because he has struggled.

Cook was key in helping the Rockies get to the World Series in '07 and won 17 last year, but has been pounded every time out this year.

Sheets is currently an unsigned free agent, so watch for him to get a deal somewhere. Assuming he does get signed, he could vastly improve your staff.

Pedro Martinez is also waiting on a Major League contract, so he might be useful if he gets signed as well.
