Gotta say I hate the yankees and the red sox, no matter what they say, are just as bad, almost worse. At least the Yankees don't lie about what they are, but Damon's not a bad player, he's got some pop and some speed. I wouldn't worry about him losing his job to anyone, they don't have any real prospects and have little of value to trade for a new outfielder to replace him. I tihnk he's a safe bet to roll with.
it also depends on who else you have. Damon will get stolen bases that some other outfielders wont get you. He's not a huge homerun hitter, but more of a solid hitter, like most lead off man are. Obviously Ichiro or someone like that would be better to have, but Damon still isnt a bad start

I don't have a good option over Damon. I could pick up C Patterson, but Damon either had more power or steals than everyone else available. So he has the best combination of skills for the Fantasy categories.

I re3ally don't appreciate getting advice that based on whether or not you like the team that a player plays for. If I were to just draft players from my favorite team (It would be impossible), it would be a bust. This is fantasy.
I would start the season with him. He is their lead-off man, which means there should be a ton of runs for him.
Once he gets hurt, as usual, bench him, dump him, trade him, whatever you want.
But you should enjoy the benefit of a health Damon at the top of Great Yankee lineup for as long as you can.
On the decline, JD is above average. If he comes back this year pissed off at how old he played last year, he should be better than most players, but he is not a star. In other words, if I had to choose between Chris Young (a flawed, up and coming star) or Damon, you go with Young and keep JD on the bench to see how it goes. Unless he completely re-discovers his mojo at mid 30 something JD is still better than most but definitely second tier.

Yeah. I need steals, so JD wouldn't help. My team is pretty solid I think. Competitive I hope.
