    Bryant--keeper worthy at this point?

I'm in a league where we keep 5 players….my 4 locks for keepers are Goldschmidt, Encarnacion, Donaldson, and Gomez. I have Kris Bryant and am considering keeping him (he is the #1 rated prospect in all of baseball, according to ESPN)…though it's a lot to use a keeper on a guy who has never played an MLB inning.

Other choices for 5th keeper include Jay Bruce, Dustin Pedroia, Craig Kimbrel, and Masahiro Tanaka (injury pending).

We play 1b, 3b, CI, and UTIL positions, so I'd have a spot for all of them if I go the Bryant route.

    Thoughts?

    • Ask me in early March when it matters. Your other four guys could be out together for dinner and a car smashes through the window, ending four careers. Why play "What if?" 7 months from decision time? Bryant could get called up, hit .490 with 30 HR and 80 RBI down the stretch, making your decision very easy... And never keep a closer, it is the easiest spot to replace. Tanaka healthy makes for a much better choice.

    • At this point, I wouldn't say he is? I don't like any of your options for a 5th keeper, but I think I would still take Kimbrel, a healthy Tanaka, and maybe even Pedroia (depending on how he finishes the year) over Bryant. I don't normally even draft closers because you can get all the closers you need from the FA early in the season, but why wouldn't you keep a guy like Kimbrel, who might actually be drafted in the top 60 (and actually give you top 60 value), and then draft Bryant a few rounds later? I really don't think you will see Bryant drafted THAT high next year, even in a keeper league. Maybe I am wrong, but personally, I will be not be keeping him even in a league where I get 8 keepers.

    • Why not wait until the beginning of next season to make the decision.

    • Definitely keep Bryant. Bruce is productive, but I'm sure you'll be able to draft another outfielder with good power; Pedroia is not worth keeping; I would never keep a closer; and while Tanaka was mostly excellent before his injury, I certainly wouldn't bother to keep him in this situation.

    • Keep Bryant, your other options are questionable in their own ways (Tanaka injury, Bruce's BA, Pedroia diminishing production). Bryant could start the year out in Chitown and make a major impact Year 1, not to mention the 10-15 after that.

    • I would take that chance and keep him yes. I definitely wouldn't keep Pedroia and I wouldn't keep any closer. Bruce and Tanaka are decent keepers, but you've got some established guys to keep already. Roll the dice with that last keeper slot.
