Draft and Trade Talk Message Board
I am betting Jason Hammel may be available.
Of those you listed, I'd lean Maholm.
Adding in Hammel, comparatively:
Maholm 30 years old. Career K/9 5.70, last year 7.73 in 68 2/3 innings.
Hammel 30 years old. Career K/9 6.56, last year 8.62 in 118 innnings.
Capuano 34 years old. Career K/9 7.50, last year 7.35 in 198 1/3 innings.
Brett Myers 32 years old. Career K/9 7.28, last year 5.64 in 65 1/3 innings. Myers is a better closer than a starter. His K/9 drops precipitously as a starter.
Expected ERA and Whips of all the above represent why they are Free Agents. Hammel this year, even in the AL East, would be my choice if I was forced to pick one.
I'd go with a spring training breakout SP..
If he as a bad start,or 2 in the regular season drop him for another SP until you eventually find the SP you're happy with. Also stash Brandon Beachy on your DL.When healthy Beachy is probably a top10 SP.
(You COULD stream SPs on & off your roster until Beachy returns.)
