Mainly because you took too many chances and believed too much of the hype. Aviles, Lawrie, Ross - All overpaid for and you are getting a bad go around with JJ but you knew the risks when you drafted him. You knew this was a possibility with the injury prone over-hyped team.
You might consider packaging some of your redundant desirable bats like Lawrie to get pitching and free batting bench to "build" a starter if none are available by waiver/trade. Take 2-3 great late inning setup men on teams that give them 5-6 wins a season and 60-70 ks with good ERA/WHIP and you've got a 15-18 win starter with around 200ks. One of my favorite tricks when I don't have great starters. Johnson hopefully will pick up.
batting is ok.
SP needs help. Maybe you could even use some high leverage RP w/o saves a la chapman and jansen, or reed.
you have a lot of closers to deal, and motte would bring the most back in trade.
Yes pitching is your downfall... maybe you could trade one of your bats for a stronger SP?
Your team is eerily similar to my own but my pitching is stronger and that has carried my team up to this point.
