Roto Arcade - Fantasy

Known as the Sacagawea of fantasy primers, the Weekly Rundown guides head-to-head owners through a forest of obscure stats and exploitable matchups in an attempt to help solve lineup conundrums. While reading, keep in mind matchups are subject to change due to managerial moves, unforeseen injuries and Mother Nature's influences.

Excitement surrounding September call-ups is unequivocally palpable. Already several pre-roster expansion additions have made a noticeable impact (i.e. Chris Davis(notes) and Eric Young Jr.). But lost in the fanfare of the youth movement, one of fantasy's historically dependable mound anchors is on the brink of making his season debut.

On Monday, Atlanta rotation rock Tim Hudson(notes) will make his triumphant return to the majors. Recovering from Tommy John surgery over the past several months, the 34-year-old groundball coaxer struggled initially during his arduous five-game rehab stint, particularly locating his fastball. However, his 3.38 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and 11:2 K:BB split in 18.2 innings at Gwinnett was encouraging.

Cautious owners questing for an October champagne shower understandably would never trust a starter coming off a major arm procedure. It can take weeks or even months for a player to fully regain his pre-surgery form. On occasion, some never rebound. But because Hudson is a variable finesse pitcher, the odds of a quick recovery are fairly strong.

For now, the Braves brain trust plans to install a six-man rotation to accommodate the two-time All-Star. However, according to Hudson, his appearances might be somewhat erratic:

"I'm not saying that I'm going to be in there every five days from here on out. I'm not saying that at all. But if there is a time where I start a game and it might be eight or nine days before I get in there again, then sure I'd go down to the 'pen and help them out if that's where I could be used until my next start."

It's difficult to assess exactly how the righty will be deployed. If he does net roughly 6-7 starts, he could prove very useful, especially over the final 10 days of the season. During that stretch the Braves face perennial NL doormat Washington twice.

Undoubtedly, employing the 40-percent owned hurler is a roll of the dice. But because of his terrific command (career 2.76 BB/9), excellent GB/FB splits (2.55) and lack of a pitch count restriction, risk takers could be richly rewarded.

Fearless Forecast (rest of season): 37.1 innings, 3 W, 3.98 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 24 K

ah yes my braves and an abundance of SP again...timmy hud can surely regain his form, if not at least for a couple spot stars against the old senators who dont have nyjer anymore and are bidding in the bryce harper sweepstakes. Medlen is nice, and a hudson/medlen combo like the martinez/moyer could work. bring up heyward baby

If Atlanta really is going to a 6 man rotation, why do they have 2 guys w/2 starts this week for their 7 games?

Huddy was the best DL add a month ago...I went for it once A.Ram came back, no reason not to with Brave's schedule in Sept, Washington a couple times, what's not to like?....Unless, of course, Hoffman really does go to the Giants (dropped Butler for Coffey), but not likely, activate Huddy after Mon.

I believe Cahill won't see a second start either since Oakland is doing the 6-man thing too.

Quick question: If a team that is in 8th place of an 11 team keeper league decides to drop Johan Santana because he shut down the rest of the year, instead of dropping Randy Johnson (who is also on the DL), would that seem like a cheating move to anyone? And do I have a legitimate reason to call for a protest if he is picked up? Any player picked up off of waivers in our league is worth $7! Plus there is only 25 moves allowed for the entire year, and of course I have exhausted all of mine due to injuries and underachieving players( i.e. Chris Davis, Soto, Smoltz, Quentin, Nady to name a few).

Hey Chris, give this guy the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up to stupidity instead of calling it cheating. But yes, you have every right to be angry and start thinking collusion or cheating. I would ask your commissioner to reverse the move and place Santana back on their roster and take off Johnson (or another worthless player), especially if the team is not going to the playoffs or has no chance of winning any money (if your league participates in such an illegal activity). If this guy is new to fantasy baseball, explain to him who Johan Santana is and why he's so valuable. If he's not new and not stupid, see if he's friends with the team with the #1 waiver priority. If so, this may be someone your commissioner should keep an eye on in the future (and maybe replacing). And if the commissioner in your league allows this or does nothing, or is the guy who benefited cause he picked him up, consider looking for a new league or replacing your current non active commissioner.

Latos is going to get shutdown for the season after 1 or 2 more starts (he's on a innings limitation sort of like the Joba rules for the rest of 2009. Gio has averaged a K + per inning over his last 3 starts and his next 2 games are @ home vs KC and Sea. Gio is clearly the choice.
