1) The 44.0 percent-owned Joey Votto hit three home runs, and he hit 'em to all fields. That gives Votto seven on the year. He's batting .302.

Votto also stole his first base of the season. He swiped 41 bases over the previous two minor league seasons, so the steal is noteworthy.

There are many first baseman who are more heavily-owned than Votto, yet have done little this season to deserve it.

2) Edinson Volquez continued his dominance: 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 6 BB, 10 K. (Yeah, we really need to get a headshot of him wearing a Reds' cap). Take a look at Volquez's pitch-count today. That's five straight games with 100 or more.

3) Brandon Phillips left the game in the seventh with a bruised calf. It doesn't sound unusually serious, though, and the Reds are off tomorrow.

Ugh, I was in the midst of bartering out a trade with Votto as the undercard when THIS happened.
Yahoo! just emailed me to let me know that the trade has been declined. Boo.
Any ideas on when Homer Bailey comes back to hang out with Volquez and Cueto?

That's really going to mess with my International League-only team. Let's just see what the Mets do to Matt Belisle on Friday...

Once the Reds get smart and send Fogg and this Belsilie guy to the bullpen. Baily should be up here already.

Using this forum to express my continued anguish over the Gallardo/Tulo injury double. It still hurts!

Only Dusty would let Volquez throw 118 pitches when up by 5+ runs......

I would imagine that the Cubs will rebound and the Reds will sink within the next two weeks. The Cubs hitters all got hot at the same time and they are cooling off together as well. The Reds are relying on young arms and when Dusty Baker is your manager, that does not bode well. He should have pulled Volquez after the fifth today when the rain was falling and the victory was secured. Instead, he put another 20+ pitches on his arm. This guy, Vert, at StopDonating.com has predicted that Volquez and Cueto will both miss major time over the next two years much like Prior and Wood when Dusty was with the Cubs.

Bullpen? Fogg just might be DFA.

It all depends on how durable Volquez and Cueto are. At the moment, we don't known if they'll break down. Certain pitchers can throw a number of pitches and not break down, but other can't. Wood and Prior were just fragile. Baker does deserve blame, but he gets too much blame for the fragile bodies of Wood and Prior. What's the explanation of Harden's injury history then? Dusty Baker secretly managed the A's?

Man I almost picked up Votto to fill my OF hole this last weekend but decided on Carlos Quentin instead.
    MISTAKE.

Here's an even worse MISTAKE: I actually have Votto on my team, but since he hadn't done anything for the last 10 days or so, I had him sit on my bench, in favor of Delgado who I picked up from the scrap cause was heating up.
Result: Delgado didn't even play today, Votto hit 3HR and had 1SB.
I usually don't get worked up too much about my fantasy team, but this one REALLY p'd me off.

#9 It does depend on their durability, and Baker does get over criticized for Wood and Prior, however it is simply not an intelligent venture to see how many pitches/innings you can squeeze out of a greenhorn like Cueto and Volquez. These guys aren't used to a 162 game season, and they certainly are not physically equipped to continue throwing 100+ every time out. Baker is a fool and this organization needs to do something before all of their pitching prospects go the way of Wood.

118 pitches? How irresponsible!! Again, if pitch count restrictions are supposedly reducing arm injuries then why are we seeing more today than 25 years ago when there were no such limitations? Anyone? Anyone?

I looked at the back of an old Nolan Ryan card...
how did he manage to throw so many games for so many years besides the fact that he was awesome...
I mean he had 20+ win seasons AND some loses, which, if my math is correct, amounts to a lot more pitches than a lot of of pitchers throw today....was it just that the normal rotation carried less than 5 "back in the day" when fords were built to last???
