In the final home start of his ridiculous collegiate career, San Diego State junior Stephen Strasburg threw a 17-strikeout no-hitter against Air Force. The 20-year-old is now 11-0 for the Aztecs, with an obscene 164 Ks in 87.1 innings. He leads all amateur pitchers in hype, earning potential, and 103 mph fastballs. Strasburg has a 23-strikeout game to his credit, too.

Washington Nationals' acting general manager Mike Rizzo was reportedly in attendance at the no-no, scouting Strasburg in advance of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft. The Nats have the top overall pick, and there's just no way they'll pass on Strasburg at any price. If former Washington GM Jim Bowden can be believed, the decision was made long ago.

Somewhere, agent/advisor Scott Boras is grinning one of these smug little grins

Bowden has said of Strasburg, "This is the best amateur pitcher since I was born." (That would be May 18, 1961). He's also said that the right-hander will be pitching in the big leagues in September. Position yourself for the waiver claim now, dynasty owners.

Here's a clip of the final out from Friday's no-hitter, courtesy of an understandably excited fan who calls everyone "Dog":

He kind of looks demonic. No wonder he and Boras are in league.

The next Kerry Wood? Thin frame, 103mph? How long can it last?

Long enough for me to add him, then trade him for a mountain of talent in my NL dynasty league. That's how long. Hopefully.

Thin frame? I'm not so sure about that...according to the SI article about a month back, the reason he was so lightly recruited out of high school is because he was so out of shape and overweight. I haven't looked closely at any pictures to really compare, but my thought was that he was probably built pretty well. He'll take about two years to develop, but he will be a STUD if he can keep his arm healthy....

That's a valid point, Lee Majors. He will be quite the trading chip....seems like this happens every year. Last year, everyone was all over David Price as the best pitching prospect to come along in a long time. Back in 2005, it was Felix Hernandez. Can't really remember 2006 or 2007, but the odds are there was someone who came up late in the year that was called "the best pitching prospect to come along in a long time." The fantasy community jumps all over them, and then it takes a couple of years to develop. The good news about Strasburg is that he has already been to college, so maybe he can make the leap to the next level sooner. Why would the Nats want to use his arm in the majors this year? I wouldn't want to waste it this year. I'd wait until next year to bring him up....

Why would the Nationals bring him up in September? Just so that they can start his arbitration clock that much sooner? I doubt they'll be in a penant race. He'll be here in 2010.

On buzz and trade value, I'd still say Strasburg, MDS.
As for September...Strasburg is going to sell tickets, which is more than we can say for most other highly regarded prospects. There might not be many other reasons to attend Nats games in September.

Is there any chance he could sign with ANY agent but Boras? If he signs with Boras, he'll be a one-man stimulus package.

This just in!!: The Nationals pass on Strasburg because of their incompetence and the Mariners, with the 2nd pick, acquire him instead!!!! (If only) =( The good thing about Mr Z. is that he is a damn good talent evaluator, so whom ever he picks, I'll stand by it....unlike Bavasi...dumb ass...

John R...Felix in 05, Price in 08...but dude, how could you forget Tim Lincecum!? He was the other prospect to come up that was in extremely high regard in between the two. If I recall correctly, Cole Hamels was called up the same year too.

06 Liriano was the best pitcher to happen to the fantasy community.
I know this guy doesn't count as a prospect but last year's Ryan Dempster was quite the prize. His track record certainly didn't point to those results.

Once again yahoo spoils another great pitching prospect. Thanks for coming in.
Bottom line though - the kid is good. Has the tools to be better than current hyped up sleepers Price/Hanson.

some others. Remember when baseball america had Homer Bailey as the #1 overall prospect? Andrew Miller is another, Verlander a third. There's 2 or 3 of these guys every year. Sometimes their great other times they take a while. The point is value. When Strasburg gets drafted we'll get another of these articles, same for when he comes up. People always want to be a scout, say they knew a guy would break out so you find those and get known commodities. Maybe it bites you but I'd guess 80% of the time the guy trading for the prospect gets burned.
