Roto Arcade - Fantasy

Things change fast in the NFL and one of the objectives to fantasy players is to figure out the new landscape quicker than the opposition. With that in mind, I'll be presenting to you weekly position ranks based on "rest of the season" value. What's already happened matters only as an audition; this list would be my cheatsheet if I had a new draft tonight. Your intelligent disagreement is most welcome in the comments, and will help all of us going forward; offer critiques all you want, but attach some logical reasoning with it. Dig in. Rules and specs on the ranks are tagged at the bottom of the post.

41. Kerry Collins(notes)

Comments: The top three could really be in any order and that goes for the next three as well. And overall, there's outstanding depth at this position in 2009. … I'd go higher on Kurt Warner if I knew for sure that he'd last the season. And obviously the line is a big problem in Green Bay; even the Lions got a handful of sacks against Aaron Rodgers last week. … Chad Henne will have his share of ups and downs but his presence opens up the Miami playbook; he can make some throws that Chad Pennington(notes) clearly can't. … If the Titans won't let Vince Young play after the bye, why is he even on the roster? Cut the guy and let him get on with his life.

58. Mewelde Moore(notes)
59. Kevin Faulk(notes)
60. Shonn Greene(notes)
61. Sammy Morris(notes)
62. Le'Ron McClain(notes)

Comments: On paper this looks like a good week for Matt Forte to get off the skids, up against a Cincinnati defense that struggles to defend pass-catching backs. … It feels a little false to have Laurence Maroney even into the 30s, but he's a starter for now on team that will produce running lanes (everyone has to fear Tom Brady and friends first). … The usage patterns in Buffalo forces me to put Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson where they are. But if it were my team, I'd give Jackson half of the touches, at minimum. … Everyone wants to write off Thomas Jones but let's accept that he's still in a pretty good spot; the run-blocking is strong, he's the automatic goal-line guy, Shonn Greene isn't in the mix yet and Leon Washington still doesn't have a touchdown. … Larry Johnson can't say the Chiefs aren't committing to him – he's got 116 carries, fourth-most in the league. But the quality of the run blocking in KC is dreadful.

14. Donald Driver(notes)
15. Anquan Boldin(notes)
16. DeSean Jackson(notes)

61. Nate Washington(notes)
62. Bryant Johnson(notes)
63. Muhsin Muhammad(notes)
64. Patrick Crayton(notes)
65. Josh Morgan(notes)

Comments: Keep in mind this is the most volatile fantasy position there is; while quarterbacks get 30-40 direct chances to help you every week and a primary back gets 15-20 chances, receivers have to make do with 8-10 indirect opportunities to make a play every week. Even the biggest names at the receiver spot will have their rough patches. … There's no right answer on Calvin Johnson, because no one really knows just how hurt he is. … Be careful with those secondary New Orleans receivers; the Saints found a way to spread things around and keep most everyone happy last week, but there's still just one football and some of their TDs will come on the ground, and occasionally on defense or special teams. … It's probably a good time to make a pitch for DeSean Jackson; the Eagles still pass to set up the pass, they've already had their bye, and Jackson won't be quiet much longer. … The Mohamed Massaquoi situation reminds us that opportunity is just as important as talent in so many instances. … A shame we have to watch Kenny Britt sink with this offense.

Tight End
1. Dallas Clark(notes)
2. Antonio Gates(notes)
3. Tony Gonzalez(notes)
4. Jason Witten(notes)
5. Brent Celek(notes)
6. Owen Daniels(notes)

11. Heath Miller(notes)
12. Visanthe Shiancoe(notes)
13. Jermichael Finley(notes)
14. Jeremy Shockey(notes)
15. John Carlson(notes)
16. Todd Heap(notes)

24. Sean Ryan(notes)
25. Bo Scaife(notes)
26. Kevin Boss(notes)
27. Randy McMichael(notes)
28. Daniel Coats(notes)

Comments: Shake out the top three in any order you like. I've been a Jason Witten apologist for years, but he's not in that Top 3 discussion at the moment. … John Carlson is so sure thing even when Matt Hasselbeck is playing, and all bets are off if we see Seneca Wallace again this season (odds are we will; Hasselbeck's taking a pounding behind that terrible Seahawks OL). … Tony Scheffler still isn't a perfect fit for what the Broncos want to do on offense but he's establishing a nice rapport with Kyle Orton.

27. Tennessee Titans
28. Cleveland Browns
29. Kansas City Chiefs
30. Detroit Lions
31. St. Louis Rams
32. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Comments: Even when the Jets were riding high on defense, where were the sacks? Run-stopping is going to be a major problem without Kris Jenkins(notes). … Who's the Defensive Coordinator of the Year – Mike Nolan or Gregg Williams? … Cincinnati's defense looked a little frisky but all bets are off now that sackmaster Antwan Odom(notes) is done for the year.

Ranking Rules and Disclaimers: Assume a yardage/touchdown format, no points per reception. Defensive ranks do not consider special-teams scoring. Player values will fluctuate from league-to-league based on league rules and size, owner personalities and biases, and 1,001 other small factors that you'll know better in your group than I will, removed from it. Weekly ranks are a totally different animal from season-long ranks; the Yahoo! staff releases week-specific ranks on Friday.
