Someday the "Searching for Jay Bruce..." series will be collected in a fine, leather-bound commemorative edition and shipped at no cost to people who buy PLUS leagues. It's our gift to you, a way of expressing thanks for your ongoing support.

Until that day arrives, however, you can only experience the series here, on Fridays, one potential call-up at a time.

The San Diego Padres are very good...at making outs.

Their team on-base percentage is .318, second-lowest in the National League.

But you really have to hand it to the Padres, because when they do reach base, they...well, no, nothing happens. They've scored the second-fewest runs in baseball (253), and they have the second-lowest team slugging percentage (.372).

They're just not a very productive lineup.

That would seem to create an opportunity for 24-year-old Chase Headley, a left-fielder hitting .303/.383/.543 at Triple-A Portland. Headley has 23 doubles and 12 home runs after 254 minor league at bats. Thanks to a brief, eight-game appearance with San Diego last season, Headley is already in the Yahoo! player pool, and he's eligible at third base.

The switch-hitter is only 0.2 percent-owned, but you can expect him to be called-up soon, and to find himself quickly batting near the heart of the Padres' order. Headley should be on someone's roster in NL only leagues, and he's of interest in larger-than-public mixed leagues.

On Tuesday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported the following:

General Manager Kevin Towers said Triple-A left fielder Chase Headley remains on track for a promotion, but the club is "still contemplating the date for the call-up," which will not happen during the Padres-Dodgers series.

It didn't, but maybe by June 20, the beginning of a nine-game homestand.

Thanks for the warning, Behrens, I'll have him in my draft list for tonight's Commenters draft.

Headley could have been the solution to my hole at 3B but he will eventually only qualify at OF. Now I'm stuck with Edwin Encarnacion at 3B. Anyone know of an up and coming star at 3B?

guess there won't be many runs or rbis hitting in that great lineup

I knew about Headley a while ago. The guy's a great player, I think he'll contribute right away...though he'll probably have his fair share of struggles in that dreadful San Diego lineup. Dr. Hoops, he'll have the 3B eligibility this season, if that means anything. Otherwise...Neil Walker for the Pirates may make an impact. He's a converted catcher, swings a good bat...but has some defensive trouble. He's struggled since being promoted to AAA, so if he can iron things out, he may get the call-up next season, but I doubt it'll be this year. Of course, Brandon Wood is out there...and you can always make a move for Evan Longoria or Andy LaRoche...

All the more astonishing that Adrian Gonzalez leads the league in RBIs in such a low-scoring offense.
