Welcome to Roto Arcade, the only sports blog where readers are violently opposed to a daily links post. We still need a name for this thing. No, it will not go away.
• Prior to this season, Luke Hochevar(notes) had never quite delivered the minor league numbers to match his draft position (top overall pick in '06). Meanwhile, various other players from his class have already succeeded spectacularly in the big leagues (Lincecum, Brad Lincoln, Longoria, Kershaw, Scherzer, Joba). But Hochevar seemed to master Triple-A this year -- he was 5-1 with a 1.50 ERA and 1.10 WHIP at Omaha -- and he's been unexpectedly overpowering in his last two starts for Kansas City (22 Ks, 0 BB). Check the video of his last start here and note all the swinging Ks (11 of 13). The curve looks like a true put-away pitch. We recommend Joe Posnanski's quick write-up on Hochevar and the significance of his 13-K, no-walk start. "He has shown the clear potential for stardom," writes Joe. Hochevar will face Baltimore on Thursday. [JoePosnanski.com]
• Orioles prospect Chris Tillman(notes) is expected to debut on Wednesday against Zack Greinke(notes). Tillman has a 2.70 ERA at Triple-A Norfolk with 99 Ks in 96.2 innings. Please recall the plan that was suggested a few weeks back: "If Tillman debuts at home against the Royals in the July 27-30 series, he'll be start-worthy. You'll want to deal him or shelve him prior to September, though. The Orioles' end-of-season schedule is brutal." Hope for a nice opening line, then throw Tillman on the trade block. [Baltimore Sun]
• The tyrants who rule RotoWire are forcing Dalton Del Don to write a daily NFL training camp round-up. If Dalton succeeds, his young bride wins her freedom. Please root for him. In the first installment of "Training Camp Notes," Dalton discusses Trent Edwards' workout program. The young QB spent his offseason lifting seals. Or something. Check it out for yourself. • Matt Buser is talking strategy for head-to-head and roto hoops drafts. Matt wins things, so pay attention. [BuserSports]
• The Bucs acquired 20-year-old Hunter Strickland in the Adam LaRoche(notes) deal, and the right-hander's first start for Single-A West Virginia went awfully well. Strickland tossed the first six innings of a combined no-hitter, the first in franchise history. [MiLB.com]
• FF Today takes a look at five new arrivals who could flourish and five who could flop. You don't have to agree, just respect the effort. Incredibly useful site. [FFToday.com]
• John Perrotto is loaded with info on various Pirates trade chips: Freddy Sanchez(notes) to the Braves or Twins? John Grabow(notes) to the Dodgers, Marlins or Cubs? Zach Duke(notes) to the Phillies? (Seems like a sad consolation prize if they don't get Halladay). Jack Wilson(notes) to the Red Sox? [PiratesReport.com]
• Without officially stating a firm opinion, McCovey Chronicles nails the Garko deal: "So in five years, we'll look back at this trade and say, 'meh.'" Perfect use of "meh." [McCovey Chronicles]
• Daisuke Matsuzaka(notes) isn't too happy with his employer, if WEEI translators can be believed: "Matsuzaka, however, blames his season on the throwing program and training techniques that the Sox outlined for him once he came to the U.S. 'If I’m forced to continue to train in this environment, I may no longer be able to pitch like I did in Japan.'" I can't believe you guys doubt Schmitty, I've been scouting him... his fastball is back up to 80mph, what else does Ricciardi want? If that doesn't work then just sub in Jeff Weaver or should I say Dream Weaver to really put this deal over the top.
