When you roll out a blue carpet for a Republican vice presidential nominee, bad things are bound to happen. Sure enough, while Sarah Palin worked the runway without incident – and to only a light smattering of boos – to drop the ceremonial first puck for Friday's Kings-Blues tilt, the carpet tripped up St. Louis goalie Manny Legace, who toughed it out for a period before taking the rest of the night off to distribute Obama leaflets nurse an injured hip flexor.

The Associated Press reports that Legace will not start Saturday against Florida, so rookie Ben Bishop is the add if you're into spot-starting goalies in October. He stopped 15 of 17 shots in what finished as a 4-0 loss to the Kings. Matchup-wise you can do worse than a home tilt against the Panthers. Tomas Vokoun is due a night off after facing 50 shots in regulation against San Jose on Friday.

Legace only expects to miss one game, but as the Flyers have learned, Palin doesn't just blow in and out of town without leaving lingering effects. You'll want to sell high now on Andy McDonald. Before you close your laptop.

On a positive note, Palin appeared to get a kick out of the first period scrap between Cam Janssen and Sean O’Donnell. From the AP:

Palin watched the fight enthusiastically, clapping as the fight got more intense. By the time referees separated the combatants, Palin was waving an oversized foam Blues finger.

So there's no concern a McCain-Palin ticket tries to eradicate fighting from the NHL, which is good.

The Flyers, by the way, did finally win one Friday, but not until after learning center Daniel Briere will be sidelined up to a month with the dreaded sports hernia. Glen Metropolit stepped in as the pivot on Philly's No. 1 line against New Jersey, but saw very little time on the power play and was held off the scoresheet in the 6-3 win.

Congrats go out to Steve for his remarkable acheivement. Eighteen minutes is no Roger Bannister, but first is first, right? Anyway, look out Romig. Steve's insightful observations may one day put you out of work, as the dumbing-down of society nears completion.
At the risk of going off-topic Steve, allow me to thank God that Ontario is not a battleground state (Stephane Dion might beg to differ). Before tonight's Gerber-esque performance, Alex Auld was threatening to take more starts away from my Swiss Mystery. A Sarah Palin appearance would only have served to precipitate the annual injury to Spezza, as the Sens can already match Philly or St. Louis, loss-for-loss.
If the F&F gang were to mock draft NHL players for a basketball pool, would Chara retain his top ranking with the emergence of Big Ben Bishop?

I was just wondering if that nice coat and those hockey jersey's were at the expense of the RNC? Just kidding. Human beings can be way too serious sometimes.

@ Matt Romig...if that cheering throng translates into a light smattering of boos you need to give up reporting.

Also @ Matt Romig...nice way to spin the injured goalie as Sarah Palin's fault. You really should give up reporting.

hockey is awesome! What are you talkin about? And if no one cared, it wouldn't even be considered for a top story on Yahoo! Don't diss the sport just because you don't enjoy it or follow it for that matter.

For that person who said hockey is garbage. You were adopted. Nobody loves you, not even your pets. She got Manny hurt, she should get punched in the face. Bishop will own Florida this weekend.

Legace is a bummer of an injury, had him in my first hockey league and he was my forth goalie. I don't know much about the current NHL to spot start, but the league I'm in counts pts. for saves and has two goalie active slots , I was starting to hope for a big year from him. If Palin can do this to hockey what would happen if they win?

The people that rip on hockey are the people that really don't know the true background of their presidential candidate.
It would be funny to see BO on the ice, he wouldn't last the first few steps. Leave it to the media to rip on Palin for making the goalie struggle. Ha!
But, you won't hear the media share the words Biden said about BO's lack of experience and how he will face major issues if elected.

Regardless of your political views, this is just bad journalism. Matt Romig, you are a black eye to the profession of journalism. You need to go back to J school and learn about how you are supposed to report the facts. Yahoo, shame on you for carrying such trash.

Nice touch there Matt Romig - a star graduate from Jethro Bodine 6th grade writting class, I suppose. The story, as written, at this posting has it that Legace left the game to "distribute Obama leaflets."

Obama dosn't go to hockey games because he is afraid of Sarah Palin and if she debates him on ice with her greater experiance to run this great nation, he will slip on the ice as stumbles what to say. GO Palin!

And this is news worthy why..... oh right if its bad for the Republicans then its news, if its bad for the Democrats then it get s buried... Is it any wonder I use Google for 95% of my search activities anymore and have a direct link to the Yahoo mail server so I don't have to load up their Home page. Yahoo stop mirroring MSM and either cover issues equally or just don't run then have at least a little integrity.
