Last night, we had the most clichéd Chicago baseball experience imaginable.
It began in the Wrigley Field bleachers, ended at Murphy's, and relied heavily on the ephemeral pleasures of Old Style and sausage. Basically, the evening lacked only an unfunny cameo by Jim Belushi.
At some point, we noticed that the Cubs were scoring lots of runs, and that Geovany Soto was very much involved. He's now hitting .333 with five homers, and he has as many RBIs as Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols.
Soto is the top-ranked catcher for fantasy purposes so far, and he's No. 57 in the overall Yahoo! ranks. The second highest-ranked catcher is Ryan Doumit, who's batting .356 with four home runs. Neither player was among the first drafted at the position. In fact, Soto's ADP was 162.2, and Doumit was a free agent add in virtually all leagues.
If you look at the highest-ranked players at each position as of May 1, you'd find some of the usual suspects at many roster spots: Berkman at first, Utley at second, Chipper at third, and Hanley at short.
But at catcher we find Soto, and in the outfield we find Nate McLouth, Josh Hamilton and Pat Burrell. The top-ranked SPs include names like Cliff Lee, Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders and Edinson Volquez.
If you waited on those positions in your draft and you've been aggressive with add/drops all season, there's a good chance you're doing well. Feel free to gloat in the comments section...

I recently dropped Brad Hawpe for Matt Kemp in a competitive 10 manager league. This was about a week after I passed up the opportunity to claim Carlos Quentin on waivers which of course I regret. What do you think of the Kemp for Hawpe acquisition?
In the same league, I recently dropped Mark Reynolds for Evan Longoria. This was a couple of days after I passed up the opportunity to claim Edwin Encarnacion on waivers. Out of those 3 third basemen, who do you believe has the highest ceiling in 2008?
I am getting real fed up with some up of my struggling stars in these Head to Head competitive leagues. I have been very patient with Cano to this point. Would you drop him for Polanco at this point in the season?
I have Soriano set to come off the DL. I am thinking about dropping either Carlos Pena or Travis Hafner. Who do you recommend I drop or do you believe both will bounce back to have good seasons and that I should drop a less established player who is red hot right now?
Finally, my patience was beginning to wear thin with Troy Tulowitzki. Fortunately, I can now place him on the DL. I was thinking about either adding a hitting prospect in his absence or a starter or set-up man (holds) in his absence. What hitting prospect recently called up by the Mariners would you believe would be the most sure thing at this point? Clement or Balentin?
Thanks for convincing me to drop Cueto for Mad Max! Just wish I originally had picked up Edison Volquez instead from the start. What are your thoughts on Jurrjens of the Braves as to what he can accomplish in 2008?
I greatly appreciate all your advice and learn a great deal from your daily columns!

There are way too many good people available in your league Jeffrey. I wouldn't be celebrating about dropping Cueto either...

In a highly competitive 14 team roto league, I'm sporting Soto at catcher. My infield looks like this:
C- Soto
1B- Pujols
2B- BJ Upton
SS- Tejada
3B- Miguel Cabrera
Also have Sizemore, Carlos Gomez, Francouer, Glaus rounding out a first place team. Sick Nasty.

Hopefully my Max Scherzer waiver claim goes through so I can get rid of that overrated bum Johan Santana. I did not draft you in the second round for you to balloon my team ERA with a 3.12.
By adding Cliff Lee, Armando Gallaraga, and Volquez and tossing Bedard, Beckett, and CC Sabathia, I will be able to ride my sub 1.50 ERA and .55 WHIP straight to the championship.

7,
shallow league much??
seriously, edwin or longoria (whose stats have been overlooked, since he has almost HALF the at-bats of a regular) are both viable options one should pursue.
KEEEEP cano, at all cost (unless you get a really solid deal). dropping him at this point would be your biggest mistake (circa. may 01, 08). listen, he's off to a rough start but as an owner myself of cano, realize he's a career .310 hitter. the fact that it's a h-2-h means absolutely he's a keeper. you can ride him until he gets hot (unlike roto where he'll drain your stats).
I would personally try & move hafner/pena first (I personally have inquired about pena in multiple leagues of mine). i hate the fact that people make drops IN APRIL that don't reflect the draftees' values, clearly. or, the fact that they don't try to move them first, at the very least. push comes to shove, drop hafner (wonky - haha, his nickname is pronk..it rhymes - shoulder, i believe).
i avoided tully in all my drafts. unproven...well, look into casilla if he's available. i don't know how many holds he has, but he's a solid addition to any roto team for sure. the mariners are my team..that withstanding, both prospects should flourish (Balentin more power, Clement for average).
It's refreshing to see a Yahoo! writer actually contributing articles on a regular basis (that's not a shot at the others...okay, well maybe it is a little). Good job, Behrens! and not only because we share the first same name

Volsquez has been my best pickup pitching wise, and I picked Casey Kotchmann off waivers. Cueto is benched until further notice, but I won't drop him yet.
Now I'm just looking for steals and a better plan than put in J. Pierre whenever he starts.

The other team is low in average, so maybe I can Cabrera for Keppinger, albeit then I'll need a temporary 3B until A-Rod is off the DL. Maybe I could trade Aybar, but he's hitting for higher average than Cabrera and also has SB potential. I'm hesitant to trade another high average player because they also do well in the other categories.
Here's the Full Team:

C Geovany Soto (ChC - C)
