Roto Arcade - Fantasy

In this day and age of rampant wide receiver egocentrism, Brandon Marshall(notes) is a prime example of what can happen when a self-absorbent target is faced simultaneously with a new coaching regime, the loss of his Pro Bowl quarterback and contractual issues. To the perpetual whiner, the series of infuriating events is a Ghostbusters-crossing-the-streams type of situation.

In terms of fantasy, owners who sink a mid-round investment in the childish wideout have, as Dr. Egon Spengler would put it, a "very slim" chance of surviving the season.

But are the odds really that unfavorable?

Marshall's preseason suspension combined with his volatile personality and general incompliance has understandably turned many off in fantasyland. Unsurprisingly, his ADP has tumbled over the past two weeks from 33.85 to 59.92 (WR23), a decline of 43.7 percent. Right now, the game's ninth-best receiver from a year ago can be acquired around the same time as other question marks Antonio Bryant(notes), Knowshon Moreno(notes) and Willie Parker(notes).

Sign the Noise up.

Despite his fiery, ball-punting temper, Marshall could be one of the finest steals this drafting season. Last year, the league's most targeted wideout was a PPR monster, totaling 104 receptions, 1,265 yards and six scores. Yes, Kyle Orton(notes) is a major step down talent-wise from Jay Cutler(notes), but assuming his mangled finger doesn't prove game-threatening he will be more than serviceable in Josh McDaniels' pass-centric system -- positive news for No. 15. Duplicating '08's campaign isn't likely, but quality WR2 totals should be expected.

Though numerous trade whispers have floated about over the past few days, it appears no franchise is willing to pay the rumored second or third round pick price for the disgruntled receiver's services. Based on McDaniels' comments before last night's much anticipated clash with Cutler's Bears, the Broncos may not deal him even if presented the opportunity:

"Sure, that's our intent," McDaniels said regarding whether Marshall will continue to be a member of the team.  "That's absolutely the end game."

Drown yourself in Cristal, Eddie Royal(notes) backers.

Inevitably, to prevent flushing millions of dollars more down the toilet, the free-agent-to-be will eventually have a "come to Jesus" moment. Somewhat remorseful for his penalty-inducing actions, he may already have. Assuming his sinister side doesn't resurface, he should be available for the season opener in Cincinnati. However, his unfamiliarity with the offense may limit his fantasy points scoring opportunities initially.

Without question, fantasy owners, like real-life GMs, covet draft picks. But because Marshall can be acquired around the 4th-5th round turn, he's the ultimate high-risk, high-reward commodity. The majority of virtual managers are petrified of what the future may hold, but so were many any year with Terrell Owens(notes).

At this point, the profit potential is too good to ignore.

Fearless Forecast (15 games): 81 receptions, 1,027 yards, 7 touchdowns

What's more frightening: being attacked by the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man or rostering Brandon Marshall? In what round does the Denver wideout become a bargain? Are Eddie Royal's prospects of a banner '09 dimming? What's your Fearless Forecast? Discuss below.

You would think a team like San Diego would drop a 3rd rounder to line him up opposite Jackson. But Denver would be commiting season suicide if they did that I guess.

I have to agree. Marshall could be a steal in most drafts.

Lets see, Denver gets a pissant jerk of a coach, who goes and pisses off what may be Denver's top three offensive players - Cutler, Marshal and Scheffler. At some point all three have requested a trade. Now I'm not a football analyst but, if three of your top guys say they want to leave, shouldn't you be looking at this arrogant pissant of coach and maybe put him on notice? It isn't like the guy they have HAS ANY HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE ANYWHERE AT ANY LEVEL OR AGE GROUP!!!!! just saying..

I don't know about this one. By the looks of that practice last week, I wouldn't count on Marshall for absolutely anything, even if he is suited up for the season opener, It's very apparent that he wants out of Denver...coupled witht the fact that he has admitted that he knows next to nothing about the new offense, I'm glad i stayed away. However I'd be lying if I told you I'm comfortable with my 16-team WR core in Wes Welker, Roy Williams, and Robert Meachem (really hope all the hype about him is true this time around)
    Noise, any thoughts on Meachem?

Why would the Bears not give up a third? Hell maybe even a second. Cutler almost always seemed to be the one thing making Marshall keep somewhat cool tempered

I'm staying away from Marshall. He only had 6 TDs last year. You can find good wide receivers without the risk. I like Eddie Royal but Orton needs to be competent.

Marshall has battered wife syndrome, "where is he going to go" and the GM knows this (the husband). They know that Marshall can not afford a bad season for reasons of tradability, money, and reputation if he has any left. Marshall will start as usual, catch as usual, score as usual, and Royal will be the perfect short range target as usual. Marshall's numbers will suffer more because of Orton, which could be an upside for Royal, but if denver gets a viable running attack even Orton can throw his best version of the long ball and be successful.

I agree, McDaniels has Belichick's ego without his talent. He looks like a cornered little kid when he gets interviewed. That being said, Marshall will put up numbers this year. 70rec, 1000yds, 6 td's sounds about right.

Like #9 said, I'm much higher on him if he would somehow be granted that proverbial much-needed change of scenery.
However, WR23 off the board...wow. He is almost worth considering at that price, despite the Broncos problems, noodle-armed Orton, and B-Marsh's general douchebaggery.

I nabbed him at 56 in a recent 16-team draft. I'm targeting him in another. It's like people are willingly going out of their way to pass on him and Romo this year. Which I understand: the baggage/headaches and uncertainty. But where you're drafting him makes him an uber steal - one that will make you look brilliant come playoff time. And personally I think he tried to one-up Ochocinco, if not subconsciously. That was an impressive punt, man.

This has nothing specifically to do with Marshall, but...
How bad are the Broncos gonna be? Yikes. Is that a three-win team? Five? Broncos or Raiders, who ya got?

The Bears should pick him up. Without question. Devin Hester is not a #1 WR, even though they are paying him that kind of money.

Denver can kiss the baby, with or without Marshall. For a fantasy team, Marshall will be a steal in the 5th round...

If you're in a 17 roster spot team, you've got to take him in the 5th and stock plenty of WR depth. If you've only got 14 roster spots, I'd leave him on the shelf.

I acquired Marshall during my PPR keeper league draft. It only cost me two second round picks which, IMO, was a steal.

Marshall being on the field makes my 5th and 6th round pickups of Eddie Royal better (by drawing away double coverage) not worse. Orton has been out there actually developing a rapport with Royal, so he's the player to have. I've taken Moss in one draft (because the ceiling is absurdly high with Brady) but the other prima donna WRs (Owens, Marshall, Ochocinco) have all come off the board before I've gotten desperate enough. Broncos are a 5 win team, but Orton will put up numbers that look decent.

Im sorry but I HATE anyone on the broncos offence this year. The reasons are endless. First of, the obvious Cutler for Kyle Orton. Even in Orton's breakout year this is a downgrade when you compare the two. Also, that is just assuming Orton can even play up to the level he did last year. Everyone seems to forget the first couple years he had with the Bears when he absolutely stunk up the joint. It took him a couple years to learn the system, so its fair to assume it could be the same in Denver. Supporting all these facts is that Orton has looked downright brutal so far in the pre-season. He looks lost on the field. I dont like Eddie Royal to begin with I think he is way overvalued, but if Marshall doesn't suit up it's even worse. Defences have no other receiving option to worry about whatsoever. They can smother short routes because they know Orton can't go deep. I could keep going but i wont.

My league has already drafted, and the GM that drafted him is getting anxious as he also made the mistake of drafting Crabtree, so he is stretched thin at WR and looking to trade Marshall. I have Fitzgerald, Bowe, Mason, Coles and Heywood-Bay as a flier. With what's going on in KC (Cassell hurt), would you offer up Bowe for Marshall? I see more upswing with Marshall, and they were both initially ranked near each other. At worse, if he doesn't play or produce, I would have to start Coles over him.

I picked up Marshall with the 9th pick in the 7th round. Taking a chance, but I could not pass it up. Think about it. He wants out of Denver and it's all about money. He may be inmature, but he understands well enough that his value has to be re-established. I think this is enough merit for him to conform to the demands of the team and re-establish his value on the team so he can get the contract HE feels he deserves. He has absolutely no leverage and is clearly hurting his trade value. The only way to fix it is through performance on the field. Look for B. Marshall to get back to last years form around week 3I am betting this guy was a steal in the 7th round for me!
