We had two trades in the NBA today, both involving the Knicks and both dealing in the futures market. The Knicks are clearing cap for 2010, the Clippers are thinking only of the immediate future, and the Warriors are still wondering what the future holds.
The specifics for trade 1:
The Golden State Warriors traded disgruntled forward Al Harrington to the Knicks for guard Jamal Crawford on Friday in a swap that addresses both the Warriors’ injury problems and New York’s salary cap concerns.
And for trade 2:
The New York Knicks have agreed in principle to send power forward Zach Randolph to the Los Angeles Clippers, two league sources said Friday afternoon. The Clippers would send Tim Thomas and Cuttino Mobley to the Knicks for Randolph and guard Mardy Collins.
• This is how the Knicks' depth chart shakes out at this point:
PG: Chris Duhon, Anthony Roberson,
Stephon Marbury
SG: Cuttino Mobley, Nate Robinson
SF: Wilson Chandler, Quentin Richardson, Danilo Gallinari
PF: Al Harrington, Tim Thomas, Jared Jeffries
C: David Lee, Malik Rose,Eddy Curry,Jerome James
Not exactly a murderer's row, but Al Harrington and David Lee once again deserve to be universally rostered, and Wilson Chandler and Nate Robinson should be right there with them. Cuttino Mobley gets a bit more interesting with the Knicks, but I'm not exactly expecting a swan song. Tim Thomas is relevant if your league is more than 225 players deep, as is Jared Jeffries if he's actually at full capacity when he returns from a broken leg. And be sure to start any player on your roster when they play the Knicks... for at least the next two years.
•Now let's play Don Nelson for a minute:
PG: Jamal Crawford, C.J. Watson, Marcus Williams, Monta Ellis
SG: Kelenna Azubuike, Anthony Morrow, Marco Belinelli
SF: Stephen Jackson
PF: Corey Maggette, Brandan Wright, Anthony Randolph, Rob Kurz
C: Andris Biedrins, Ronny Turiaf
Crawford can shoot at will with the Warriors, just like in NY, and his overall fantasy impact (current per-game rank of 68) doesn't figure to change much. Captain Jackson and Maggette are still going to get theirs, and Biedrins - your league leader in offensive boards - won't miss a beat in terms of put-back attempts. Buike figures to remain in the starting five, with Morrow mopping up the minutes at both guard spots - Morrow could be a solid source of threes in that capacity, so you don't necessarily need to bail on him immediately. And then there's the question of what happens when Ellis returns, but you have to assume Crawford would move to SG at that point, with Buike moving to the bench. When and if Ellis can return to form is a completely different issue...
• Can't wait to see how Mike Dunleavy's dad tries to make this work:
PG: Baron Davis, Mike Taylor, Jason Hart, Mardy Collins
SG: Eric Gordon, Ricky Davis
SF: Al Thornton
PF: Marcus Camby, Zach Randolph, Steve Novak
C: Chris Kaman, Brian Skinner, Paul Davis, DeAndre Jordan
All we can do is wonder how the minutes shake out for Kaman/Camby/Randolph, but what we know for sure is that Randolph's fantasy impact (current pre-game rank of 31) is going to take a serious hit. In general, assume a negative overall affect on those three players, and keep an eye out for Dunleavy quotes and on the box scores. Maybe they can flip Camby in another trade, who they got for free anyway? The trade should clear the way for Gordon to join the starting five, but plan on a platoon scenario with R.Davis in the immediate future. Both Gordon and R.Davis gain some fantasy relevance, but neither is going to provide much more than low-efficiency, average-ish offense. Neither B.Davis nor Thornton figure to be affected much by the deal.
I look forward to your comments, as always. Have a look here if you are interested in how the team's salaries break down now and, more importantly, in 2010.

Semi-perplexing move for Golden State - unless they can move surplus wingmen for some quality frontcourt depth. Offset excessive contracts of Ellis, Maggette & Crawford.
Clippers now have an interesting frontcourt - Randolph is a more natural PF than Camby, so it would be interesting to see if they trade either Camby or Kaman, or if not - who comes off the bench. They may be dreaming thinking that Randolph will aquiese to coming off the bench - especially with the start he's made this season. How will Dunleavy's more regimented/micro-managed system meld with all these strong personalities?
