As you've no doubt heard, Cedric Benson was released by the Bears just one infraction short of the operating-a-vehicle-while-intoxicated Triple Crown.

He did the boat in Maythe car in June, and we can assume that he's arranged to drunkenly pilot a small aircraft -- possibly a dirigible, or an ultralight -- in early July.

Good riddance. Many of us were entirely finished with Benson last year in Week 8, before the season-ending injury. He was numbingly ineffective in '07, and as predictable as a Lenny Kravitz lyric. Benson's teammates did not exactly have his back, either. There are no legitimate reasons for optimism about his NFL future.

Benson's release won't radically alter many preseason draft boards, except where Matt Forte is concerned. The Chicago rookie rushed for 2,127 yards, 23 TDs, and 5.9 yards-per-carry at Tulane last season. Forte also demonstrated an ability break the occasional tackle (unlike Benson), run outside successfully (unlike Benson), and catch a few passes (unlike Benson, who batted them to the ground as if they'd been sent to hurt him).

These are the biggest knocks on Forte, per our colleagues at Rivals:

Lacks top speed. Suffered a severe knee injury in 2006. He runs in a straight-up style that gives defenders a shot to get into his body.

If you check out the highlight video on Forte's page at Rivals, you'll notice the upright style. You'll also see at least one instance where he's caught from behind on a play where you'd expect an elite runner to score.

Of course, you'll also see some explosion and elusiveness. Benson displayed none of that last season. Instead, he appeared to simply run to contact, then submit to the will of tacklers.

In the next batch of running back rankings, I'll have Forte at least as high as Funston and Evans have him currently (22). Benson's release makes the Kevin Smith-or-Matt Forte discussion much more interesting. In fact, it puts him in the mix with McFadden, Mendenhall and Stewart.

There's one caveat, however. After last season's various failures, Chicago appears committed to making unproven players earn their starting jobs this year. Or they've at least committed to the illusion of competition. Don't be at all surprised if some veteran running back is added to provide token pressure.

Still, the Bears' coaches have gushed about their second round pick:

"I love Matt Forte," Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner said Sunday during a break at the Bears Expo. "He will definitely be an every-down back. He's got the size, he's got the hands. He's smooth as an athlete, very smooth ... After nine practices, I'm not afraid to call anything in the offense with him."

Coaches aren't to be trusted when they're speaking on the record, obviously, but those statements certainly shouldn't dissuade you from targeting Forte in Round Five or Six. During the post-Draft mock, way back when Cedric hadn't yet run afoul of Austin law enforcement, there were commenters begging us to take him in Round Four Three.

Forte will soon face an entirely new level of competition, of course. The NFC North is not Tulane. Until we see him escape, say, EJ Henderson or Nick Barnett, then we haven't really seen anything.

I was begging Buser to take Forte in round THREE. Forte is going to be an absolute beast.
Kevin Smith will be good, too. Not as good as Forte, but he will be good.
And as for Benson's DUI trifecta, I would expect a motorcycle to be #3 in July :)

I think Forte is going to have a good rookie season. Maybe 1100 yards rushing and 6 TD.

1250 yds, 8 TD. Orton is going to take pressure off him with a studly new receiving toy - Earl Bennett - who I'm watching in every league I play this year.

Yeah, I'll let someone else have him. Too many other options to mess around with Bears RBs at this point. The word "cursed" comes to mind when I think of Da Bears. I can do better, I think. NEXT!

I'm thinking 10 men in the box every down. Let the receivers run free... whoever the Bears have at QB still won't be able to complete the pass. Personally, I'm allergic to "upright running styles." Owning Chris Brown a couple of years ago gave me a terrible case of FredTaylor-itis.
Forte's a rookie with upside, which is exciting, but not in as good a situation as, say, Marshawn Lynch last year. In my keeper league, Lynch went in round 5 last season, and I certainly wouldn't take Forte before that.

Kobai, I would guess that Lynch went much earlier than Round 5 in virtually all other keeper leagues. That had to be the first year of the league, yeah?
I'm in a 16-team keeper where we can only keep up to three guys, and only for a max of three years. Lynch was the 10th pick overall.

Curious, what made Lynch's situation last year any better than Forte's this year?

Man, you guys are killing me. I really wish you would get fired. How am I supposed to get all the "sleepers" I want in my leagues with you punks always writing an entire FRONT PAGE article about them? I know it's no big secret about these kind of players, bu articles like these turn players like this into 3rd rounders, rather than 5th or 6th rounders! I hate it, and hope you die of AIDS in Africa.

I'll pass on Forte that early. I'd rather take QB or a WR on an offense that will actually score points.

There's no way that any Bears RB deserves to be in the top-20 right now, mostly because it's too easy to put 10 guys in the box when you're facing the legendary Grossman-to-Booker combo. Factor in the platoon situation, and it's pretty easy for me to steer well clear of Forte (unless he drops to, I don't know, the 12th round). What a waste of time.

I will take the bears defense over Lee Evans anytime...Forte will run the ball because that is the offense the bears like they like to grind it out and Forte and all the backs will get lots of carries

it will be interesting to see how the bears choose to utilize both forte and peterson, I could see peterson stealing a few carries here and there. Its all about the Vikes this year though! Super Bowl champs!

Everybody is writing off Adrian Peterson for the Bears but he was a great college RB who was fast and physical. He also did not do that bad when given opportunities last season. I believe the first AP will start and be effective...of course if the rest of the offense sucks with Grossman and Orton as QBs, who are at best average, then not very many RB will be successful!

Morons! Look at the rest of the Bears offensive draft picks in the past couple of years. What have they done? Absolutely nothing. Seriously, get a grip.
