Mets' closer Billy Wagner is headed to the DL with a strained left forearm.

This optimistic spin arrives via the team's website:

Minaya said the MRI results came as good news because the injury was not more serious, and he said he is hopeful that Wagner's stint on the DL will only last 15 days.

"It was nothing major," Minaya said. "Structurally, all things were great."

Yeah, they sound great. Last month it was the left shoulder, now it's the left forearm. The left elbow is completely surrounded by injured things.

According to MLB.com, Aaron Heilman should get "the majority of save opportunities." The Daily News agrees:

Jerry Manuel said he'll employ a bullpen by committee, with Aaron Heilman atop the pecking order because he gets lefties and righties out.

Heilman is 1-6 with a 5.25 ERA and 1.45 WHIP. He's also allowed runs in three of his last four appearances, so his reign as closer could be brief.

Recent call-up Eddie Kunz clearly has a chance to get in the closing mix. The 22-year-old had 27 saves at Double-A Binghamton, with a 2.79 ERA and 43 Ks in 48 innings. He's also huge (6-5, 265), and possesses "a mid-to-high 90s fastball."
