Damian Lillard calls out Nuggets radio announcer for joke about kicking injured teammate Jusuf Nurkic

The animosity of a combative second-round Denver Nuggets-Portland Trail Blazers series is beginning to spill into press row.

In the final minutes of the Blazers’ Game 6 win, the team’s two benches began engaging in some less-than-friendly discourse. Among the participants was injured Blazers center Jusuf Nurkic, who is out for the year after a gruesome leg injury and has since become a visible presence around the Blazers’ bench.

At that point, the Altitude Sports’ radio announcers began commenting on the big man.

"Nurkic is acting tough guy," analyst Scott Hastings said.

“Well, he always does that,” play-by-play man Jason Kosmicki replied.

"That’s true. Kick him in the shin." Hastings said, to which Kosmicki laughed in response.

The crack about kicking a player with an injured leg in the shin drew the ire of at least one Blazers player: star Damian Lillard.

Nurkic himself also seemed to have some thoughts on the joke.

It’s not hard to see why Hastings’ comment was taken in poor taste. Even going beyond the optics and Nurkic’s history as a former Nuggets player, it’s also worth pondering how frustrated the Blazers might feel when they see their opponent’s radio crew mock a player whose presence likely would have created a completely different series.

However it all plays out, Game 7 is scheduled for Sunday and figures to be a fun one.
