Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said on Tuesday a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to uphold a ban on Russia's participation in next month's Rio Paralympics was "cynical" and a blow to all disabled people. Earlier on Tuesday Russia lost an appeal against its ban from the Paralympics because of a state-sponsored doping program. "The story with Russian doping is a thick and very disgusting cocktail with 80 percent politics and 20 percent doping proper", Medvedev said on his Facebook page.
Four-time Olympic champion Laura Trott has expressed annoyance over the questions posed by rivals about British cyclists' extraordinary performances at the Rio Games. Trott won two gold medals and her fiance Jason Kenny claimed three golds as Team GB stormed to the top of the cycling medals table with six goals and 12 in total. Britain won nine medals at this year's World Championships in London, having won only three silver medals at last year's event in Paris, prompting rival cyclists to question their improvement.
Rookie rider Lilian Calmejane of France won the fourth stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Tuesday, while Colombian Darwin Atapuma took the overall lead of the grand tour. Calmejane broke away from a large escape group before the final climb of the 163.5-kilometer (101.5-mile) route from Betanzos to the San Andres de Teixido summit with its dramatic views of the Atlantic Ocean. "It's incredible," Calmejane said.
