Fire that started in vacant Braddock house spread to nearby home, officials say

Crews battled a fire along May Way in Braddock Thursday morning.

Rivers Edge fire officials said the house the fire started in was vacant and spread next door, causing smoke and water damage.

Public Information Officer Pat Green said when fire spreads to another building, more backup is needed to prevent the flames from spreading even further, prompting a three-alarm response.

Green said that the houses are in close proximity to each other, making it easy for the fire to spread quickly.

“I heard ‘Boom! Boom! Boom!’ I’m thinking it was the police,” said William Jones, who lives in one of the houses that caught fire. “I jump up, and my neighbor’s son is like, ‘The house back there is on fire. You need to get out!’”

The fire was reported at around 6:30 a.m. Officials said no one was injured.

“That’s all I could think…wow. I hope that everybody’s OK,” said neighbor Vanessa Caldwell. “The neighbor’s house that was on fire, to see the defeat of him trying to get his house together…it’s a lot. We’re a really big community.”

The Allegheny County Fire Marshal hasn’t said what caused the fire but is continuing to investigate. Neighbors told Channel 11 that waking up to something like this hits too close to home.

“I know I have to call my insurance agent today to evaluate how much is my renter’s insurance and maybe there are things I can kind of do, check my wiring a little bit more…just being aware,” Caldwell said.
