For the better part of three quarters, Michigan was every bit as good as No. 3 Maryland. Then, after gaining momentum from a buzzer-beating shot, the Terrapins showed why they're the only unbeaten team in Big Ten play. Brionna Jones had 25 points and 10 rebounds, and Maryland (18-1, 6-0) pulled away in the fourth quarter to secure an 83-70 victory Thursday night.
Mississippi coach Matt Insell took a bit of comfort in his team's latest loss to No. 5 South Carolina - that he'll never have to face senior powerhouse Alaina Coates again. Coates had 15 points and 15 rebounds - her 54th career double-double and fifth in as many games against the Rebels - to lead the Gamecocks to a 65-46 victory Thursday night. Insell said he told Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley he is glad Coates' college career will soon be over.
Alexis Jones and second-ranked Baylor can take some blows and keep on winning. Jones had 16 points while playing with a swollen black right eye and the Lady Bears withstood a feisty effort by 24th-ranked West Virginia to win 79-73 Saturday. Baylor (19-1, 8-0 Big 12) has won 54 consecutive games at home since a 71-69 loss to the Mountaineers on March 2, 2014.
