Blue Bombers head coach Mike Kelly in hot water again for comments

WINNIPEG - Winnipeg Blue Bombers rookie head coach Mike Kelly has landed in hot water again, just days before his team's biggest game of the season.

The CFL fined Kelly $2,000 on Monday for inappropriate comments he made to Winnipeg radio broadcasters after the team's 48-13 loss to the Montreal Alouettes on Sunday. It came after the Bombers first issued an apology by Kelly for the incident.

Kelly took offence to speculation by football analyst Mitch Zalnasky that maybe the Bombers weren't focused on the Als because they were thinking ahead to Sunday's home game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, which will determine if the Bombers make the playoffs.

Kelly angrily told Zalnasky and veteran play-by-play man Bob Irving that his players were focused on the Als and it was "just media bullshit talking about anything else." He then made a couple more comments and hung up.

In his regular Monday meeting with the media - which was hours before the CFL's announcement - Kelly brusquely addressed the apology.

"This is how we're handling this," Kelly began. "I'm going to make a statement about comments after the game and then we're going to talk about Hamilton.

"You ask me about anything else about the comments after the game and we're done. OK? Everybody understand? All right.

"Now, I apologize if people were offended by the language that I used. I will defend my players like a lion protecting its pride.

"People (Zalnasky) that don't show up to practice that want to make comments about the efforts that are made by our football team will not be tolerated or accepted. It's that easy. OK?"

The squad played hard against Montreal but "we didn't get it done."

"So, if you're offended, I'm sorry, I apologize, but what I promise you is that our guys are going to go out there this week against Hamilton and we are going to play to the utmost of our abilities and we will prepare this week like no other," Kelly said.

"So that's the end of that. Let's talk about Hamilton because we've got a big game coming up."

If the Bombers (7-10) defeat the Ticats (8-9) they will clinch second spot in the East Division by virtue of winning the season series. But a loss would knock Winnipeg out of the playoffs because they have fewer points than the fourth-place team in the West Division, which would then be the No. 3 seed in the Eastern conference.

Edmonton and B.C. are tied for third in the West, each with 8-9 records. They square off Friday night at B.C. Place.

However, Hamilton could still lose to Winnipeg and be the East Division's third playoff seed if the Eskimos and Lions don't play to a tie.

Kelly's latest apology was just one of many controversies that have swirled around the club since he was hired last December after Doug Berry was fired following an 8-10 season.

In January, Kelly announced John Murphy would replace Brendan Taman as the team's player-personnel director and said Murphy was faced with few scouting reports.

"A good pro personnel director is going to write upwards of 1,200 reports in a season. We don't have anything like that at the Bombers. Everything was done on napkins, I guess," Kelly said at the time.

His insult to Taman caused a backlash and Kelly issued a statement with an apology on the team's website.

At April's annual fan forum, Kelly made another gaffe when he repeated a fan's derogatory comment.

The fan called Saskatchewan "the crotch of Canada." The comment drew laughs, including from Bombers president Lyle Bauer.

Later in the forum, Kelly used the reference in talking about trades he'd made with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The quip caused an uproar in Saskatchewan and Bauer issued an apology on Kelly's behalf.

Before travelling to a July game in Hamilton, a scout affiliated with the Bombers was caught taking notes during a Ticats' practice.

The Bombers had director of football operations Ross Hodgkinson comment about it. He said the scout's actions weren't directed by the team and apologized.

When Kelly met the media for his daily scrum, he refused to talk about it, saying it was a "non-issue, been handled internally, I'm not talking about it." When reporters kept asking him about it, he walked away.

Kelly also stopped taking callers on his weekly radio show because some were making personal attacks on him.

One Winnipeg teenager even started a Fire Mike Kelly Facebook group after the team's losses mounted in September.

The Bombers are in the midst of the league's longest Grey Cup drought. Their last championship was in 1990.

Only God can wipe out sickness, hunger, hatred, death, gay lifestyles, sexual perversion etc. So read the Bible and learn how God gave his son Jesus as a sacrifice for many so that we might have a chance at life immortality in a paradise world. Everyone will be equal and no more lies and greed. Do you want to be there? Ask God and Jesus into your life and follow the 10 Commandments. Amen

"(A) loss would knock Winnipeg out of the playoffs because they have fewer points than the fourth-place team in the West Division, which would then be the No. 3 seed in the Eastern conference." Ohhhhh, I see what you mean. STANDINGS points are the points being referred to, as in two for a win and one for a tie, not each team's aggregate points scored in their 18 games. I forgot, the CFL uses standings points rather than the NFL's won-lost-tied percentage. D'oh!

    Okay. That's fine.

So if BC and Edmonton tie Friday night, they both qualify, right? Hmmmm. That'll certain look suspicious.

So folks this is the way it's gonna be this week end: Mr. Kelly is going try to coach his team, they will loose badly gain. Then someone from the media will ask him for a simple comment on the loss, and he will blow his stack and foul language will spew from his mouth, once again. Does anyone out there think differently?????

Mrspeedreader, I believe what you are proposing for the crossover is how it already is. The Lions or Eskimos cannot crossover if their record is equal in points to the 3rd place team in the East.

I don't like the way the Crossover works.

The idea is that a better fourth place team shouldn't miss out of the playoffs just because they are in the wrong division. I agree with that. But the keys should be that they are BETTER, not merely equal.

If the fourth place team in the West has a won-lost record that is merely the same as the third place team in the East,t then the default rule should apply ... i.e., top three teams from each division qualify. The fourth place team from the West should only qualify for the Eastern playoffs if they are better.

Otherwise, the hell with it ... get rid of the divisions.

Kelly is an embarrassment to the Winnipeg Football Club and the City of Winnipeg. He should focus on looking for a job selling pencils, he may or may not be good at that.
