Cal baseball signee Nick Halamandaris, the school career record holder at Monterey (Calif.) Robert Lewis Stevenson, met with head coach David Esquer on Wednesday to discuss whether he'll come to Berkeley as planned or take the Seattle Mariners up on their eighth-round draft selection of the big power-hitting first baseman.
Halamandaris has yet to hear from the Mariners as of now, and him coming to Berkeley will likely be contingent upon his signing bonus. Since he was taken before the 10th round, the signing bonus is not restricted to $100k or lower, so if he runs into some big money, it might be tough to turn down.
If he does come and play for the Bears, the 6-foot-2, 220-pounder would likely be the heir-apparent to Devon Rodriguez at first base.
