In another move to shake up his coaching staff, California basketball head coach Mike Montgomery has promoted Travis DeCuire -- who has served as an assistant men's basketball coach for the Golden Bears the past four seasons -- to associate head coach.

"Travis has played a vital role in our team's success both as a coach on the court and in recruiting in our four years here at Cal," Montgomery said. "He is an excellent coach who impacts all facets of our program, warranting this promotion. Travis continues to expand his responsibilities as a coach and has distinguished himself as one of the top mentors in the game. This appointment is well deserved and will enhance the development of our student-athletes."

A part of Montgomery's coaching staff since his arrival in Berkeley prior to the 2008-09 season, DeCuire has helped guide the Bears to 88 victories and a Pac-12 title over the past four seasons. A top-flight recruiter, DeCuire has also helped develop several all-conference standouts, including the 2010 Pac-10 Player of the Year Jerome Randle, the 2011 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Allen Crabbe, and the 2012 Pac-12 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year Jorge Gutierrez. The Bears have reached the postseason all four years with DeCuire on staff.

"I am extremely grateful to Coach Montgomery and Sandy Barbour for their confidence in me," DeCuire said. "We have an amazing staff and the best support system in college basketball. Together with the help of the Cal community, we will continue our pursuit of a championship on the court and the ultimate success of our student-athletes off of it. The opportunity to grow both as a coach and a mentor wouldn't be possible without the hard work and dedication of all the student-athletes who I've had the great pleasure of working with in my four years at Berkeley."

DeCuire arrived at Cal along with Montgomery in the spring of 2008, following five years as an assistant coach at Old Dominion, where he helped lead the Monarchs to a 117-53 combined record and four postseason berths in his final four seasons with the program.

He previously served as a head coach at Green River Community College in Seattle and at Sammamish High School in Bellevue.

DeCuire graduated Montana in 1994 with a degree in business marketing, and was a standout point guard for the Grizzlies from 1991-94. He was a two-time Most Valuable Player and All-Big Sky Conference honoree. He began his coaching career as a player-coach for the Sutherland Basketball Club in Sutherland, Australia, in 1994-95.

DeCuire's new appointment completes Montgomery's staff, along with Assistant Athletic Director for Basketball Development Jay John, and assistant coaches John Montgomery and Gregg Gottlieb, for the 2012-13 season.
