2010 Ring fan polls: Fighter of the Year
RingTV.com, in association with Yahoo! Sports, is offering boxing fans the opportunity to vote for their favorites from 2010 and determine a winner in eight categories.
One category will appear each day on Yahoo! Sports and the result will be announced the following day at http://www.ringtv.com/.
Note: These are not the official Ring awards. Those will be announced in the magazine itself.
The following are the candidates for Fighter of the Year.
Sergio Martinez: The Argentine made a big statement when he beat Kelly Pavlik to win the middleweight championship. He made himself a superstar with his stunning second-round KO of Paul Williams.
Giovani Segura: The aggressive U.S.-based Mexican took the 108-pound title from talented longtime champion Ivan Calderon, one of four victories – and four knockouts – in a perfect 2010.
Juan Manuel Lopez: One of the sport’s rising stars knocked out three respected opponents – Steven Luevano, Bernabe Concepcion and Rafael Marquez – in spectacular fashion. Not a bad 2010.
Manny Pacquiao: The Filipino icon didn’t face the stiffest competition in 2010, a reluctant Joshua Clottey and a slow Antonio Margarito. However, once again, he dazzled his growing legion of fans.
Fernando Montiel: The exciting Mexican stopped all four of his opponents in four rounds or fewer, including then-bantamweight titleholder Hozumi Hasegawa in Japan. He couldn’t have done much better.
