Mijares unifies super flyweight title
GOMEZ PALACIO, Mexico (Ticker) - Mexico’s Cristian Mijares earned a split-decision victory over Venezuela’s Alexander Munoz on Saturday night to claim the WBA super flyweight championship.
Mijares (35-3-2, 14 knockouts), who is also the WBC champion, received scores of 115-111 and 115-112 from a pair of judges to win the 12-round bout by decision. A third judge saw the fight 115-113 in favor of Munoz (32-3, 27 knockouts).
The first super flyweight unification title bout in nearly a decade headlined the “Noche de Campeones” pay-per-view event from the Auditorio Centenario.
The southpaw Mijares has successfully defended his WBC super flyweight title since capturing belt from Katsushige Kawashima in Yokohama, Japan on September 18, 2006.
Munoz was a two-time WBA super flyweight champion who originally won his WBA title belt in 2002 via an eighth-round knockout of Celes Kobayasho.
