Martinez is Pavlik’s replacement against Williams

  • Print

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP)—Paul Williams finally has found an opponent for his next bout, choosing Sergio Martinez to replace injured Kelly Pavlik.

Heavyweight Chris Arreola also will fight on the card at the Boardwalk Hall Ballroom in Atlantic City on Dec. 5.

Williams spent the fall preparing for a showdown with Pavlik, but the middleweight champ backed out of two dates due to an infection in his left hand. The bout finally was canceled last month.

Williams (37-1, 27 KOs) is a two-time welterweight champion who can fight in several weight classes. He hasn’t been in the ring since his one-sided victory over Winky Wright last April.

Martinez (44-1-2, 24 KOs) is the WBC 154-pound champion, but will move up to 160 pounds to face Williams.

Should be a really good match up. Martinez is quick enough to disrupt Williams, now all of the nut huggers, I did not say faster than Williams but quick enough to cause some problems. Secondly he is a south paw so we will see how he reacts to someone bigger than Quintana. Good fight the only loss on Martinez record is to Antonio Margarito who is not suspect of having loaded gloves.

advmason1,my friend, Lets really be honest here for a second (and engage in a little friendly debate :-) lol) . The ONLY advantage that Pavlik has over Williams is power. Williams trumps him in speed, movement, agility, boxing ability AND punch combinations. Even major sports betting lines had Williams as the strong favorite. And honestly, Kelly Pavlik is more predictable than a soap opera! Pavlik would have one hell of a time trying to outbox Williams. Pavlik would throw a jab and Williams would have thrown 5 punches. Williams has more combos than Burger King.

Could Pavlik have KO'ed Williams? Sure he could have; It wouldnt shock me if he did, and really thats the only way he could have won. Williams more than likely sparred against power punchers in training camp. Im sure they addressed the power "problem" by sparring against fighters with power. Im not really sure that i buy the "Pavlik's power would be the factor" argument. But anything's possible..

I also heard about the Williams camp turning down Pavlik. Ironically, team Pavlik previously turned down the Williams camp as well.. IMO, It was nothing more than a $$$$ dispute. The same thing is happening with Berto/Mosely; Berto bid high, Mosely bid low, they meet in the middle. Williams-Pavlik seems to have had the same implications..

Believe it or not, I actually really like Pavlik as a fighter. But styles make fights. Williams' style is just too difficult for the vast mnajority of fighters to beat. I really hope they fight sometime in 2010 tho..

This is a good fight for Martinez. A good showing for him could get him some other big fights, win or lose. He's a good boxer but probably wont ever be a fan favorite with how he fights. It will take Williams a bit to figure him out, but in the end I think he does and pulls a decision victory. But it's a different kinda fight than it would have been with Pavlik. Knockout fighter to skill fighter now.

check out, "boxrec.com" .you can see any boxer, by ranking, records, who they fought, the outcome, what round it ended,etc... sergio martinez, fought nobody ! to say he would be a tougher fight for williams than pavlik , is a joke.

mr. gametight, stick to your video games! paul williams is a great fighter to watch, never stops punching, can hit you from any angle, good speed,etc.... he's better off w/martinez, he knows it, and his camp knows it. paul suprised me w/his dominence of winky wright, and now has my respect. but he's no match 4 pavlik! i'm sue he'd look good in the fight, but he would get hit, and i guarentee he hasn't been hit as hard as pavlik can hit. paul's camp took the pav fight, 4 the big payday, that is all. thats why pauls camp turned down a pav fight a couple years ago.i hope paul wins the fight w/martinez. then maybe we'll see a pav/williams fight next year. talk 2 you then.

The guy that beat Williams got beat up in 2 rounds by Williams in the rematch. Paul Williams has been avoided because of his style, speed and Heighth which makes him almost unstoppable in this point of his career. I like this Martinez guy because he has good skills and a remarkable chin. This will be a tougher fight for Williams than Pavlick would because of Martinez has better hand speed and can fight inside. If Martinez can adjust to the weight then it will be a good fight but if he doesn't ............ Williams will put on qnother display of dominance!

    Williams by decision

neither of these guys are that good, the quintana fight was no damn fluke he out boxed the puncher and made him look bad that was supposed to be a stepping stone for williams instead he was perfectly outboxed, ive been diapointed with martinez but well see he seems to be getting better

williams is not unbeatable, he has been outboxed and martinez is very sneaky so dont be to surprised if martinez catches an overconfident williams being over aggresive, jusy maybe

why not have williams fight for martinez's 154belt? williams can make that weight, take that belt, still fight at middleweight, and make some money. this guy could possibley dominate like sugar ray robinson, IF the other fighters face him.

no disrespect to mosely, mayweather, manny, cotto, or palik, but pc is the only one who can beat EVERYONE i listed. take your pick.

I'd hardly regard Martinez as dangerous.....He's just another overrated european style (dirty) fighter.
Did you see the Cintron fight? I predict Williams KO Martinez in round 5.
And I think Williams is lucky to be fighting Martinez rather than a healthy Kelly Pavlik.

Nope, not likely a great fight but who else were they going to get to fight Williams? He can't get top welter and middleweights normally, he definitely wouldn't get one on short notice.

Martinez's whole ring record is suspect. Even as late as 2007 he was fighting men with losing records in 6 round matches. The only note worthy fighter he has ever fought besides cintron was Margarito who knocked him out. Not a good replacement....just a payday for both fighters

Paul Williams will hunt Martinez down and they will stop the fight late around the 10th round! Everyone keeps bringing up the quintana fight, he didn't slip up that fight, quintana beat him. But the mark of a real champion is what he has done after, he is a way better fighter that sits on his punches and put them together well. He also knows how to start and finish a fight better. If you watch the first two rounds of all his fights since the quintana lost, you will notice how he softens up his opponents outside by jabbing, straight left and then right hook and out of distance. After he softens them up, then he moves inside to wear them down. This is exactly how he will beat Martinez!

    C'mon Joe
You really think "The Hitman" had a shaky chin? He didn't get ko'ed legitimately until the Hagler fight at middleweight and that was after he broke his hand in the fight. His other ko's/tko's were when he was older and past his prime. Everybody has a glass jaw when they get old.

Sorry Gabriel...Martinez is no comparisson to Pavlik, too small and not much punching power. He may have better lateral movement than Pavlik but Williams chin will not be tested. Pavlik is a full fledged middleweight, Martinez is not. Martinez was KO'd by disgraced welterweight Antonio Margarito and will get KO'd by Williams by round 7. Hopkins showed Pavliks flaw of not being able to cut off the ring, hopefully he has improved that aspect of his game as that would be the only way Williams would survive against Pavlik running and jabbing. I would like to see Williams fight a few more natural middleweights though as I dont think his chin has been tested. He reminds me of my favorite fighter Tommy Hearns...great skills, awesome power...shaky chin.

I think that Martinez is a much more dangerous opponent for Williams than Pavlik, but I think that Williams will win. He seems to be getting more and more comfortable in the ring. He made Winky Wright, a defensive master, look average when they fought. The Quintana fight was a fluke, but I will agree that Williams needs to be prepared to fight and not be over confident. He was definitely caught unprepared for Quintana and admitted as much. He avenged the loss emphatically though. I see a unanimous points decision for Williams.

Martinez has looked very good in his past couple of fights. He has fast hands. Martinez is a dangerous replacement. I'm looking for a Williams victory on points, but Martinez might surprise the Punisher.

Im the biggest Paul WIlliams fan in America, but this is a WAAAAAAAAAAY more dangerous fight for Williams than Pavlik..

Kelly Pavlik, although a good fighter, is EXTREMELY limited. He is slow, flat footed, one dimensional and EVERYTHING is predicated off of his left jab. If you watch a Pavlik fight, you can actually predict what he will throw: Left jab, left jab, straight right. left jab left jab right hook. Watching Pavlik fight is like playing Fight Night Round 4 on my PS3 (and ironically, Pavlik fights the SAME DAMN WAY on the game too lol). Jonestly, Pavlik really had no chance in hell of beating Williams. Williams would have run thru Pavlik like bad chinese food (unless Pavlik got lucky and KO'ed Williams).

Martinez, on the other hand, is a totally different fight. He is fast, a great boxer, good power, and has great combinations, just like Williams. Think of him as a shorter, Latino Paul Williams lol.. And before people say that "Williams has the advantage in weight", both fighters normally hydrate on fight nite up to about 165-168. If the Williams -Pavlik fight were to happen, Williams more than likely would have come in on the "heavy side", about 167 on fight nite. Pavlik would have probably clocked in around 170+.

Anway, I still pick Williams by close decision, but dont be suprised if Martinez pulls out a win. Martinez is a 10x better fighter than Quintana. If he utilizes the left hook on Williams, it may spell trouble for P-Will..

Hopefully Paul will be prepared and the layoff doesn't hurt him. He can't afford another slip like the Quintana fight. Not now when he's on the brink of being a big star.
