Martinez is Pavlik’s replacement against Williams
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP)—Paul Williams finally has found an opponent for his next bout, choosing Sergio Martinez to replace injured Kelly Pavlik.
Heavyweight Chris Arreola also will fight on the card at the Boardwalk Hall Ballroom in Atlantic City on Dec. 5.
Williams spent the fall preparing for a showdown with Pavlik, but the middleweight champ backed out of two dates due to an infection in his left hand. The bout finally was canceled last month.
Williams (37-1, 27 KOs) is a two-time welterweight champion who can fight in several weight classes. He hasn’t been in the ring since his one-sided victory over Winky Wright last April.
Martinez (44-1-2, 24 KOs) is the WBC 154-pound champion, but will move up to 160 pounds to face Williams.

Could Pavlik have KO'ed Williams? Sure he could have; It wouldnt shock me if he did, and really thats the only way he could have won. Williams more than likely sparred against power punchers in training camp. Im sure they addressed the power "problem" by sparring against fighters with power. Im not really sure that i buy the "Pavlik's power would be the factor" argument. But anything's possible..
I also heard about the Williams camp turning down Pavlik. Ironically, team Pavlik previously turned down the Williams camp as well.. IMO, It was nothing more than a $$$$ dispute. The same thing is happening with Berto/Mosely; Berto bid high, Mosely bid low, they meet in the middle. Williams-Pavlik seems to have had the same implications..
Believe it or not, I actually really like Pavlik as a fighter. But styles make fights. Williams' style is just too difficult for the vast mnajority of fighters to beat. I really hope they fight sometime in 2010 tho..

Did you see the Cintron fight? I predict Williams KO Martinez in round 5.
And I think Williams is lucky to be fighting Martinez rather than a healthy Kelly Pavlik.

You really think "The Hitman" had a shaky chin? He didn't get ko'ed legitimately until the Hagler fight at middleweight and that was after he broke his hand in the fight. His other ko's/tko's were when he was older and past his prime. Everybody has a glass jaw when they get old.

Kelly Pavlik, although a good fighter, is EXTREMELY limited. He is slow, flat footed, one dimensional and EVERYTHING is predicated off of his left jab. If you watch a Pavlik fight, you can actually predict what he will throw: Left jab, left jab, straight right. left jab left jab right hook. Watching Pavlik fight is like playing Fight Night Round 4 on my PS3 (and ironically, Pavlik fights the SAME DAMN WAY on the game too lol). Jonestly, Pavlik really had no chance in hell of beating Williams. Williams would have run thru Pavlik like bad chinese food (unless Pavlik got lucky and KO'ed Williams).
Martinez, on the other hand, is a totally different fight. He is fast, a great boxer, good power, and has great combinations, just like Williams. Think of him as a shorter, Latino Paul Williams lol.. And before people say that "Williams has the advantage in weight", both fighters normally hydrate on fight nite up to about 165-168. If the Williams -Pavlik fight were to happen, Williams more than likely would have come in on the "heavy side", about 167 on fight nite. Pavlik would have probably clocked in around 170+.
Anway, I still pick Williams by close decision, but dont be suprised if Martinez pulls out a win. Martinez is a 10x better fighter than Quintana. If he utilizes the left hook on Williams, it may spell trouble for P-Will..
