Haye beats Valuev for WBA heavyweight title

  • Print

NUREMBERG, Germany (AP)—David Haye certainly backed up his brash prediction.

Haye used his superior quickness to surprise Nikolai Valuev, winning a majority decision on Saturday night and winning the WBA heavyweight title.

The British challenger came close to knocking down Valuev for the first time in his 16-year pro career during the final round, but had to settle for the decision. The scores were 116-112 on two of the judges’ cards, and a 114-114 draw on the other.

“The key was my speed,” Haye said. “People don’t realize I am very fast. And I have a powerful punch. I’m athletic, and if I wasn’t a boxer I would be playing football or rugby.”

The former cruiserweight titleholder won his third fight at heavyweight, despite giving up nearly a foot and 100 pounds to the tallest and heaviest champion in history.

“Everybody thought I was crazy,” Haye said, “but I knew I could make him miss.”

Haye had spent months taunting fellow heavyweight champions Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko, and even embarked on a press tour to promote a fight against Wladimir Klitschko before it was called off. Now, he’ll probably escape facing the two men considered the best in the division because his first defense of the WBA title is supposed to be against John Ruiz.

The former titleholder earned the shot by stopping Adnan Serin in the seventh round earlier in the night—and already Haye is offering another prediction.

“He’s a good fighter who is very underrated,” Haye said of the American. “He is not the most spectacular, but I don’t feel like I will struggle with him. He’s about the same size as me and I think I will knock him out.”

Valuev dropped to 50-2, and admitted that Haye was too quick for him.

“Tonight only one thing happened that I didn’t expect,” Valuev said. “It was like a marathon for me. It was like a track event. I wasn’t ready to run that much.

“The judges made their scoring and I think the last round made the difference, especially the end of it.”

Haye tried to keep Valuev on the move, opening with a left to the Russian’s chin followed by a powerful combo. Valuev struggled to catch Haye, finding him only with left jabs.

Haye said he injured his right hand hitting Valuev in the head, likely in the second round.

“It was like punching a brick wall,” Haye said.

Nicknamed “The Hayemaker,” the Brit connected with big rights and lefts to Valuev’s head to build up his points lead. Valuev finally came alive beginning in the fourth round, but in the sixth Haye landed a right-left combo and two solid lefts.

Haye continued to make Valuev work while finding holes, including a strong right followed by a left to Valuev’s face in the ninth. After another big right in the 10th, Haye wrapped up the fight by landing two left hooks that left Valuev wobbly in the 12th.

    I think its OFFICAL...

    1. Give up the Belt and save yourself

    2. Fight HOLYFIELD

Since I don't have the time or energy to respond to any of you let me break down the heavyweight division. The last great heavyweight was Evander Holyfield. Until he got old. Lennon Lewis?? hmm... Oliver McCall and Hasim Rahman anyone? give me a break. Lennox for his size, was a joke. Bowe, bum, Tyson, half bum, Wladimir, since his revival is the best heavyweight we seen since Holyfield's prime. Now with Emmanuel Steward, he can't be stopped. Not anytime soon anyway.

Haye Fever? Gunning for the Klitschkos?? Be careful what you wish for! Holyfield really won a unanimous decision against Valuev but since he got screwed David Haye wins a majority decision. He won't last 6 with either Klitschko. Especially the Steel Hammer Dr. Wladimir Klitschko. I can't wait for David Haye to just go away.

Altimate you are a complete and total idiot. Haye has not recently had a 99% KO ratio. Even BEFORE the Valuev fight Hayes KO ratio if you want to include ALL fights including his loss would be 91.3%. Vitalis KO ratio even including losses would be 92.5%, Hayes drops even lower than Vitalis to 87.5% as of today. And Vitali's losses come to big name top fighters in Byrd and Lewis. Hayes loss, to Carl Thompson. You know much about Thompson? I assume not because he was a mid level fighter! You would have a much better time trying to belittle Wladimir than Vitali you chump. Vitali has never been KO'd, never been knocked down, never lost a decision, and he has the best KO ratio. Go watch the replay of Vitali vs Arreola, listen to Michael Buffer mention Vitali's Ko ratio as the BEST. So Buffer is a liar? Man, i dont even know why I respond to you. You are just going to come back with non-sensical Haye nuthugging BS. I get it, you like Haye. But to belittle HW's that have proven WAYYYY more than Haye in their division, just proves how gay you are for Haye

If you want real facts moron, check out this link and listen to what Buffer says at about the 1 minute mark: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhbehZzw_lE

Holyfield looked so good against Valuev that I was sure he was the winner and then they read the score cards and I had probably the same look on my face that Evander did. I still cant believe it to this day. everytime I watch the fight I just sit there wtching Holyfied stick and move for the entire fight. He out landed Valuev both in power and total punches making the 7 footer appear slow and imobile. That fight will always be in my mind one of the biggest IF NOT THE BIGGEST bad decision's of all time. This aint no amatuer back yard, non televised bout. We are talking about a heavyweight title fight. What a joke!!!!!!!! it doesn't matter though because that was pretty much Holyfields last shot at a championship. He is 47 years old right now and if he got a shot at the title right now he would be 48 when he fought. BIG SETUP FOR VALUEV. I wonder how much of the purse money Valuev payed the judges that night. In my mind Evander Hloyfield is the oldest HW champ ever!

    I AGREE #161...

HOLYFIELD should have this belt no IF"S AND"S or BUT"S about it...

They should have the guts to atleast admit their problem, yet alone give him another shot and fight for the BELT again.

Trying to Lie and Suck the sweatty Jock - Straps, of both of those overrated stiffs, KLITSCHKO Brothers... Hater - Aid! all that you want on the very talented, quick, hard - hitting DAVID HAYE.. Now that he has did what he was supposed to do.. Which is beat down and take the title from that big lumbering clud, VALUEV.. To get himself another title. ( now in the Heavyweight division ). Which was a very smart busness move... Now when he get,s ( Hopefully ) that Glass chined overrated stiff WLADAMIRE, into the ring.. And Beat - Down and Blast him out in or befor the 7th round.. Then HAYE will only needs to get and beat - down, that overrated " Quitter " VITALI.. To becomes the Un - Disputed Heavyweight Champion.. Oooopppsss! Once again i have caught a KLITSCHKO fan spewing very Mis - Factual and simply Lying non - facts!... Aaa-huumphh! OK! Mr. SAMH speaking of GEMS!.. Since you thought that you could try to correct Me, with very mis - factual lies... LoL!... Let me make this very short and sweet.. You tried to dis-credit my facts.. That the truly Talented, Quick Hard - Hitting DAVID HAYE did not have a better KO! record. Than either of the KLITSCHKO did.. By Lying saying that VITALI had a record of 37 KO,s in 38 fights.. ( Lie! ).. First off! with out even exposing that in - correct number..( in Numbers ).. How is it that VITALI not only lost by stoppage.. To the last truly great heavyweight champ, LENNOX LEWIS.. ( But He, VITALI also lost to the slick but feather fisted CHRIS BYRD ).. LoL! So ( Lier! ) SANH, talk about someone getting off of someones nut,s... How could VITALI have a 99% KO! ratio?.. When he got beat twice?.. Huuuummmm? Something just don,t add up if you ask me.. Because fool, we both know that up untill his last winning fight. 3 days ago, HAYE did have a 99% KO! ratio.. ( Better than either KLITSCHKO had ).. Yet! your fellow KLITSCHKO Nut - Biter, Mr. MICHAEL.. first mis - factually posted that HAYE, could,nt finish fights?... ( Which is what i was factually correcting ).. Yet instead of stepping up like a real man. To correct your compatriot Mr. MICHAEL... You had the nerver to embarrass yourself, by trying to lie. To cover up the truth.. Now who looks like the Nut - Biter now Mr. SANH.. Huuummmm???...

Lol and I noticed another gem in your post #153 after glancing over it again. You say Hayes KO record FAR outshines the Klitschkos.....Lets see Haye is 21 of 23 for KO's, which is very good. However Vladimirs is 47 out of 53, which isnt much below Hayes. And Vitali has the best KO of any professional boxer that has over 30 fights with 37 of 38 by KO.....Get off Hayes nuts until he beats a real HW, or until he goes back to the weight class he belongs in.

HAHAHA #153. Haye is going to blast through Wladimir? Like no one he has faught in the last 5 1/2 years has been able to?! Your post is borderline idiotic. You steadfastly defend Haye, whom has yet to truly be tested as a HW. Valuev is not a talented HW, and that is a fact. So you defend the untested Hayes, and belittle Klitschko. Either Klithscko could be considered the most dominant HW of this decade, with only Lewis being able to claim that in the very beginning of the decade. Yet you belittle both and say that someone shouldnt belittle the untested Hayes......Wow, makes total sense. Oh and before you question both Klithsckos ability to take punches, maybe you should remember that Vitali has NEVER been on the canvas.

flex and Altimate G, I respect your right to have your opinion, but all opinions are not equally valid. Keep watching and learning about boxing, and definitely take time to review those bouts from the 70's. I watched them in real time, before you were born. As your knowledge of boxing matures, I have no doubt that you will eventually see just how great the Klitchkos truly are. Peace.

Mr. MICHAEL, Just as i have tried to Factually correct your total Mis - Facts.. In your delibrate attemps to put down and low - rate. The truly very Talented, Quick Hard - Hitting, DAVID HAYE!.. First! Clearification of your Mis - Facts!.. Fact! DAVID HAYE, ( Was the un - disputed Cruiser-Weight Champion! ).. Befor deciding to move up in weight.. To challenge in the very patheticly almost truly Talentless, Heavyweight division.. So you saying that HAYE is not a true champion?. Is truly a very delibrate and mis - informed, LIE!.. Just like you, saying that HAYE, can,t finish fights?.. When if you go back and check HAYE, s record.. You will see that his KO! Record.. Far out-shines either of your overrated stiff, KLITSCHKO Brother,s KO Record!... And finally you even trying to dispute?. The almost totally one sided beating, that HAYE. Put on that Slow, Lumbering almost totally Talentless, VALUEV is truly blinded lunacy at best!.. Your blinded Hater - Aiding of HAYE.. Just because un - like 95% of todays sorry Heavyweight division.. He, HAYE has real true Quickness, Talent, Boxing Ability and a Aggressive Hard - Hitting style.. To Beat and present the overrated stiff KLITSCHKO, s with problems that they are not used to dealing with.. Add that to the fact!. That neither KLITSCHKO Brother takes being hit back hard very well.. ( especially WLADAMIRE ).. I can hardily waite to see HAYE use his quickness, and power to blast WLADAMIRE, out.. And ex-pose him for the overrated stiff that he always truly was...

Haye cant finish fights cause his punches are weak. The weakness to Heavyweight is David Haye. A loser like him can never be a true champion. He beat Value by 4 pts and that one judge was from United States which he hate Russians thats the only reason why he scored Haye as winner so im not even surprise.
Every time it goes to distance Americans wins cause Judges favor them more. So in order for foreign boxer to win they need to do a knockout.

Agree whole heartedly with post 148! Tyson was much more than some bully who intimidated opponents into looking for a soft place to fall, he was one of the most naturally gifted fighters I have ever seen! This guy had incredible hand and foot speed, pinpoint accuracy, jaw-breaking power in both hands and an intense desire to impale you with a punch!!! I hated to see him destroy his life (helped along by Don King, Robin Givens and Desiree Washington) the way he did. David Haye is a fine boxer to be sure, but I doubt there will EVER be another Mike Tyson!

Yes! Mr. FLEX I totally 1000 percent, do agree with your post at number # 140.. What you wrote is something. That i have for a very long time now, have tried to clearly and factually point out.. Which is that both of those overrated big stiffs, KLITSCHKO Brothers ( especially WLADAMIRE ).. Is very overrated and Mediocre talented at best!.. The only reason that those two big mediocre stiffs. ( KLITSCHKO, s ).. Has been on top of their division.. Is factually and only because of the very pathetic and sad state. Of the sorry arse Heavyweight division... The today,s Heavyweight division, is truly 95 percent, Over-stuffed!. Full of a bunch of Slow, Mostly Fat, Weak, Talentless, Pludding Stumb - Bums!.. If either VITALI or WLADAMIRE would have been around at any other time in Heavyweight boxing history.. Neither of them would have ever ranked any higher than number 10 or 11th.. Add that to the fact that WLADAMIRE has been proven to have a almost Glass chin.. And Once a fighter does start getting to VITALI. ( He finds a way to Quit!.. I totally give the truly very Talented, Quick, Hard - Hitting DAVID HAYE.. A very Quick, Manuverable, Aggressive Hard - Hitting talent!... That i give a very good chance to beat, either of those overrated KLITSCHKO, s.. ( again especially WLADAMIRE )........ Peace!...
