Pacquiao stops Cotto to win 7th title

  • Print

LAS VEGAS (AP)—Manny Pacquiao’s speed and power were way too much for Miguel Cotto’s heart.

Pacquiao put on yet another dominating performance Saturday night, knocking down Cotto twice and turning his face into a bloody mess before finally stopping him at 55 seconds of the 12th round.

The Filipino star used his blazing speed and power from both hands to win his seventh title in seven weight classes and cement his stature as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Cotto took such a beating that his face was a river of red from the fury of Pacquiao’s punches, but he refused to quit even as his corner tried to throw in the towel after the 11th round.

“I didn’t know from where the punches were coming,” Cotto said.

The fight was billed as a 145-pound classic, and in the early rounds it didn’t disappoint. The two went after each other with a vengeance and Cotto more than held his own as they traded punches in the center of the ring before a roaring sellout crowd at the MGM Grand arena.

Pacquiao dropped Cotto with a right hand early in the third round, but he wasn’t badly hurt and came back to finish the round strong. But after Pacquiao put Cotto on the canvas with a big left hand late in the fourth round, the Puerto Rican was never the same again.

Cotto won two rounds on the scorecards of two ringside judges and just one round on the card of the third. The Associated Press gave Cotto just the first round.

“Our plan was not to hurry, but to take our time,” Pacquiao said. “It was a hard fight tonight and I needed time to test his power.”

Cotto’s face was marked early and he was bleeding midway through the fight as Pacquiao kept bouncing around and throwing punches in his unorthodox southpaw style. He tried to keep taking the fight to Pacquiao, but by then his punches had lost their sting and his only real chance was to land a big punch from nowhere.

“He hit harder than we expected and he was a lot stronger than we expected,” Cotto’s trainer, Joe Santiago, said.

Cotto fought gamely, but in the later rounds he was just trying to survive as blood flowed down his face and Pacquiao came after him relentlessly. Santiago tried to stop the fight after the 11th round, but Cotto went back out to take even more punishment before a final flurry along the ropes prompted referee Kenny Bayless to end it.

Cotto’s wife and child, who were at ringside, left after the ninth round, unable to watch the beating any longer. They later accompanied him to a local hospital for a post-fight examination.

“My health comes first. I just want to make sure I’m fine, but I feel great. I’m swollen but that’s all,” Cotto said.

His face swollen, Cotto was bleeding from his nose and his cuts, and he simply couldn’t stop Pacquiao from bouncing inside and throwing both hands at will.

“Manny Pacquiao is one of the best boxers I ever fought,” Cotto said.

Pacquiao, coming off of spectacular wins over Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, added another one against Cotto, who had lost only once and held the WBO version of the welterweight title.

Pacquiao did it in his trademark way, throwing punches in flurries and from all angles until Cotto began to slow down. Then he pursued him nonstop until the end.

The fight likely will set up an even bigger one against Floyd Mayweather Jr., and many in crowd were already chanting, “We want Floyd! We want Floyd.”

“I want to see him fight Mayweather,” trainer Freddie Roach said.

Mayweather may have second thoughts after Pacquiao did what no fighter has done before—win a belt in a seventh weight class. More impressive, though, is how he has fought, dismantling opponents despite moving up consistently from 106 pounds to the 144 he weighed for the fight.

The welterweight ranks will be the last ones Pacquiao conquers, though.

“This is the last weight division for me,” Pacquiao said. “It’s history for me and more importantly a Filipino did it.”

He was so dominant in the later rounds that Cotto was fighting backward most of the way, simply trying to survive. Pacquiao was credited with landing almost twice as many punches—336-172—as Cotto.

“I knew when Cotto started backing up, the fight was over,” Roach said.

Pacquiao earned a minimum $13 million, while Cotto got $7 million.

Pacquiao was favored, largely off his last two performances in which he forced De La Hoya to quit on his stool and then knocked out Hatton with a huge left hook in the second round. Some in boxing, including Roach, thought Cotto had been slowed by his devastating loss last year to Antonio Margarito and would be further slowed by having to come in 2 pounds lower than his normal weight.

That wasn’t the case early in the fight, with Cotto winning the first round and fighting well. Once he was knocked down by a big left hand late in the fourth round, though, he slowed noticeably.

david chi chi chi chia pet's definition of liking Pacman is to bash and discredit his accomplishments. Here's another definition for ya... hypocrite (hy.po.crite) \ˈhi-pə-ˌkrit\ : noun - 1. a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings, 2. davidchi, 3. yes, davidchipocrite. Use it in a sentence - David chipocrite is a hypocrite.

David chia pet thinks if Floyd had waited and challenged Pacman right after the Hatton fight that the fight would have taken place right away. What a joke. Floyd just challenged Pacman right after the Cotto fight.... do u see the fight happening any time soon? Now that's a lame a$$ excuse for Floyd ducking Pacman. Now he's tryng to hide the fact by saying "don't u think it's better now, because he beat Hatton and Cotto"... what if Manny had lost? You can clearly consider Pacman fighting DLH/Hatton/Cotto as good business decision because those are the best options in drawing a crowd. On the other hand, Mayweather vs JMM, when Floyd could have made more with Manny (and probaly Cotto and Mosley) - not so much a good business decision. So according to u it's either a good business decision or what???? Yes, DUCKING!!!

david, let's put it this way...
pacquiao said it out loud and clear he wants to fight floyd.
did mayweather say that out loud?
i might be wrong here but he did not call out pacquiao.
    pacquiao did.
remember, he issued the chalenge for pacquiao to call him out.
now, it's his turn to reiterate.
    call pacquiao out.
it was his challenge in the first place.
    he hee
a duck dressed up in any color would still be a duck.
it's time to shed the dress, so to speak.
he might just do it but for now, he is still a duck.

    now, for the ducking story=
When the tale begins, a lexi's eggs hatch. One of the little birds is perceived by the duck’s neighbors as a homely little creature and suffers much verbal and physical abuse. He wanders sadly from the barnyard and lives with wild ducks and geese until hunters slaughter the flocks. He then finds a home with an old woman but her cat and hen tease him mercilessly and again he sets off on his own. He sees a flock of migrating wild swans; he is delighted and excited but he cannot join them. Winter arrives. A farmer finds and carries the freezing little bird home, but the foundling is frightened by the farmer’s noisy children and flees the house. He spends a miserable winter alone in the outdoors but, when spring arrives, he is welcomed into a flock of beautiful swans for he has matured into one of them.

It was confirmed, not announced, that he was coming back on May 2. He, or his people however someone may want to put it, was ready to come back in March. I'm pretty sure that's when the talking to Marquez began.
His "retirement" is a little overblown. No one seriously thought he would stay retired. Mayweather himself really just said he was taking a break from boxing. I think it would have been smarter for more people to concentrate on that then the use of the word "retirement". He had talked retirement before after the DLH fight.

I think even his most ardent detractors or supporters will say Floyd Mayweather is a businessman before a boxer and I think that's a good thing. Isn't the fight bigger now than if he had fought Pac in the summer? Pacquiao wouldn't have the Hatton or Cotto wins and would still be an unproven ppv attraction on the scale of May and Oscar. Plus he would have had only one fight at welter and that was with the washed up, drain DLH. The choice of JMM had to be related to Pacquiao fighting Hatton. Had those two fights happened when they were scheduled, we would probably be talking about results instead of hypotheticals.

    And finally edison
You don't have to defend yourself on things I didn't even say you said. You didn't say Mayweather ducked Cotto or Margarito nor did you call Pacquiao a "warrior", then I wasn't talking about you.

davidchi, you just make things up and expound on it creating your own reality.
Here is a fact you conveniently altered to accomodate the rest of your argument..
Mayweather went to the media and announced his fight with Marquez 2 hrs hours before the Pac / Hatton fight.

Your Mosely news is late or you cannot afford PPV.
In classic Mayweather style, Mosely announced his fight with Berto a few hours before Pac / Cotto. Effectively dodging Pacman.

If you didn't fit the bill, then I wasn't talking to or about you. You may be being defensive for nothing. It seems like you feel I called you that without really knowing if I did. Like I said, if I did, I did. It's just better if at least one of us could accurately remember if I did. That's the problem with a lot of people in this thread: it doesn't really matter what actually happened, just how they feel about it.

I have no idea where you can see "bitter" in anything I've posted. That's on you because I don't see it or feel it.

    On to the boxing
It is not well documented that he ducked Manny Pacquiao. He came out of retirement this spring and was scheduled to fight JMM in July. Pac had to fight Ricky Hatton in May. Even if he challenge Manny, there is no way Freddie Roach would have agreed to two fights that close together especially with two fighters so different and the second one being Floyd Mayweather.
If you want to find out what has been written on it, check and see how many people, myself included, think he picked JMM and the summer in an effort to fight Pacquiao by the end of this year but got injured in training.
You can't duck a guy who's not available. And considering the hell he caught from some for fighting a smaller Marquez, he did right in letting Pacquiao get in a jr. welter fight with Hatton and the injury allowed Pac to fight a legit welter in Cotto, making a possible match between them more enticing.

i said and am saying it again, he ducked pacquiao when he had the chance to fight him.
you can check it up for all i care and you will not find me sayingg otherwise.
    okay?
now, how can i fit the criteria of your bill when i did not say the ones you enumerated in your bill?

so, i'll say this again, floyd ducked pacquiao.
floyd did not duck anybody else BUT pacquiao.
this is well documented and i think you will agree.
floyd had the chance to call out pacquiao after the hatton fight but he had to veer far to the left just to AVOID pacquiao.

    do i fit the bill?
maybe i do in your eyes but i don't think so.
here's the problem as i see it.
why did mayweather fight marquez instead of pacquiao when he had that big chance in hell to fight him?
to me that's ducking or better still that's a sign of bveing scared!
    he's afraid of fighting pacquiao!
if he's not, as you seem to believe, he should have fought him!
in a way, it a blessing in disguise for him for he would've been the one that has to go to the hospital after the fight..

Good to see you don't restrict your lies to Floyd Mayweather.

Shane Mosley wanted to fight Manny Pacquiao and he wanted to fight Mayweather. Both men chose to fight other guys. Shane even said he'd come down to meet the catchweight if that's what it took. But Freddie Roach is a smart man. He knew the two pounds wouldn't make as much a difference with Mosley as Cotto (he says he expected the two pounds to slow Cotto in the article above). Mosley had to take the Berto fight because Berto is a titlist, a good fighter, and he has to keep busy while Pac and May aim at each other.
Shane's come off the worst loss of his life: his divorce from that crazy wife. He would have gladly taken the Pacquiao fight.
So should I add another name to the list?

So I didn't call you a hypocrite directly, you just fit the bill, is that it?
I'm not confused at all but you apparently are. So let me, for the umpteenth time, point out the hypocrisy by many of the Pacquiao fans on here. They claim Floyd Mayweather is a coward and ducked several fighters and they claim that Manny Pacquiao is a "warrior" who will fight anyone. But I have named four top fighters at between superfeatherweight and lightweight he did not fight in favor of fighting bigger money, but older, past their prime fighters, one at a catchweight. So the standard I'm referring to is that if one of them is a coward, then they both are. If one is just making good business decisions, they both are.
Floyd was bashed for fighting JMM at a weight he never fought at but Manny did the same thing to Oscar Larios, having him come up two weight classed.

    monde
More bull. After beating Diaz, that was the perfect time to fight Guzman but instead he fought an older DLH and had DLH come down to welterweight to make it happen. That's even worse than Mayweather having Marquez come up to 144 and it showed. Similar to how he didn't fight Raheem to take a rematch with Morales, having Morales come back from lightweight to super feather (thanks for the earlier correction).
So, in your opinion, Raheem wasn't the best at lightweight, and that's up for conjecture, but did he fight Casamayor, ever? So I can add another name to the list.
And finally, the Mayweather-Judah fight was signed before Zab lost to Carlos Baldomir, at a time when Judah was universally recognized as the best welter in the world. So he cherrypicked the best guy in the division. The Baldomir fight was supposed to be a tuneup but Zab foolishly underestimated the journeyman and got beat.

See if you would stop leaving out small but significant details, you'd be telling a more honest story.
