Ward claims Kessler’s WBA title, fight stopped

  • Print

OAKLAND, California (AP)—American Andre Ward claimed the WBA super middleweight title from Denmark’s Mikkel Kessler on Saturday in a bout that had to be stopped early, leaving the ex-champion’s camp complaining of dirty tactics.

Ward (21-0, 13 KOs) added his first world championship belt to his Olympic gold medal with an upset victory in his hometown.

A ringside physician stopped the fight midway through the 11th round after looking at a growing cut on Kessler’s face, which was caused by a head butt.

A fight is decided on the scorecards in a technical decision. Sweden’s Mikael Hook favored Ward 97-93, while South Africa’s Stanley Christodoulou and California’s Steve Morrow both scored it 98-92 for Ward. The Associated Press also had it for Ward 97-93.

It was a surprise defeat for Kessler (42-2), the WBA champion for most of the past five years and the early favorite to win the Super Six super middleweight tournament.

“Right now, I’m dreaming,” Ward said. “I can’t compare this to winning the gold medal, because it’s going to take a while for it all to sink in,” Ward said.

“Everyone said we got the bad draw, but we just beat the toughest guy.”

Ward acknowledged there were two head butts which contributed to Kessler’s injury, but said they were accidental.

“I’m not a dirty fighter, everybody knows that.”

However Kessler was angered by his opponent’s tactics, and adamant he could have fought on.

“He was the better man tonight, but I would have liked the fight to go another minute,” Kessler said. “I knew I could have continued. I was cut, but the cuts weren’t that bad.

“He threw a lot of elbows, and there were a lot of head butts, and he never got any warnings. … I don’t want to sit here and complain all the time, but I wasn’t happy with the referee.”

Kessler’s camp was upset even before the fight about the selection of California-based referee Jack Reiss, asking for an official from a “neutral territory,” as mandated in the Super Six contracts. After the fight, Kessler and his camp criticized Reiss for allowing too much holding and inside fighting, leading to head clashes.

“Without taking anything away from his win, the referee helped him from the first minute,” said Wilfried Sauerland, Kessler’s promoter. “He used his head, he used his elbow, and he didn’t even get a warning, he didn’t get a caution. That was a bit much.”

Ward hasn’t lost a fight since early in his amateur career more than 10 years ago. He rolled through the Athens Olympics five years ago, including a quarterfinal victory over Russian world champion Evgeny Makarenko—the last fight in which he faced such long odds.

Kessler had won his past three fights since his only loss to Joe Calzaghe in 2007, briefly relinquishing the WBA title he has held since 2004. The Dane was the favorite in the tournament matching six of the world’s top super middleweights, and he was confident enough to fight stateside for just the second time in his career.

After a slow start, Ward turned the fight in the fourth round with an uppercut that rocked the more aggressive Kessler and opened a cut on his face. Ward then took charge, repeatedly landing combinations and sneaky shots.

Ward was much busier than Kessler, opening a cut above the Dane’s left eye in the middle rounds. Kessler’s struggled against the American’s busier style, and he began backpedaling, with Ward landing enough punches to hurt him repeatedly.

“I felt like it was my time,” Ward said. “I was not intimidated by Kessler’s record.

“I was surprised that Kessler didn’t change up at all. He kept doing the same thing over and over.”

After a convincing victory over Edison Miranda in May, Ward made the Super Six field along with fellow Americans Andre Dirrell and Jermain Taylor, who both lost their first bouts to Carl Froch and Arthur Abraham, respectively. After each boxer has three group-stage fights, the top four will advance to the tournament semifinals—which means Ward and Kessler very well could meet again within two years.

“This will make the tournament more exciting,” Kessler said. “I don’t want to be the favorite.”

I seen this fight from row number 1 sitting right by andre dirrell brother anthony and andre ward beat that guy down. He would of won the fight anyway if he did not accidental headbutt him and the head and it went 12 rounds. Andre Ward showed he is the best fighter and this tounament and he ain't going to stop intil he win it all. I have not seen kessler fight alot but if that's what he got he need more, Andre ward showed no fear, speed and alot more power than I thought he had.

So all you haters and Europeans stop hating cause taylor week a** is next so don't worry about the Americans cause he going to stop them next.

He put the EAST BAY ON THE MAP BAY AREA He is the champ.

I'm a big fan of the sweet science, and what I seen Saturday of the Ward v. Kessler fight, Andre Ward fights like an amateur, lounging in with his head, throwing wide looping punches, stooping almost to the canvas, holding. If you don't get better and get a better trainer you will not have the WBA belt long. And Kessler I thought you were a better fighter, with all of Wards flaws you couldn't side step any of those wild and wide punches, you didn't throw not one defining punch, you didn't go to the body to neutralize his speed,so in truth, you fought like a bum too. As of what I have seen so far,Authur Abram is the best fighter of the Super Six. Jermain Taylor RETIRE, Andre Dirrell you need to get better or RETIRE.

To all those who say European fighters are over rated, obviously you're a bunch of kids who got no clue about boxing...Ward won, a win is a win albeit a dirty one at that, using his thick head to headbutt other boxers is a dirty tactic by me...
That being said Im sure Klitschkos, and other Europeans that have dominated the heavyweight scene for so long are overrated too...Kessler will bounce back, and Abraham will hand Ward his ass...

Kessler is a bum who has only beat a bunch of Danish cab drivers and who got destroyed in the 2 real fights he has had against Ward and Calzaghe. Kessler's owners and handlers knew he could not win, which is why they were whining and crying in advance over judges and referees. Kessler's own, hand picked, anti American, foreigner judges from South Africa and Sweden said Kessler lost, so Kessler should be a man and admit to losing. I hope Taylor and Kessler both quit the super 6 because they both suck and should retire and this tournament should just be the final 4 with Froch, Abraham, Ward, and Dirrell.

What I seen in the fight was that Kessler Wanted to quit,He Clearly did not want to finish this fight, his corner made him come out,he knew he was outclassed. I was a huge Kessler fan and didnt think andre Ward had anything on the Dane but I was totally WRONG. There was some headbutts but NOT on purpose, just the result of different fighting styles or mabe the result of having the same start off moves. Clear cut win,Simply world class,The guy was phenomenal!!!!!!!!!!! God and America Rules!!!!!!!!!!

I am a SF Bay Area resident who watched the fight and have to agree with Kessler's criticism of the refereeing and Ward's borderline tactics. Ward repeatedly ducked and lunged forward and upward with his head, catching Kessler's face with the crown of his head. He claims it was accidental.

Once is an accident, twice maybe. But I saw it happen no fewer than four or five times. Clearly was intentional. The ref was also very poor at breaking the fighters out of Ward's repeated clinches. Ward got in numerous cheap shots/kiedney punches during these clinches.

I really wanted to see Ward win and see a great performance, but what I saw was a dirty fighter with good handspeed and little real power, except in his head butts, of course.

To # 39 alphonso, and alot of your other retard crybabys, get over it,ward is now the new champ, kessler is a has been,I even bet on kessler to win but Ward was just to good. If any body wants to cry about being dirty and stuff like that, then cry about Dirrel getting robbed in his fight, that was worse than 15 headbutts and a kick to the d@$k. But one thing I seen was that Dirrell in defeat, was not as much as a crybaby as kessler and his handlers and promoter was. Being American means that if we lose we come back stronger and better,we dont sit there and cry about it.Watch dirrell Kick ass his next fight,Hope he makes Abraham whine like a little bit$h Too!!!!!!!!!!

Ward dominated Kessler from round 1 to the stoppage, he did everything he needed to win and he was successful. I only saw two headbutts, and both appeared to be accidental with only one looking somewhat bad. Now the hitting during the tie ups were perfectly legal, the ref didn't stop it or say stop and boxing says protect yourself at all times.

Kessler does have very good skills but Ward's hand speed made all the difference. You can't stop what you can't see.

Ward won the fight. EVERYONE stop complaning. Some of you must not watch boxing because the person that said that was the worse fight he has seen in 22 years must be smoking. I have seen BAD fights. As a boxer you use what you have to win. Look at Roy, when he would throw a punch and miss he would grab. Sugar Shane does the same. Now I am not saying anything bad about them because I like both of those fighters. Ricky Hatton bullies people around and grabs and hold. Lennox Lewis jab and hold. Like someone said in another post if the boxer you wanted to win lose people start making excuses. Kessler got BEAT THATS IT.

First of all European fans need to quit @#$%in Kessler was exposed by a better fighter Kessler has no skills really just like Froch that is why they stay in Europe for all there fights because everyone over there is one dimensional fighters, face it kessler and Froch are jokes, and Ward but the whooping stick on Kessler, Quit your Waaa Waa the ref helped america waa waa, if I wanted to @#$% I could too because Froch did not beat dirrell not a chance he won that fight but as it is Froch wins and Dirrell loses that is the story of boxing, just quit whinning about it go back and watch the fight Ward clearly dominated a one dimensional fighter. European fighters are not that great beside Abraham that guy is a beast and of course Calzaghe was ok not a great champion but a pretty good fighter!!

The officiating was poor. I don't have much of a problem with the clinching and holding but I thought it was pretty poor that it took until late in the fight (when it was already out of hand) for the referee to address Kessler and his corner and state that they should punch out of the breaks. There shouldn't be punching out of the breaks anyways, but that's beside the point.

The referee really needed to warn/deduct points for the head butts. It can be disputed whether the butts were intentional or unintentional, what can't be was the clear toll it took on Kessler's face. Kessler did holding of his own, but how could he not when he couldn't see from the cuts! I wouldn't mind seeing these two meeting again, and I'd like to think the butting wil not be a part of a rematch. Ward may have beaten Kessler without the butting as he did look like the quicker fighter, but I can't definitively say that he would have landed punches at nearly as clean and flush a rate if Kessler could have seen them and picked them off. I really hope the Super Six doesn't fall apart as this could be a great tournament for boxing. Unifying belts would be great, and the thought of fresh challengers not involved in the tournament (Lucian Bute, Allan Green, etc) being left to fight a unified champion in another 2 years is exciting. At this point my personal new favorite in the competition is Arthur Abraham who's combination of power, speed and defense will be tough for anyone in the tourney. Froch is very good, but I think he'll leave himself open to catching some big blows from some of the other fighters, and is a similar fighter, but less talent version of Kessler IMO.

Final note, please leave the God kissing at home. I don't want to hear about "Jesus his lord and savior" yada yada yada.

Being very generous to Kessler let's say he gets two points deducted for the headbutts. He still loses by multiple rounds on every single card. Is there really anymore argument needed? Ward dominated the fight from beginning to end and shocked the world.

Kessler was losing no matter what. If you look at the judges score cards the fight wasn't close at all. It was very one side to say the least. Ward took it to Kessler and Kessler had no answer for Wards speed. I would agree Ward did a lot of lunging due to his inmaturity and exeperience but that wasn't why there was head butts and near head butts. Ward lunged wildly a lot and if Kessler was smart he would have side stepped and countered but his mindset was to jab and fight on the outside but his speed and power couldn't hold Ward off. He only tried taking it to Ward when he was frustrated and felt the fight slipping away. The jugdes had it 98-92, 97-93, 98-92. Kessler was lucky that Ward was leaving his feet instead of punching through his legs and hips or he might have been knocked out. If you generate your power through your lower body which Ward obviously wasn't for the most part you will have a higher knockout percentage! I would be more worried about a guy with big ASS legs and little arms then someone with big ASS arms and little legs! I've never seen Kessler fight before but he needed to fight with pure hatred.

Ward a dirty, rabbit puncher, head butting boxer, light puncher boxer. He will not be in a throne for a long time. He did all the dirty trick he knows to win the fight. Watch the replay and you can easily see what he did.

All night what I saw was Ward puting his head down then lunging towards' Kessler's face, holding and he was literally "sucker" punching Kessler in his ribs and back of head...bad call by the referee he should have warned Ward not to hold or headbutt, he didnt do it until it was too late...that said Ward is good, and so is Kessler and in another one Id still go with Kessler. Ward didnt box he was defensive all the time, Kessler was pursuing him much more..anyways a win is a win I guess but Ward sure didnt make it exciting....and no he's not gonna win this thing-Abraham will.

Dirrel were you watching? Ward S.O.G showed you how it's suppose to be done. Don't complain when you're fighting, just f%*king fight your A$$ off. When you fight you have to be very mean, calm, and confident, don't hold back be very aggressive no whining. Whining weakens you, makes you soft, makes you lose focus, you must always think tough. What did Pac-Man say after his fight with Cotto? I felt like a tiger. thats the attitude you must have when fighting,Pure animal be a beast in there, but a beast that know's how to think, that would have made the froch fight easier.Big up's to Ward. Taylor hang in there Bro,clinch down on your mouth piece more ,and do more neck excercises, this will give you better shock absorbers. Kessler is good but it was wards night. Two thumbs up and mad props to all Six fighters thanks guy's for the entertainment.

This is the type of fight that has so many fans getting sick of boxing. It could have been very exciting, but instead we were treated to a relentless cycle of punch punch hold. Both fighters held, but the overwhelming majority was done by Ward, but I do not blame him, he did what he needed to win. The fault lies with the referee who is supposed to caution a fighter, then deduct points. I think Ward would have won anyway, but we will not know since he was allowed to hold so much. I don't know whether the headbutts were intentional, only Ward knows that, but the butt that occurred in the 8th round was so bad, if it was not intentional, he needs to change his style, because he dove in and led with his head which will result in bad cuts all the time. Kessler showed he was more interested in Ward's holding and butting than actually winning. He never let his right hand go and never tried to bully Ward into the corners at all. I know it is tough to fight with cuts, but there comes a point where a fighter has to let it all go and decide he is going to put on a show, and not just try to win, but be exciting. Unfortunately for the fans, neither one of these fighters displayed that attitude last night.
