Casamayor and Judah both win in ring returns

LAS VEGAS (AP)—Four-time world champion Joel Casamayor and three-time champ Zab Judah both earned victories in their returns to the ring on Friday night.

Casamayor earned a unanimous decision victory over Jason Davis with all three judges scoring the super-lightweight bout 79-73. In the co-main event, Judah stopped Ubaldo Hernandez in the second round.

Judah floored Hernandez twice late in the first round and sent him to the canvas again early in the second with a hard body shot. Hernandez winced in pain and was unable to continue. Referee Joe Cortez stopped the fight 35 seconds into the round.

“I trained hard for this fight and I’m on the road to redemption,” Judah said. “It wasn’t much of a fight, but I trained very hard and was in the best shape of my life.”

The 38-year old Casamayor paced himself throughout the first five rounds of his fight before taking control. He landed numerous power punches in the sixth round and dominated the rest of the way.

“I was turning it on in the sixth and getting my rhythm,” Casamayor said. “It’s better than a first-round knockout. I needed the work.”

Casamayor is now looking for a title shot.

“I felt real good,” he said. “I haven’t fought in a year. I’m an old school fighter and I’m ready for anyone.”

On the undercard, current WBC light heavyweight champion Ron Johnson’s fight with Dumont Welliver was called a no contest due to an accidental clash of heads early in the second round.

Salvador Sanchez, nephew of the featherweight champion of the same name, earned a unanimous decision victory over Jose Pacheco.

wait.....wait....nathanielnovio....Brother why are you counting the past? the fight between cotto and margarito is already histroy. You cannot change history. Granting for the sake of argument that margarito cheated his win that would not do any good because the fact is, cotto lost the fight.Face the fact brother. This is the fight between cotto and pacquiao. Do not bring margarito into the fray.Cotto is a good fighter no question about it.But Pacquiao is a lot better. That is a fact.So why linger on the past fight?. Thats histroy brother.

hey nathanielnovio.....I am a puerto rican. But I am a fan of Pacquiao. I am happy to see Cotto kissing the mat and sleep soundly. He will never bet Pacquiao believe me.Try to see how the boxers like pacquiao and cotto fight. What a big disparity. Ok lets face it cotto is also a fighter but he never fight better than pacquiao.See him fight on saturday and you will find he is better than mayweather because he never run and dance like mayweather but he will not definitely win because pacquiao is the best.

Judah doesn't have the mental strength to finish a fight! He's been beat by people who he would be considered better than. He should just take his bottle oh Hennessy and stay in the corner because he's officially a journeyman.

Judah may have one more run at him but he's already lost to Cotto and Mayweather and I doubt there's much appetite to see him fight Manny Pacquiao. He could position himself to fight the winner of Berto-Mosley but that fighter will be trying to get a fight with May or the Pacquiao-Cotto winner. The best fight he can hope for may be fighting Margarito when his suspension is over.

Judah has proven to be a rung below the top class boxers. he has failed to measure up every time he has taken a step up in class. He is little more than a journeyman who is trying to cash in on whatever small value is attached to his name.

He will be known more for his disgraceful antics after fights he has lost fairly and squarely than any other achievements.

Yeah if Judah trained and focused solely (did i spell that rite) on boxing he could giv it 1 more run at the title. He a good elusive, exiting fighter. He still has a following because of it. He's gotta get dedicated and go hard, Casamayor is goo but not great, age has caught up. He might get one more but he already is dedicated and hit this peak.

judah is still fun to watch. would be interesting to see him actually return to form, focus, and maybe make a real run for another belt.

is so interesting watching casamayor outsmarting fighters.he has been away from his prime since he got to america.his best years were with the cuban national team and basically he has got titles in weights way over his natural fighting weight using his cojones and his ring smarts.if you watch the marquez fight closely is not hard to make the argument that tough he was fading he was ahead.he just could not defend at his age and in the 12th after a body shot, a four punch combination.
i hope he can make a few paydays without getting beat up.

Casamayor is still relevant and Judah has the skills to make another run again but he's not likely because he parties too much!
(Which is why he's known as a 6 rd fighter.)
