Dawson beats Johnson again to remain undefeated
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP)—Chad Dawson, fighting in his home state, won an unanimous decision Saturday over an older and slower Glen Johnson to remain undefeated and win the interim WBC light heavyweight title.
The 27-year-old Dawson, who vacated his IBF title to fight Johnson for a second time, outboxed his 40-year-old opponent, who was never able to get close enough to land the hard punches that made their first fight in April 2008 so tight.
Dawson, a southpaw, used his right jab to score, while keeping Johnson away. He won the early rounds with the strategy, following the jab occasionally with a hard left or a speedy combination.
Midway through the sixth round, Dawson caught Johnson with a left hand that snapped his head back, but that was perhaps the hardest punch he landed.
“I tried to use all the tools to my advantage, and that was the difference in the fight,” Dawson said. “I felt like I landed the big punches when I had to.”
Dawson won a disputed decision over Johnson (49-13-2, 33 KOs) in their first fight. He said he took the rematch to see how much he had grown since then.
He dominated this one, even though Johnson was the one moving forward most of the time, especially in the middle and late rounds.
Johnson stalked Dawson across the ring to connect with his right hand, trying to pin Dawson to the ropes, but he never really caught him.
“He was able to escape some of my bigger punches,” Johnson said. “He didn’t try to fight like he fought the first time. He basically just stayed away from me.”
The two stood toe-to-toe for the first time in the 10th round, exchanging combinations. But neither seemed to be able to hurt the other.
“I wasn’t really thinking about knocking Glen Johnson out,” Dawson said. “I wanted to go in there and put on a good boxing match.”
Dawson (29-0, 17 KOs) now awaits the winner of the Dec. 11 bout between WBC champion Jean Pascal and Adrian Diaconu.
Dawson vacated his IBF title this year after the sanctioning body refused to grant an exception to an immediate defense against Tavoris Cloud, a bout that would have generated far less money and TV interest than one against Johnson.
Johnson, a former “Fighter of the Year” in 2004, had won seven of his last nine fights, but will celebrate his 41st birthday in January.
“I don’t know what else is out there for me,” Johnson said. “I’ll wait and see if anybody wants to put me back to work.”
About 5,200 people showed up for the bout at the 16,500-seat XL Center, which is about 40 miles north of where Dawson grew up in New Haven.
Many booed when it appeared Dawson had chances to mix it up with Johnson, but instead backed off and boxed.
“I don’t let that bother me,” Dawson said. “They’re not the ones in the ring. They’ve never been hit before.”
Dawson entered the ring wearing a number 6 on his robe to honor slain Connecticut football player Jasper Howard. There was also a traditional 10-bell salute for Howard, who was stabbed to death Oct. 18.
On the undercard, Alfredo Angulo knocked out Harry Joe Yorgey just over a minute into the third round to take the interim WBO junior middleweight title.
Angulo knocked Yorgey down in the second round. He landed 63 percent of his power punches, including 30 of 35 in the final round, catching Yorgey with a hard left hook to end the fight.
Yorgey’s camp complained he was hit twice in the back of the head in the second round and twice while he was on the ground.

He fought Hagler and won. However, I am like Richard Steel. Everytime I watch that fight it gets closer and closer. I am a big Ray Leonard fan but I think by today's boxing standards Marvin wins that fight going away. Leonard had that unsually big ring to run around all night.

It's not about whether wants to "admit" anything about Floyd Mayweather (I personally disagree strongly) but this article and the Comments that go with it are about the light heavyweight division and it's top fighter, Chad Dawson. There will be plenty of time to argue about Floyd Mayweather, especially after the Pacquiao-Cotto fight. Focus

I understand your point but I see you're one of those fans that has bought into the "wanting to be the best" myth old timers like to spread. Most of those fights you mentioned were old fighters fighting young guys which would be similar to a Dawson-Hopkins or Jones fight. That's a stronger defense of my point than just about anything I could have said. Young lions make their name beating old lions, at least in boxing. Tavoris Cloud may be a very good fighter but he's not a money maker and, going by the size of the crowd at Dawson-Johnson II, neither is Dawson. Dawson rightly is looking to make some money. Floyd Mayweather spent a number of years being the best fighter no one saw until he beat up Arturo Gatti, Zab Judah, and then Oscar De La Hoya. For Dawson, the equivalent of that is Bernard Hopkins and/or Roy Jones Jr. He's a married man with three young sons. The last thing he should be thinking about what a small number of hardcore fans think compared to the greater number of fans who will buy ppvs and watch HBO to see him fight a bigger name.
Seriously, Roberto Duran, like everyone else at that time, wanted to fight Ray Leonard because he was the biggest ticket seller in boxing. Leonard wasn't in any hurry to ever fight Aaron Pryor, who went as far as to interrupt a Leonard press conference and challenged him.

I respectfully disagree. 20-0 is something for Dawson to pay attention to. Boxing needs to move forward, not back to the Geritol fighters like Hopkins, Jones, and Johnson. Iran Barkely did not have a name when he put Hearns to sleep. Hearns did not have a big name when he put Pipino Cuevas to sleep. Arron Davis put Mark Breland to sleep. Lastly, Terry Norris put Leonard out of his misery. I believe a fight between Cloud and Dawson could benefit both fighters if they both leave it all in the ring. I believe that's why people admire the old warriors because it was more about being the best than being rich. Duran wanted to defeat Leonard badly. He was not sitting around with his accountants trying to figure out how much pesos he could get out of the deal.

It is hard to call a man a coward when he steps into a ring to fight, so I will call him a bully because the man picks on old, slow, or lighter opponent! That my friends is a true definition of a COWARD!!! Mosley, Cotto, Clottey, Margarito and Berto need to start calling Mayweather out so when he refuses to fight them all will then see him for what he truely is, A YELLOW COWARD!!!

No boxer with any sense makes "fan decisions". They all make business decisions and that's the way it should be. Fans will not be there when a fighter is suffering from concussion-induced dementia and broke. Cloud may be a very good fighter but he's not even close to a name people will pay money to see fight Chad Dawson or anyone else.

Obviously boxing isn't on life support. More people will pay to see Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto than Fedor. The last time UFC went head to head with a major boxing event, they lost badly. I think MMA can be very exciting but it's got a very long way to go to match the history and success of boxing.

He can't be the reason MMA is overtaking boxing. When his fight went head-to-head with a major UFC ppv, he doubled their buyrate. Boxing does things from a promotional standpoint that hurt them while MMA has one major group with one strong, colorful owner, similar to WWE and pro wrestling.
I know I'm asking in vain but can we focus on the relevant fighter/fighters in this article.

I know he is a gentleman, but he should out Calzaghe rudely, to force him to come out of retirement!!! BUT WE KNOW HE WILL NOT DO THAT!!!

People will see come this Saturday when Pacquiao gets beat up how silly are the rankings! It will be nice if Dawson cleans up the 175lbs. division, but if there is more money at 168 or at 190lbs, take it! By the way, the coward Mayweather needs to fight Cotto, Berto, Mosley, Clottey and Margarito before he thinks he's something special! But he will not because he knows he cannot beat those good 147lbs fighters! It is either old, slow, or smaller boxers he fights and try to fool the public. The real fans now that he is faking his way through a career. If he cares about his legacy and wants to be mention with the Ray Robinsons and Durans, he must fight worthy adversaries! If not he will be a joke to history and it will haunt him the rest of his life!!!

Dawson should be concentrating on getting not only good fights but also marketable fights. Getting the winner of Hopkins-Jones should get him a good payday in front of a bigger audience than a fight with Tavoris Cloud, who doesn't even get on tv (in any major way).
