Haye setting his sights higher to fight Valuev

  • Print

LONDON (AP)—David Haye aimed his jabs and uppercuts higher than ever at a sparring partner who towered over him in thick platform boots on Wednesday, an attempt to replicate the immense size of Nikolai Valuev, the tallest and heaviest world champion of all time.

The brash-talking, fast-punching Haye will fight the 7-foot-2 WBA champion in Nuremberg, Germany, on Nov. 7, and his team has tried various ways to help the Briton raise his game—quite literally—as he bids to become the first to knock out Valuev.

“He’s had 51 fights, he’s never been hurt, never been knocked down,” Haye said. “There’s a lot of people saying it’s a crazy tactic to knock him out.

“But look at my record, 21 out of my 22 victories have come by knockout. And that doesn’t happen by looking for points victories. I look for bombs, looking for his chin, looking to hurt him to the body and the head.”

In the final training session before heading to Germany, Haye’s trainer, Adam Booth, stepped into the ring wearing boots with 6-inch thick soles, forcing the Briton to aim his punches above his own head at the pads on Booth’s hands.

A red line has been drawn 7 feet, 2 inches high around the gymnasium walls to keep Haye constantly aware of the Russian’s height.

“We have the life-size pictures of him here as well just so that, when he’s moving around, he’s constantly reminding himself of the size of the fighter,” Booth said. “When he goes home and sleeps at night, he can make the fellow 10 foot so that, come fight night, nothing will be a surprise.

“We’ve had to hang the bags higher and he’s had top make a few slight adjustments to the angle of his punches.”

Having moved up after unifying the cruiserweight title, Haye will be fighting only his third heavyweight bout and be dwarfed by a fighter with a 50-1 record who is about a foot taller and 100 pounds heavier.

Haye (21-1) will be relying on his speed and mobility, but believes he also has the punching power to stop Valuev.

“I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve,” he said. “I’m looking to be the first British heavyweight world champion since Lennox Lewis retired, and to do that I have got to get past a 7-foot-2, 24-stone Nikolai Valuev.

“It’s the only dream I have. It’s always a tough battle. I always find a way to slay the beast.”

I totally and 100 percently agree with you Mr. DENNISBONDS.. On wishing that the sport of Boxing. Would finally one day create a super heavyweight divsion.. I have for years stated that it is something that truly needs to be done... Not in any other weight classin Boxing. Can you witness such a huge disparity in size and weight advantages. Than in the sorry almost talentless heavyweight divsion.. I have always said that watching a fighter about 6' 1" - to - 6' 3" weighing about or under 225lbs Should,nt have to be matched up against guys coming in at about 6' 5" - to - 6'7" weighing in at around 250 to 260lbs plus.... It,s not fair. Like you Mr. DENNISBONDS. I feel that the sport of boxing in all fairness. Should have made a super heavyweight division, for those really big guys long ago..

Can we get a superheavywieght division please?!? Man, I am so tired of these slow-motion matches pitting these behemoths against one another. In the time between when one of these jurassic-sized cats throws a punch and recoils his arm, I CAN GO MAKE AN OMELET! If they're taller than 6'4", and/or wiegh more than 235, it's kinda like watching two giant robots on low batteries! No athleticism, just two big dudes hitting each other because neither of them can get out of the way! I'm telling you, a SUPERHEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION might just be the answer! We can call the belt, "The Oversized Prize!"

You know how something is so bad, ugly, or gross you can't but help turn your head and look? Kinda like that... I have no interest in either of these two boxers... After I saw the Holyfield vs. Valuev fight, I lost all respect for Valuev for such a HORRIBLE decision and how he actually accepted it. But this fight would be so bad I can't help but look.

I read that the winner fights HOLYFIELD as a payback for their horrible decision... its the right thing to do in my mind... Those judges need to be draged out of their million dollar homes and slapped...

Based on Haye's record or lack thereof (all fights have been of unknowns) and his Klitcko ducking act, his words or boasting carries very little weight. I will start listening if he gets past this giant. Otherwise, he will just fade back into oblivion and the 15 minutes of fame will come to an end.

Mr. DAVED I don,t know or care what your problem is. With the very talented, quick, hard-hitting DAVID HAYE.. But just like Mr. 9er DOC and www. CARIBEANREALLOVE.COM wrote.. I truly feal that VALUEV. Is a total big lumbering no talent having scrub - bum!. And HAYE most definently have the punching power and boxing skills. To KO! that bum VALUEV, in or befor the 5th round of their fight.

Poster 23.( Valuev probably took roids to that big) . LOL , roid, for what the hair on his back?

The man is a giant, who happens to know to jab. If Haye does not have a iron chin, he will get ko's even by the weak jabs that Valuev hits with.

Valuev is a neanderthal with absolutly no skill. Haye wins by decision easily. Either klitschko could whip them both on the same night.

Valuev has no punching power, so i give Haye a good chance to win if he can get past valuev's jab and fights smart. the majority of haye's kos are early and do not see him ko valuev. majority win is his best chance.

Haye did the smart thing by crawdadding out of the V Klitscho fight because Vitaly would have dropped him like a bag of dirt.

Valuev will have a difficult time hitting Haye - provided he moves the entire fight. Will be a close decision in the end.

Even he out points the giant, because he will never knock him out, he still has to beat the klitschko's to be taken seriously. He is just another loud mouth and boxing sees talk everyday. So many people have said the klitschkoos wont this that or the other and they were all wrong. Therefore, Haye has no chance. He is not used to being hit by these bigger guys, who by the way, always connect. Just think of all the others like "fast Eddie chambers" alexander Potvkin and many more that will line up to beat Haye down if he wins. If haye actually pulls this off, he will wish he had not.

I would love to see David Haye win.
He's a flare of excitement, which is something the division has been lacking for a looong time. He's brash, he's confident, he's a loudmouth, and a pretty good boxer although his skills have yet to be truly tested at Heavyweight status. Valuev can be taken, we all saw that with the Holyfield fight. And not to sound like an @#$%, but Evander is over the hill. Don't get me wrong, I love Holyfield, but his days are ending. So if he can beat him, the man who unified the cruiserweight belts singlehandedly should be able to.
