Gatti’s wife to sue over husband’s death

  • Print

SAO PAULO (AP)—The wife of boxer Arturo Gatti intends to sue the state of Pernambuco for arresting her as a prime suspect in her husband’s death a month ago.

Amanda Rodrigues spent 18 days in jail. Gatti, a two-time world champion from Canada, died July 11 while he and his family vacationed in the Brazilian resort town of Porto de Galinhas.

Rodrigues’ lawyer, Celio Avelino, said by telephone Thursday his client is taking action against the state for “wrongfully accusing her of murder.” Avelino said paperwork will be filed in about 20 days. He declined to provide further details.

A day after Gatti was found dead, police said his 23-year-old wife strangled him with her purse strap as he drunkenly slept. But on July 30, police ruled the 37-year-old boxer had committed suicide and Rodrigues was released from jail.

This is pretty simple for me: Explain how you can hang yourself to death with a purse strap. I guess anything is possible, but is sounds rather far-fetched if you just say that. A detailed explanation would help clear up a lot. What kind of strap was it, b/c obviously not your normal purse strap if it's that strong? Dumb it down so average Joes can digest the physics of how that's possible. But they haven't and that's why it looks shady

    No problem!

Here is a link to today's paper, which contains a lengthy interview with Amanda Rodrigues in Brazil, about what happened, about her life now, her marriage with Arturo and her plans (for a translated version, type Journal de Montreal in Google, and hit translate):

Good work d.b..........the payoff theory to police i never did believe.....i think a big problem is that people who have never been to brazil, think that its really bad there ,maybe like some currupt african country, with people living in huts or something, its far from that.So you should look into it like gatti manager did, but its going to be way off base.I still dont like amanda,i think her motives to be with him was mostly money,as the manager of the go-go bar said.....he was no angel either,i have been told he could get aggresive when high, and that he may have had a coke problem, along with the drinking problem.

    Mike and Carl

If you're interested, I've got some really long and detailed pieces reported in editions of the Journal De Montreal, (in particular, one which Carl posted down below about 'Arturo Gatti's Last Night') which has a 5-page detailed section including photographs, interviews, a 2-page map of the Porto de Galinhas town where each incident occurred and loads of other stuff.

Also, yesterday's edition really goes into depth on the Brazilian Police and how they conducted their findings - it also shows a plan of the apartment, photos of Gatti and wife, etc, etc
(unfortunately, it can only be viewed online using a free download application called 'Press Display'), so part of it is posted below:

"Although the Brazilian police have concluded suicide, several questions remain. By visiting the scene and dissecting the testimony of Amanda Rodrigues, police reports and autopsy, the Journal has attempted to understand what may have happened.

    GATTI'S INJURIES
When he was found dead, Gatti had several injury marks on his body. The autopsy report of the Forensic Institute of the State of Pernambuco speaks several bruises caused by blunt objects, including a wound behind the head. According to the autopsy, these injuries may have occurred before or just after death, when the falling body to the ground.
Investigators from the police in Ipojuca argue that these injuries would have occurred before death, in the fight where Gatti has been involved in, in the center of Porto de Galinhas. Witnesses said he saw passers throwing rocks at Gatti. Blood was found on the headrest of the taxi that bought him back to the Ancorar resort. DNA tests showed this was the blood of the boxer.

    BLOOD
During his interrogation by police, Amanda Rodrigues told to be down around 6am to get milk for the baby. She said she noticed that her husband was lying on the ground, but did not be bother about him because it thought he had fallen asleep drunk on the floor. "I was half asleep and angry against him," she said.
She also said she had not noticed the blood...but the pictures of the corpse taken by investigators from the forensic around 11 am show a significant amount of blood on the ground. Asked by the Journal on this subject, the police chief Paulo Alberes contends that the blood would start flowing from the wound that Gatti had behind his head after 9 am, "probably due to Amanda dropping his head back and that she realized he was dead, and she started shaking him. "
The first people who entered the condominium shortly after 9 pm all testified that there was only a little blood around the head of the boxer and it was spreading more and more thereafter.

    ACCOMPLICES
    * Most proponents of the hypothesis of murder does not believe that Amanda Rodrigues, rather frail and might have killed herself the tough boxer. Many people argue, however, she might have had one or more accomplices, or even another person being introduced into the condominium to commit murder. Investigators say they have rejected this possibility for two reasons:
1 - The first is that to enter the apartment, it was essential to use a magnetic card - the doors lock automatically. Esperidião Cristina, who has rented the condo, ensure that there were only two cards issued. Arturo had one and the other was placed in the device that starts electricity in the apartment.
However, only one entry was recorded that morning (11th July): 2:30am
2 - According to Paulo Alberes, if a man or men had murdered Gatti, there were traces of it somewhere. "There was no trace of violence or fighting in the apartment, not even in the immediate environment where the body was found.
3 - The police chief also rejected the hypothesis that Gatti had slept on the couch. No trace of blood or other bodily signs of Gatti has been found on the couch.

    NOISE
In an interview at the Journal, the brother of Arturo, Fabrizio, wondered how he could Amanda Rodrigues did not hear the sound of the falling body of Arturo when the belt broke. The widow has always maintained that she had heard nothing.
Locally, however, the Journal has found that three air conditioners were on the top floor, one bigger than the other in the main room. It is likely that these devices, which were based and which are quite noisy, could mask the noise of the fall.

    DRUNK OR DRUGGED?
Witnesses said that Arturo Gatti had drunk most of two bottles of wine he had ordered at the restaurant where they ate pizza. He then drank a beer in another restaurant, before the dispute that erupted between him and his wife.
Upon arrival at the resort, Gatti smelled of alcohol, but was "not drunk at the point of staggering," according to hotel employees.
Investigators suspect he would have drunk seven cans of Skol beer on arrival at the condominium during the night, after his wife was mounted to the floor with the baby. The empty cans were found in the garbage near the kitchen counter.
However, it knows no more, as toxicology tests conducted by the Institute of Forensic Medicine of the State of Pernambuco (IML) have not yet been made public. Last Friday, at the request of lawyers Brazilian family Gatti and the Canadian government, Judge Andrea Calacio Venancio has ordered toxicology tests are added to the folder that is in the hands of the Attorney Roberto Brayne.
The prosecutor expects to receive the analysis report in the middle of next week. The analysis will then be provided to coroners Quebec who conduct the second autopsy on the body of the boxer.

    CONSPIRACY
    * According to family members and friends Gatti Arturo, police and investigators in Brazil have been corrupted. "I was told that the police earned only $ 5,000 per year in Brazil. It is easy to be corrupted" said manager Pat Lynch
(Indeed, the police "civilians" Brazilians are beginning to pay about $ 5,000 U.S., which is the average annual wage in the country. The heads of police and federal officers, however, are paid much more for 43 000 $ U.S..)
Counsel of Amanda Rodrigues, Celio Avelino, who plans to bring to prosecution against the State of Pernambuco because the police his client unjustly imprisoned for 18 days, said that in this survey, there has not had one investigator involved, but several police.
"In Brazil, the first police officers to intervene are civilian police. Then there are the investigators of the forensic, which is derived from a separate organization. In this case, there was also an autopsy performed by the Forensic Institute. Counsel for the State received the case and a judge also considered the evidence"
    The investigation team comrised of:
Moises Teixeira - Civilian police (district of Porto de Galinhas). Chief of Police District where the death occurred, the officer was responsible for the survey during the first three days. He quickly concluded the conviction of Amanda Rodrigues. He argued it had acted so quickly only because it was "technically impossible" that a third person had entered the apartment.
Josedith Ferreira - Civilian police (responsible for homicides). He conducted one of the interrogation of Amanda Rodrigues and would have decided on the arrest. he remains silent since Amanda Rodrigues' lawyer has initiated proceedures to sue.
Paulo Alberes - Civilian police (district Ipojuca). Chief of Police Ipojuca, it was he who conducted the bulk of the investigation. He too was convinced of the guilt of the widow when he took the case. "But making progress, the survey showed us that we were misled," he says.
Roberto Brayne - solicitor for the State of Pernambuco. State Attorney in charge of the case from the beginning (the equivalent of our Crown prosecutors). He has asked a judge last week ordered the addition of certain documents to the police report, including toxicology tests done on the body of Gatti.
Luciana Maria de Oliveira Borges - Institute of Forensic Medicine. The coroner who performed the original autopsy. In her report she concluded that death by asphyxiation due to hanging.
Vanja de Oliveira Coelho - Criminalistisque Institute (Instituto de Criminalistica). With her team, she has analyzed the crime scene. This team has discovered traces of the belt on the stairs and that convinced police it was suicide.

    HYPOTHESIS OF SUICICE
Findings of the Brazilian police: after drinking wine and beer, Arturo Gatti would have hung the belt nylon handbag at the junction of two pieces of wood in the middle of the stairs of the apartment, at a height of 2.23 m (7.31ft). It would then be mounted on a bench to pass his head through the strap. The bench was found overturned nearby. After three hours, the nylon strap is broken and the body would have fallen to the ground.
Marks were detected on the wood where the belt had been installed. Investigators also found microscopic nylon fibers at this location.

Guys, I have about 5 editions of the Journal from July 13, I'll try and find a way that you can view them....that is, if you want to (but they're in French)!

Carl ,i agree for the most part wih you,i would just like some of the loose ends tied up,,,these being, the canadians autopsy people agreeing with brazilian......a better explanation of the death scene at the apartment.... they never fully explaied how the strap was tied to the stair post ,did it come loose or break....did he tie it in a knot. etc......you have to show exactly how the strap was used to hang himself....the graphic picture portraying the hanging was pitiful to say the least......you must explain how a skinny stool doesnt tip over and ends up far away from the stairs after he kicks it from standing on it.......so lets just wait then........and by the way are you brazilian?......and if you dont believe in conspiracies i hope then you know kennedy was killed by 1 gunman.....there where no other gunman who killed him.

mike...mike...LOL....I'm having a real hard time trying to figure out why you can't see any reason why he WOULDN'T commit suicide...when all I've done is uncover stories, statement, interviews...that clearly show why he WOULD.
Having followed this case from Day 1 (and those first 2-3 weeks, I also thought she'd done it or got someone to do it), it sounds to me now like everything has been explained.
He wasn't stabbed in the back of the head, the injury was from one of the crowd who threw a rock at him and hit him in the head after he threw/pushed his wife by the throat at the bar. They cops saw the wound on the body and immediately assumed he had been stabbed because there was a steak knife on the floor nearby.
"How can he hang for 3 hours without being seen?": they explained that too - that he did it after she and the kid went to bed. The strap broke after three hours and when she came down at 6am and saw him lying sprawled on the floor she just figured he was piss-ass drunk and passed out.
Like the article states - they had a drunk fight at the bar and in a regrettable fit of drunken depression when he realised what he'd done and how bad things had gotten in thw town, Gatti just said "@#$% it."
It ain't like he's the first one to do such a dumb thing.

It really does seem to me like people are dying to see a coverup and conspiracy in this - but from all official accounts, it just isn't there.
A posh resort in Brazil isn't exactly Burma, as you know 1st-hand- and these cops would be highly motivated to get to the actual bottom of it, especially after they were follish enough to jump to some conclusions in the first 48 hours. It would be incredibly bad for the Porto de Galinhas tourist trade for the place to be seen as a home for bottom-feeders, so I personally find it extremely unlikely that anything hinky is going on in the investigation. Just an initial incorrect assumption coupled with some stupid comments to the media.

But does it make sense that if you were going to stage a suicide that you'd use a damn purse-strap as the hanging vehicle? That alone makes the idea of a staged event almost silly to me. If you were trying to make it look like he'd committed suicide, you wouldn't use a purse-strap!!. And you would NOT make anything look suspicious, as her not discovering his body until many hours later does.
Why so soon after changing the will? I would chalk that up to coincidence (despite all the conspiracy theories about everything under the sun, coincidences actually do occur from time to time). Why no note? The guy was juiced - when you have a skin full of booze and are depressed beyond all hell for screwing up your marriage and for beating your wife in front of a crowd, a crowd which incidentally made it clear they hate you and physically assaulted you for your actions, you tend not to do things very rationally.

How do you mistake a hanging suicide for passed out? I think it's pretty obvious the way they described the scene - he hanged himself after she went to bed, and the purse strap broke after a few hours, spilling him onto the floor. When she came down a few hours later he was lying on his face on the floor. I can't speak for anyone else, but I grew up with an alcoholic father and finding his drunk ass laying on the floor on a Sunday morning was par for the course most of the time. And yes, I actually left him there most of the time too, until he woke up enough to drag his ass up himself.

Why did Arturo try to use a purse strap to hang himself? Because he was on vacation at a resort in Brazil. Other than that, the electric cord on the coffee maker was probably the most lethal hanging device in the suite. I would venture to guess that there weren't any lengths of nylon rope made readily available to resort guests just in case they felt particularly self-loathing at any given time. If he'd used a hanger would it have been less suspicious? How about his shoelaces? My guess is he saw it, said "that'll work" and did it before even thinking about it too hard.
As it is, it didn't work and he used a ruck-sack strap.

Why the '180' on the theory of his death? I think it's clear that the cops rushed to judgement based on some faulty assumptions and once the forensic team saw what was what it showed their assumptions to be wrong. There wasn't anything (the purse strap, the wound to the head, why it took hours to figure out he was dead) that wasn't found to have a logical explanation.

"Wife promises payoffs once estate is probated"? Come on Mike - who would buy that? Really?
6 months from now she is in Belo Horizonte, with her couple million, and excuses herself to go back to Recife with a manilla envelope full of $100s to hand over to the local police chief? A police chief who incidentally agreed to let her go because he trusts her to make her way back with his taste once the money rolls in?
The same department that she's also suing?

    I detest conspiracy theories.
When it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, while it isn't impossible that it is actually a donkey, odds are pretty overpowering that it's a duck.
I believe that's the case here.

No matter what, LOL, Mickey Rourke and all the other guys with this weird 'man-crush' on Gatti says, nobody was inside Gatti's head. But look at the circumstances... here's a guy who is in a new marraige, one that is unhappy and maybe on it's last legs, hence the attempted reconcilliation and trips to Holland, France and Brazil - with the 2nd proposal in Paris.
He has recently made a huge change, forgoing the adulation that powered his get-up-and-go for the last 20 years. He now drunkenly assaults his wife, in public no less with his 11-month old baby there as well and a crowd of people rip him and throw @#$% at him and make him feel like a @#$%.
Now, with the ended career, busted marriage, feeling miserable and hated, probably like everything that means anything to him is now gone.... to think it's farfetched that he might have been suicidal is to ignore a lot of realities, I think. And being drunk makes it worse - when you're drunk self loathing is exxagerated by a factor of ten, and so is self-destructive behavior.

In my opinion, it's all sad, and unfortunate and stupid, but it makes sense that it went down the way they are saying.

interesting carl.....the only problem with some things in this story is that some of it has to be amanda side of it when there alone.....like for example inside the apartment, when he says i did this too you.and she says yes.....thats all hearsay....without witness thats not credible.......plus she didnt have injuries...so i dont believe that part.....but who knows...maybe he was so upset he killed himself.....she did lie at one point she told police she never said it was over...and the new story is her saying yes its finished, over............she told police arturo might have presumed it was over........one thing is that after this he could have been in the state of mind for suicide, but its unusual for a 37 year old to take his life, without any instancd in the past with suicide......

'THE LAST NIGHT OF ARTURO GATTI'
The last night of Arturo Gatti started well, but early in the night, following an argument, everything collapsed. To reconstruct the events, the Journal spoke with a dozen witnesses who met or saw the couple in the small village of Porto de Galinhas in the evening of July 10. The Journal has also consulted the witness statements contained in the report of the civilian police.
Here is the story of the eventful night that preceded the death of the boxer.
After settling into their condo and have just visited the village, Arturo Gatti and Amanda Rodrigues went on the street where there are restaurants and shops of Porto de Galinhas, which leads to the beach. At the end of the street, they stopped about 21 pm in a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the beach. They ate pizza.
Witnesses said the couple had ordered two large pizzas, one for themselves and another for a small group of street children they had invited to the table beside them.
They have ordered two bottles of wine.

Between midnight and one o'clock in the morning, Arturo, Amanda and their baby (who sleeps in a stroller) leave the restaurant and walk to the mall to where the taxi had left.
Along the way, seeing that restaurants were preparing to close their doors, Arturo asks his wife to stop at another small restaurant for a beer. The server installs on a table on the street outside the restaurant, since it closes. They each drink a beer. This is where things started to deterioate between the couple.
At one point, Arturo, upset, allegedly threw a beer on the floor.
Amanda then allegedly said: "You never change ..."
Arturo informed Amanda that he wants to go to the disco in the village, Santeria, which is slightly behind the center.
But Amanda refused and an argument breaks out in the street.
Several witnesses were heard, without understanding them - as they shouted in English.
"I told him that we should return to the hotel because it was late and we had the baby," says Amanda Rodrigues. It would also refused to let him go alone at the bar. Witnesses whom the Journal was talking recall having heard the couple screaming.
"They fought very hard and they spoke English.
It happens often, but when I saw their photos in newspapers, I have recognized, "says Luiza, an employee of a jewelry business street Esperança.

Several witnesses tell of seeing Gatti pushing his wife "like to move it" and shouting phrases "in English or Italian. Since the beginning, Amanda has maintained that her husband had only "surge" and she fell to the ground. But at least one direct witness of the fight in the Journal argued that she had been violently pushed and beaten by Gatti. "I saw the fight, push and she fell and he pulled her by the hair," says George Soares da Silva, answering to the hostel Poussada Farol do Porto. After Amanda had fled on foot to escape Arturo, the 52 year old man, stocky but sturdy enough, then went to Gatti for him to account. The former boxer came to install the baby in a taxi, and was preparing to go away, visibly upset. "I simply asked what had happened and he hit me in the face once or twice. I lost consciousness. When I came back to me, I got up and went back to the hostel. I was bleeding and my nose was broken, "he told the Journal.

Asked several times about this in the Journal, Amanda Rodrigues finally admitted, in tears, she downplayed the violence she was subjected to "people do not keep a bad picture of Arturo. "I've told anyone that he had beaten. It was so sweet and nice most of the time. Only when he drank he became violent towards me, "she said. According to police, who say they have interviewed and obtained statements of sixty witnesses (including several tourists), the fight between Arturo and the porter has attracted several curious, who, threatening, wanted the boxer's face. The taxi driver, startled, then started his car to alert police in a police station a little further down the same path. According Alberes Paulo, the police chief civil Ipojuca, who led the investigation, then, seeing that Gatti was alone and without her baby and the hostile crowd it would take to him, pushing him and throwing stones found ground. The Journal has found that here the floor is under renovation and we can easily find enough boulders. The average taxi, Gatti took refuge there and then returned to the apartment, where he tried in vain Amanda.

The hotel staff who saw him described him as "angry", "sorry". "He smelled of alcohol, but he was not drunk at the point of staggering," said Luciano, an employee of the reception of the hotel complex, which saw Gatti arrived at the hotel with her baby in her arms. Arturo decides to return to Porto de Galinhas, but he must take another taxi because the driver who took him to the apartment complex refuses to resume. Arrived in Porto de Galinhas, Gatti left the baby in the taxi and enter into gale in the bar Santeria. There, in the police report, witnesses describe him as "the Incredible Hulk," hustling customers, pushing the chairs to clear a path and seeking his wife. Again, it would be fought with Brazilians.Finding Amanda is not there, it goes back into the taxi - when the baby cries, according to the testimony of the driver - and returned to the hotel.

When they arrive at the hotel, Amanda is here and waiting near the car taxi which took her back. She asks Aryuto to pay the driver. It was not the magnetic key to enter inside.(The couple had two magnetic cards. Arturo was one and the other was placed permanently in a device to operate the electricity in the apartment). Gatti, who carries the baby still cries, pays the taxi and the couple returned together visibly angry at the hotel. It is then between 2 am and 2 pm 30 am.Once inside, according to Amanda Rodrigues, Arturo realizes she is hurt and asks him: "It was I who did it?" When she replied in the affirmative, he asked him if everything was now finished them. She said "yes" before taking the baby and get into the master bedroom upstairs.

"I locked the door. This is the last time I talked to him"

Hello Mikebdb22 - I don't know how much you've been following this but it now appears that 'associates' of The Gatti's are now accessing Amanda Rodrigues' email account and checking up on her.
Plus, the house which she and Arturo lived at in Montreal has now had the access-code changed...

Fabrizio Gatti claims he knows nothing of this...but he has said that they have quite a few people in Brazil working on their claims that Arturo was murdered.
(Pat Lynch went as far as to say they believed Gatti was 'severly beaten and then killed')

WTF haven't The Gatti's tried to contact her???

I don't like how this is now going off at a tangent about the Will...rather than finding out what happened to Arturo.

im not sure how everyone knows what evidence there is , or how they know she is guilty. the news reports make her look suspicious and she was in jail for 18 days for a reason. just because they didnt prosucute doesnt mean she is innocent or guilty, just they dont think they can get a conviction. her behavior is that of a fool. she should shut up and disapear from the limelight. i think it's going to come back to haunt her. but who knows. clearly she is young and a fool by her statements, but bieng a moneygrubbing idiot isnt illegal, look at george bush.

Can't wait to see the outcome of this. Will be a couple months from what I've heard/read.

They have the best people on this and Pat Lynch, his attorney brother will get to the bottom of this no matter what it takes!

She's involved no doubt in some way. It could be her alone or she had some help. Crazy @#$% will get her day, you can count on it.

ALSO, will be interesting to see what was found on her computer that Gatti's family turned in.

    What a lawless country.

Doesnt make her a murderer, but her true personality is coming out...just read her letter she wrote after she was released....you dont throw the family of your husband under the bus, excusing them of abuse and not loving there son.....and to say there zero evidence of murder is off base, just ask the brazilians authorities that.....or they would have no doubt right away of her innocence.......i still have the newpaper from there.........she had several different stories.................looked at her husband laying there like a sack of potatoes with blood around his head and says she thought he was sleeping....lol.......wounds that the brazilian autopsy missed....a knife wound to the back of his head.....not found hanging........its amazing how a guy uses the strap but there none of his finger prints on it!!!........so lets wait and see....

Mike - someone who is guilty would not draw further attention to themselves...and as for lying, immature goldiggers... does that automatically make them murderers?
And like I said: there's zero evidence of murder in this case.

harley rider - no idea what your post means or points to at all.

Fact is that both men and women dig a woman taking control. Even to the point of death, as this episode shows. Most obviously a tragedy as things may have gotten out of control, but woman strangling man is an accepted sex act that very powerful men often choose. Sorry we lost a sports hero, but many men who are powerful, whether in the corporate world or the world of sports are the ones who know that better than anyone. A campy but psychologically right on blog that discusses this from the standpoint of an alleged hitwoman writing a blog, is at http://assassinette.blogpost.com assassinette.blogpost.com

Probably a dark humor blog, but ya never know.

Suicide looks like the only theory that doesn't have any holes in it.
I'm sure he first tried to use the purse-strap to hang himself (hence the knife on the floor used to cut it)...but this failed, so he used the ruck-sack strap instead.

There's ZERO evidence that points to her murdering him and/or getting in help to murder him.
    There's a motive, sure...but actual evidence?
    None whatsoever.
