Update on MMA steroid tests

Another mixed martial artist has tested positive for an anabolic steroid.

Anthony Torres, who was stopped in the first round of his fight with Jess Liaudin at UFC 75 in London on Sept. 8, tested positive for Boldenone, UFC vice president Marc Ratner said.
Because there is no entity which regulates MMA in the United Kingdom, the UFC administered drug tests at random before and after the fights that night.

Torres was found to have Boldenone in his system. He will not be able to be punished by a commission since none has jurisdiction, but Ratner said the UFC plans to advise athletic commissions of the positive test.

The UFC released Torres from his contract for poor performance after the loss to Liaudin, Ratner said.

"We strongly hate steroids and we're going to do what we have to do to get them out of this sport," Ratner said.

The other fighters who were tested all passed. Those who were tested are UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson, Dan Henderson, Dennis Siever, Michael Bisping, Terry Etim, Houston Alexander and Gleison Tibau.

All of the fighters who competed at UFC 76 on Sept. 22 in Anaheim, Calif., passed their steroids test and all but Kazuhiro Nakamura passed the test for drugs of abuse.

Nakamura was found to have marijuana in his system. He was fined $500 and suspended through Dec. 21.

At the Strikeforce show on Sept. 29 at the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, Calif., Adam Smith tested positive for cocaine and marijuana. He was fined $1,500 and suspended through June 25.

All 23 other tests for drugs of abuse on that show were negative, though results of steroids tests are still pending.

Cocaine and marijuana at the playboy mansion?! I am shocked and appalled! Ok thats no surprise. Personally I don't see any problem with steroids in the UFC. 1 year ban, stripped of a title...and look at all other professional sports, a 1 year ban is equivalent to a season in other professional sports. UFC cards have any where from 5-7 fights, thats up the 14 fighters chances are your always going to find someone with something illegal in their systems. I think Dana white and the UFC dont cut corners and when you get punished for steroids you get punished hard. 1 year ban, you come back lose a fight or 2 and you could easily be forgotten.

fine you wanna hear something provoking....the ufc is a joke. the way its set up is set up for a quick KO. It needs to be set up similar to pride with a longer first round where there is a possibility for a quality submission (rear naked choke is not a quality submission). and there is a fighter out there who dominates like no other but is hardly known. when everyone starts talking about him, you can say you heard it first here, even though you should have heard about him long ago (but the majority of mma fans are a joke and are extreme bandwagoners and know absolutely nothing about the sport) Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou. he's the real deal.

    Carl,
Why are you singling Houston out? He is a monster, but read about what he does to get ready. The works is in the gym 4 hours a day. That is sick. His recovery time is good. That means he eats the right things.

Many of the top guys juice. They have to if they want to stay ahead of the game and compete will the other guys that are juicing. Otherwise they would lose an edge. They have lots of time between fights to get clean and take masking drugs...whatever. HGH isnt even detectable by regular drug testing. It increases strength and recovery. Exactly what these guys need to fight day in and day out and train hard everyday. It is their job to do this.

jtakeo11 ok so you say that a rear naked choke is not a quality choke. Somehow you have to dominate your opponent (which UFC trains 3 times a day to not get into those chokes) to get onto his back and slip your already sweaty arm under his chin then stretch his body out with your hips. I would really love to hear what you describe as quality chokes. Tell you what go to a UFC runned Gym and ask to be put into a rear naked choke. When your face turns red and your losing air to the deflated brain of yours then ask how quality that choke is. In case you haven't noticed a choke revolves around losing air to your brain or windpipes. In other MMA you can use the Gi to apply a choke but, there are no Gi's anymore in UFC. So you wrestle somebody 3 times a day and see if you will think if that choke is quality or not.

I don't agree with you lowe. They may be taking something that can provide a faster recovery but, MMA isn't about the strongest guy around. Its about the technique, your mindset and a little bit of luck. Some guys get caught with a lucky kick or slip up to something else. When they drug test the guys its not like they try to find all forms because thats what the docs are paid for. So usually urine and blood test are used. Am I saying that some don't juice? Oh no theres juicing everywhere in every sport. I wouldn't be surprised if there was juicing in dance competitions haha. I don't think that all the top guys juice though. They need to stop making it Random Drug Testing and just make it a drug test before everyfight. Then when the public hears the report will I agree with you. No offense

no doubt It is all about technique. A smaller guy can beat a bigger/stronger opponent etc. Im not saying that all the top guys juice. I m saying a good chunk and probably a lot more than people think. Some guys may have excellent genetics as well. But it isnt hard to tell when a guy comes back from a loss 6 months later with about 15 lbs more muscle looking jacked.

The shorter rounds are much better in UFC. Who wants to see too completely exhausted fighters stumble around with no action. Second, if there isn't a KO, their system works better when the judges are needed. The steroid issue can be resolved by testing every fighter twice a month.

All I want to see is 2 dudes beatin the hell out of each other...period!! Of course steroids are involved or HGH whateva..it's not going away, so all we can hope for is the UFC's testing policy is a good one. That being said, this is cagefighting, you can try and "clean" it up by calling it mixed martial arts...but it is what it is...a fight! And in a fight there should be nowhere to run...like in Pride when you're getting your head beat in just slide under the ropes and the referee would stop the action and restart because guys were getting tangled in the ropes. So, a cage is the only realistic place for this kind of fighting..lock the door and let them fight. And there also should be NO rounds period!!..It's a fight for christs sake, or make it one twenty minute round, and penalize fighters money for lack of action, trust me, 1% of fights would go to the judges. And any true fan of cagefighting would say the last thing they want to see is 3 morons cageside trying to judge a glorified street fight. It makes no sense and it leaves the possibilty of corruption. Fight til one man taps or the ref/doc has to stop the fight.....GIMME BLOOD...BROKEN BONES AND CHOKEOUTS....PLEASE!!!!

Weed isn't a performance inhancer. If Nick Diaz was on pot during his Gomi fight in Japan, He's the baddest Mofo on the planet and coulda killed 5 men in the ring that night straight. They need to get a solid gameplan on the drugtesting crap.
I agree with the 10min first round like in Pride. I also think alot of the Pride fighters are having a problem with the testing rules that didn't exist in Japan. Coming off of the Juice messes with yer aggression. Getting pressed up against a cage is also a huge adjustment for some of the guys.
    Triangle Choke!!!
