It's not the first time a Taylor was denied a victory in the final seconds of a big fight with less than 20 seconds left but this time it was the right decision. Meldrick Taylor lost a controversial fight to Juilo Cesar Chavez with two seconds left back in 1990 when Richard Steele decided to stop it. Taylor was ahead of Chavez, big on of two of the three scorecards.

A similar scenario unfolded on Saturday night when Jermain Taylor took a four point lead over Carl Froch into the 12th round on two of the three scorecards. But the score didn't tell the story as Taylor was fading badly to end the 11th. He got whacked with 1:58 left in the fight, stumbled around the ring for the next minute and then finally went down with 44 seconds left in the fight. Taylor tried to hold on, drifted to the ropes and then dropped his hands. Referee Michael Ortega stepped into to stop it with 14 seconds left.

Watch the Froch knockout (0:44 mark):

"My main concern is the safety of fighters at all times, regardless of time," Ortega told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. "I don't concentrate on time. Fourteen seconds, 10 seconds, it doesn't matter. The main thing is for the fighters to go home safe and sound to their loved ones. I knew it was close to the end of the round, but [Taylor] wasn't throwing anything back. I said 'Enough is enough' and hopefully he can come back another day."

Taylor led the fight 106-102 on the scorecards of Nobuaki Uratani and Omar Minton. Even with a 10-8 in the 12th round, Froch would've come up short of closing the gap. With that, Taylor still wouldn't say he was screwed:

"I don't know if he made the right decision or not, but he is the referee and he thought he should stop it and he stopped it," Taylor said. "I take my hat off to the referee.

Taylor (28-3-1, 17 KOs) said he definitely wants a rematch against Froch (25-0, 20 KOs). With all the difficulty the elite fighters have making fights against top notch competition in this weight range, why wouldn't these guy fight again? It's an easy sell.

Taylor is no body, he was even lucky to have robbed BHPK..... Dibela is a dirty promoter out there, but this time he failed to bribe the Briton, and his boxer got his ass kicked like hell. i AGREE, HE HAS NO GAS.......

July - you're right. i replied to that post. Although i never post anti-Cofield comments, i have recognized where he has done this in the past. Coincidence - I don't believe in coincidence.
Shamrock - Lou DiBella, to my knowledge hasn't tried to bribe people. The B-Hop fight was close but i did think Taylor did enough to win that fight, but it could've gone either way. Have you any evidence of this accusation? I'd like to know because I and a close friend of mine have been contacted by DiBella's business people as potential clients.

    July no doubt.. agreed...
what kills me is there was another great fight with jml and penalosa. gets no ink?? it was more action laden and full of talent (jml threw every punch possible with tenacity and skill) than any mma fight. yet it is not deserving of a blog..?? especially for all the pr and flip fans out there??? but guys like koppenhaver (a non relevant mma fighter) gets endless wasted cyber ink on the mma side.. and what are you talking about difficulty in good matches made at smw.?? there are a lot of recent good fights in that division. cofield you dont know what the hell you are talking about.. i guess you prefer anderson silva dancing around the ring like an idiot, and his opponent imitating a turtle...
taylor was gassed and in serious trouble . i dont have a prob with the stoppage. as i have said before, i would think with all his experience he should of known to clinch and hang on.. froch wont make any noise in that division. he would get a hair cut if he fought bhop, ward, even allan green or miranda... not sold on the guy at all.. more disappointed in how bad taylor is after round 6..

Mangler. i got pacman as well. i am interested to see how he handles hatton and his rough style of 'inside' fighting.. and if the ref will be proactive in trying to prevent it or let hatton do his thing on the inside. i think if they let hatton maul him, it could take pacman out of his energizer bunny rhythm... look forward to this fight. you are right about jml penalosa. penalosa could have continued and i think he would of had roach not called it. the guy is all heart. it was a great action fight with some wicked stuff thrown by jml.

I bet for Taylor to win unanimously. Not b'coz he beat a HF like B. Hop twice? But b'coz his a better boxer than Foch. SHOOOOOOOOOOOT! He never learned? He squared off against Pavlik he got swat, now against Foch? Old habits returned. Now I'll tell you this JERMAIN TAYLOR is an "OVERATED AMATURE BOXER". @#$%*^. History does repeats itself. As an amature you got only 5 rounds. May 2, will see what Ricky Hatton will bring into the table. If he goes back to his old habits, Pacquiao will put red and blue "maskara" to his face. Especially does rugged edges, that will sliced open.

I'm not worried about rough fighting. If you want rough fighting or boxers go to the Philippines. You'll be surprised how a lanky Pacquiao survived. Not that his a superman, in his later career he's more cautions now. Its like 10, 5 year olds punching your belly. At first, you can handle it, 2nd it becomes red, 3rd you feel some pain and lastly you said "STOP, ENOUGH".

I feel sorry for the old warrior, Gerry P. He could have continued and we don't know maybe he could do damage. If this was 10 years ago. JML won't last long. Before JMMarquez, Gerry was the Marquez of the Philippines. He even fought undercard Tyson in Las Vegas. For now JML is a very good boxer, but I still have some reservations his "OVERATED". The best fighters in his class are 30 above years old. I believed the other Marquez will give him problems. For Gerry P. I salute you, despite the unslaught he remained firm. The consolation for a retired boxer is........."NEVER BEEN FLOORED".

These guys aren't smart enough nor deserving enough to win a fight like what we saw in the Froch/Taylor fight.... Don't get caught. Don't put it in the hands of judges or a referee. Taylor had to know he was ahead on points against a "nobody", yet a guy that still packs a decent punch... don't get caught. They have nothing to whine about, and nothing to bag on the referee about..... take matters into your own hands, and finish the deal; don't get put in such a position. Kinda like Chavez, Meldrick Taylor. Kind of like Big John Tate vs Mike Weaver back in the day, and there have been several others. Taylor got caught , lights out.....next. Taylor has some work to do, if he thinks he's going to rise back to the top of the heap one day....

Tlarry - Taylor was actually going on misinterpreted iformation from his cornermen telling him he had to go out and WIN this fight. Not only that, he was only a head by a point on one judges card going in to the final round and down a point on another judges card. There was no room to play it safe. He had to go in and fight the guy and unfortunately he got caught. If he would have been able to throw two or three more punche after the knocdown he may have made it through the fight but still may have lost the decision. So that 'Don't leave it in the judge' s hands' comment might be out of place for this fight. He did what he had to do. Now if he had gotten on his horse for the last two rounds you'd probably be calling him a puss for winning that way. You might want to watch the fight again and see what i'm saying!
